The news headlines:
* Full licensees to get bigger 2m band via NoV soon

We start with a Stop Press item. On Friday morning Ofcom published a
Statement that included an intention to release 1MHz of additional
spectrum to radio amateurs on the 2m band on a temporary basis. The
frequencies, from 146 to 147MHz, will be available via a Notice of
Variation to Full licence holders only. Applications for NoVs can be
made via the RSGB website from the end of October, and more
information will be published on the website as soon as it becomes
available.
With JOTA 2014 a little more than a week away comes the news that its
founding father, Les Mitchell, G3BHK, died on 6th October. Les
started JOTA in 1958, after launching the idea a year earlier at the
World Scout Jamboree. That was the first year the Jamboree had an
amateur radio station on site, and is has had one every year since.
Scouting's 2014 Jamboree on the Air is set for the 18th and 19th
October. The annual event links Scouts and Guides around the world
via amateur radio; if you hear them on the air, please give them a
shout.
All radio amateurs are reminded that the closing date for responses
to the Ofcom consultation paper Updating the Amateur Radio Licence is
20 October 2014. It is vital that anyone with an opinion on the
proposals takes the time to put their views in writing, either by
filling in the online response form or by letter. The RSGB has put
together a brief commentary to help illustrate some of the more
significant changes proposed and this should be read in conjunction
with the consultation document. Early this week the RSGB will publish
its response to Ofcom on the website should radio amateurs require

The RSGB would like to extend their congratulations to Gaston
Bertels, ON4WF, who has been awarded the IARU Region 1 Roy Stevens,
G2BVN Memorial Trophy for his meritorious service to amateur radio
over many years. Gaston was the chairman of the Eurocom Working Group
and then the chairman of the Amateur Radio Space Exploration Working
Group. Gaston, aged 87, has decided to step down as chairman.
On 18th October 1924, two-way communication was established between
Frank Bell, 4AA in New Zealand and Cecil Goyder, 2SZ, operating from
Mill Hill School in North London. To commemorate the 90th anniversary
of this historic contact, radio amateurs at stations in Mill Hill
School and New Zealand will recreate the first Goyder/Bell contact,
hopefully on a wavelength close to that used in 1924. The callsign
2SZ will be aired from 11th to 18th October from Mill Hill School.
Pupils will be able to visit the radio station, speak to the
operators, and even speak over the air. Whilst the station won't be
open to the public, on 18th October there will be a live webcam at
the School covering the communications and celebrations. In New
Zealand, a special station, using the callsign ZL4AA, will be
operating from Shag Valley in South Island during the same week.
The Chelmsford Ideas Festival runs from 20th October until 2nd
November and celebrates the creativity of Chelmsford's people, past
and present. Amongst the highlights is a talk by Professor Marconi,
the grandson of Guglielmo Marconi. This will be complemented by an
account of the extraordinary space technology that the company e2v
produces today. Amateur radio features on two days. Members of the
Chelmsford ARS will be giving presentations in the Ideas Hub on The
World of Amateur Radio from 10am-4pm on Friday 31st October and
Sunday 2nd November.
There is still time to get involved with the new RSGB Youth
Committee, which will provide a focus for the Society's younger
members and help promote amateur radio to younger sections of the
community. Applicants must be under 26 years of age and be Full,
Junior or Student Members of the RSGB. For more information and

Following extensive work by a number of Training & Education
Committee members, the Train the Trainers course has been redesigned
and a date and venue has been set for a pilot course. The course is
intended to increase the confidence of new tutors and those without
any formal teaching qualifications, helping them deliver fun but
effective amateur licence training. It has been designed by David,
G0EVA, Derek, G7LFC and Paul, G4DCV who between them have over 50
years professional teaching experience, and they want to share many
of the tricks, tips and secrets that they use daily. Following
feedback from the pilot, the new course will be rolled out across the
UK, with the aim of running three or four courses a year. There will
be no charge for the course. The one-day event will take place on
Saturday 31st of January in Tamworth. Anyone interested in attending

The Mayo Radio Rally takes place today, 12th October, at Welcome Inn

The 2014 Annual General Meeting of the UK Six Metre Group takes place
today, 12th October, at 12.30pm at the Kent's Hill Conference Centre,
Milton Keynes, MK7 6BZ during the RSGB Convention.
The final day of the two-day programme at the RSGB Convention takes
place today, the 12th, at Kent's Hill Conference Centre, Milton
Keynes. Principal sponsor is Martin Lynch & Sons.
Hack Green Bunker Rally takes place today, 12th October, at Hack
Green Secret Nuclear Bunker, Nantwich, Cheshire CW5 8AL. Doors open

The Hornsea Amateur Radio Club Rally is at the Floral Hall, 7 The

The Carrickfergus Amateur Radio Group rally takes place on Saturday
18th October at Downshire Community School, Carrickfergus, BT38 7DA.

The Chippenham & District ARC mini indoor rally will be held on
Sunday 19th October at Neston Village Hall, Pool Green, Neston,

Also on the 19th the Galashiels & District ARS rally will be held in

The Fog on the Tyne Rally appears in October RadCom with the wrong
date. The rally is being held on 25th October, opening at 10.30am at

Now for the news of special events
Today, 12th October, from 10.30am to 4pm, Cray Valley RS will be at
Crossness Museum, Belvedere Road, Abbey Wood, London SE2 9AQ with the
GB2CM exhibition stand. It will feature how to get started in amateur
radio and the support offered by Cray Valley in providing licence
training courses and guidance for newcomers. As the open day theme is
local history the stand will also feature some local history
connections with radio by including a small display of memorabilia
from KW Electronics, K-B and Burndept/Vidor, companies all located
only a few miles from the museum site.
2nd Herrington Scouts are on the with GB2SHG air for Jamboree on the
air on the 18th and 19th October. They will be on all HF bands as
well as 2m and 70cm and PSK31 from their Scout headquarters at Crow
Lane, Herrington, Sunderland, SR33TE. Details are on QRZ.com or

This year is the 33rd time that the Special Event Station
commemorating the liberation of Knokke by Canadian troops in 1944
will be in operation. This year the club are using the special prefix
OO for the station, so OO4CLM will be on the air from 16 October to
15 November. More information on the station and how to obtain an

On 18th & 19th October, GB1GLO will be in operation over the JOTA
weekend for Gloucester District Scouts, run by members of
Gloucestershire RAYNET from the Murray Hall, Tuffley Lane,
Gloucester.
Scouts in the Forest of Dean will be using GB1ALS and GB0FOD,
operating from Lydney on 18th & 19th October.
And now the DX news compiled from 425 DX News and other sources
Members of the Radio Club Argentino will activate AY4E from Martin
Garcia Island, SA-055, in Uruguayan waters between 16th and 19th
October. Operations will be on 160 meters through to 70cm using CW,
SSB and the some digital modes. QSL to LU4QQ direct or LU4AA via the
bureau.
A major German DXpedition will be active as T30D from Western
Kiribati, OC-017, until 15 October. Four stations are planned to be
operational around the clock on all bands from 160 to 6m on CW, SSB
and RTTY. QSL Manager is DL4SVA.
Markus, DJ4EL will be QRV as 5Z4/DJ4EL from Lamu Island, AF-040, off
the coast of Kenya until 19 October. Operation will be on all bands
from 10 to 40m SSB.
From the 13th to 17th Diego will operate from Rodrigues Island,
AF-017, as 3B9/F4HAU. QSL via F4HAU either direct or via the bureau.
JG8NQJ plans to operate portable JD1 from Marcus Island, NA-052, from
mid-October until mid-December. Activity will be limited to his spare
time, concentrating on 17 metres, but he does plan to also use 15, 10
and 12 metres as well. All of his airtime will be CW only. QSL via
JA8CJY direct or via the bureau.
Now the contest news
The Oceania DX CW contest ends at 0800 on the 12th after 24 hours.
Using the 1.8 to 28MHz bands the exchange is signal report and serial
number.
The 432MHz UK Activity Contest takes place on Tuesday from 1900 to
2130UTC. The exchange is the usual signal report, serial number and
locator.
Sunday the 19th sees the 50MHz AFS contest taking place from 0900 to
1200UTC. Using all modes the exchange is signal report, serial number
and locator.
Now the solar factual data for the period from Friday the 3rd to
Thursday the 9th of October, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on Friday
the 10th of October.
Solar activity was low every day with only C class solar flares
taking place until the 9th when early in the morning two M1 class
solar flares took place within 15 minutes of each other. Another M1
class flare occurred several hours later. These flares had verery day, except for the 9th which increased to an Ap index of
14 units. The average was Ap 6 units. Solar wind data from the ACE
spacecraft saw solar wind speeds between 320 and 460 kilometres per
second. Particle densities were low except for a brief increase
during the morning of the 8th to above 80 particles per cubic
centimetre. Bz varied between minus and plus 8 nanoTeslas on the 9th,
which was the most disturbed day, and between minus and plus 4
nanoTeslas on the quietest days.
Now the solar forecast for the coming week. For the first half of tho a recurring
coronal hole. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be
around 34MHz. Darkness hour lows should be about 11MHz. Paths this
week to the Middle East should have a maximum usable frequency with a
50 per cent success rate of around 32MHz. The optimum working
frequency with a 90 per cent success rate of around 26MHz. The best
time to try this path will be between 1000 and 1400 hours UTC.
