A useful history of UK amateur radio call signs is available detailing
the different classes and dates of issue over the past century
Read the UK Call Sign History at

Apparently the GW prefix was originally used in the Irish Free State
and GC used to be the prefix for Scotland. See the Early Prefix
information available via the Internet Archive site at
http://web.archive.org/web/20130511032504/http://highfields-arc.co.uk/call/aboutcalls.htm
The Ofcom database of amateur radio call signs as at September 20, 2016 is at
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/excel_doc/0028/90397/Callsign-database-20-Sep.xlsx
The Reserved classification used in the database is thought to refer
to call signs where the holder has passed away, or the licence has
been voluntarily Cancelled, or is one of the call signs that was
Revoked when Ofcom tested Revocation for the first and so far only
time on a small batch of unvalidated licences in December 2015.
