"These vibrations were transferred
magnetically to another wire connected to a diaphragm in another
distant instrument."
Sorry folks, this is unfortunately a bit misleading. First, Bell used an
electrolytic microphone containing acid, far too hazardous for commercial
application, more on that later. Sound vibrations were and are transmitted
electrically where on the receiving end they are transduced, converted back
to sound vibrations magnetically. The famous phrase "Watson, come here, I
want you." was spoken because Bell spilled acid on himself and needed help.
The fledgeling Bell Telephone Company was bought by what was later to become
American Telephone & Telegraph and this is where Thomas Edison came in. The
hazardous electrolytic microphone needed a replacement if commercial success
was to be achieved, so Edison was hired and set about the task. His
invention, the carbon microphone remained in use until the 1980s when it was
replaced by the electret, a low voltage version of the condenser (capacitor)
microphone in common use now. Due to its small size and high efficiency it
appears in a multitude of devices from cell (mobile) phones to computers,
many of you have one sitting right in front of you like I have. That's where
VoIP comes in, voice over Internet protocol, I'm sure you've heard of Skype
and its various relations.
One question, how many of you and especially your YLs and harmonics just
can't go 5 minutes without being plugged into the network yapping away on
your smart phones or texting making your thumbs so strong your hands have
turned into lobster claws?

Bell didn't invent the telephone, I did.
