WX4QZ:
GE to all on the net, from Scrooge McHam
(hi hi). The commercialism of the holiday
season just turns me off. Can't we just say
Happy Hallowthanksmasnewyearvalentinepatricks
day, and knock 6 of them out at once?? (hi hi)
I had to go to the Emergency Room early
Saturday with sharp testicular pain. I
thought for sure it was more kidney stones.
But, it was epididymytis, prostatitis, and
a severe urinary tract infection (it had
worsened). So, I see the female nurse
practitioner in the morning, having to
get up before "the butt crack of dawn".
I still have to get the cystoscopy set
up, to make sure I don't have any new
stones.
I apparently got scammed by a text message
deal, supposedly from Social Security. I
never got the verification text message,
so I found the number for the Little Rock
office, and talked to them. They zapped my
account at my request, but when I went to
set it up fresh, because of "no credit", I
got locked out. So, after the urologist deal
in the morning, I go down to the Federal
Building. I've got the enhanced drivers
license (required by Oct. 1, 2020), so I
won't have trouble getting in (they said it
was a madhouse down there today). After that,
I'll go out to a library in Sherwood, and see
if I can set up exam dates for 2020. With the
Extra Class Question Pool changing in July, I
am curious to see the changes on it.
I also am trying to remove a credit freeze
on the TransUnion deal, but their website
has been down all day. Technology, phooey!!
I didn't get a chance to call Verizon to
update the Wi-Fi plan, but will try to do
that tomorrow after I get back home. The
Wi-Fi crashed just before the net.
Terminix threw out the last of the trash
today, and I still have to vacuum out the
rooms, and get my late Mom's stuff that's
in the garage hauled off. There are
apparently some rodents still trapped
inside. I've been playing the music from
a local country/western station at night
to hide the rodent noises. I didn't get a
nap today, so I should sleep good tonight,
especially considering my early wakeup call.
I'm going to try to start reorganizing
things on Wednesday. More storms Thursday
into Friday and early next week, but no
snow or ice. Still got some rodents in
here, but at least most all the junk is
gone. Now, to get my late Mom's clothes
hauled off. I'll rest better when the
rodents are gone.
The only good Blizzard Warning...when the
Dairy Queen employee says your treat is
ready (hi hi). I need to try that out some
day.
Switched from Straight Talk to T-Mobile
last week. Same number. Will save $16 a
month, and got a new LG Astro 4+ phone
in the process. Now, I have to move stuff
to the SD card. Only have 15 photos right
now, but a bunch of programs. Got the trains
theme back on it, with a railroad crossing
bell for the ringtone, and a steam engine
whistle for the notification, and my
Conductors picture for the wallpaper.
Had my flu shot already...my wallet and
bank account will become ill from lack
of funds. Maybe I'm going blind, as I can
never see the money in my wallet (hi hi).
3 weeks from Wednesday is Christmas. Got
to get that Easter shopping done soon
(hi hi).
It was real windy here. but not as bad as
where Scott is. More storms forecast later
this week...not sure what our winter will
bring, but what a mess for holiday travelers.

VE7TCP:
Hi, sorry I was idle there for a bit. I even
connected early tonight but was sidelined when
my ex started texting me. It was surprising
good news though, for once. I'll get to that
in a second.
Last week on Tuesday was exam night for the
license prep course my kids (and a friend of
mine were taking), run by the local club.
Unfortunately, none of them passed, although
my son did come close and did finish early
enough to get a second exam try. Amazingly, he
scored 64 on both of them. (Not sure what ARRL
requirements are, but for the Canadian Basic
exam you need to 70% to pass and 80% to pass
with honours (which gets you access to HF)).
My daughter only got 48, and declined to try a
second exam, since she knew she wasn't prepared
enough to do significantly better on a second
attempt. My friend, who had been doing very well
(70s and 80s on practice exams) succumbed to test
anxiety and took forever to finish, scoring in the
mid-40's. We all went to Dairy Queen to drown our
sorrows in ice cream afterwards. :)
Told the kids I was proud of them for sticking it
out, and with a break and some more study, we can
always reach out to the club to try again in the
future.
So back to my ex- what she was just texting about
is that she'd like me to buy the kids each an HT,
but wanted some advice on something useful under
$200 she could perhaps order from Amazon. So, that
was unexpectedly nice of her, and I'll need to do
a little research. (Also open to any recommendations
from you folks!).
Looks like the FT-70D is around 2x the budget,
unfortunately (remember, we're talking $200 in
Canuckistan Pesos).
Browsing the Amazon, the Yaesy FT-4XR looks like
it might be a contender. I'll keep looking, though.
I don't really know about the Baofengs etc. although
I know they will be cheaper, I don't know what to
expect.
Haven't got the flu yet, although I did get a
nasal/sinus infection after my root canal, so that's
always fun. I'm sure I could bore you all for hours,
but that's all I can remember.
We might have a winner there - 2 pack of UV-5R
with programming cable. $302.50

VA7RBP:
GE Bob and to all on the net.
Did lots of stuff this past week, mostly
chasing a bunch of guys over 40, 30m, and
20m, doing JS8, PACTOR-1, packet on 30M and
ARDOP on all 3 bands.
I installed the latest verion of firmware
in one of my AEA PK-232MBX units and aligned
the tones. Played around with a 75 foot long
wire trying to get some better performance
on 30m.
Then, last Thursday, I went out for a 5 km
(3 1/8 mile) walk in the cold, and picked
up a nasty chest cold...still fighting it.
Oh, we also had exams last Saturday, 23 people
in the course, 5 passed, 4 with honours.
I have a UVB5 that I use for portable packet
setup, they have limited range, and if you have
a tree or a rock in the way, it's hit or miss.

KF5JRV:
GE everyone.
It has been a week. My packet station corrupted
the config file. I did have a backup.
Now I am doing a chkdsk run to test the drive.
It is an older PC, so I may need to get a more
modern hard drive.
The wind blew my packet antenna over as well.
We had gusts of 35 to 40 mph, and a pretty
steady 25 mph winds. Maybe time for general
maintenance?
We all seem to have recovered from the
congestion and cold that we had for so
long. Just in time for flu season.
I have a couple of the U5RV Baofeng. Lose
the stock antenna and they are not too bad
for a cheap HT. I can hit repeaters 15 miles
away from my hilltop. Pretty rugged and
reliable for the money.
