GE to all on the net. As usual, I have a lot
to talk about. If I didn't, you'd wonder
about me (hi hi).
It stormed here between 11pm and 2am, and
while there were several significant weather
advisories, and a few warnings for flash
flooding and severe thunderstorms, no tornado
warnings that I know of were in Arkansas.
Tornado Watches covered northwest and west
central Arkansas until 11pm, with central
and northeast Arkansas under a watch until
4am, but the watch was canceled around 2am.
I slept during the evening, so I could be up
when the storms arrived, in case I had to
take shelter.
I had to fix a glitch on the BBS after I
brought everything back up...a bot was
slamming the telnet port, and while one
could connect, they couldn't logon. Once I
blocked the offending IP address, all was
well. So, I took additional power naps this
afternoon. My eyes are real tired from a lot
of computer work today. At least I don't have
to get up early the next several mornings...
but I'm up at 8am local time on Friday, to
do the QCWA CQ100 Net...I also do their Digital
Net on Sunday afternoon.
Massive tornado damage occurred in portions
of Missouri and Illinois...one town lost
its fire department building. More rain
and storms are forecast Wednesday through
Thursday, but it appears severe weather
will be to our west on Tuesday...and to our
south on Wednesday. We need the rain, as
portions of central Arkansas are under
moderate fire danger. It's supposed to be
much cooler here for the end of the week,
and even cooler weather for early November
is possible. The La Nina Winter Outlook looks
similar to last year (warmer and drier than
normal)...but last February with all the
bitter cold and snow, blew that out of the
water.
No more night driving until the Yag Laser
Eye Surgery on Nov. 18, unless they move it
up. I don't anticipate any issues, but if
it doesn't go well, then I have to sell the
car, and take Uber out twice a month to the
Post Office Box, or medical appointments...
then get groceries and medications delivered.
Otherwise, I'll be stuck at home...alone. As
long as I can keep the computer and internet
to do my hobbies, I can keep what little
sanity I have left.
Got a new Technician and an upgrade to General
at the exam session on Saturday. I'm glad that
ARRL/VEC has a deal where the liaison can make
a PDF file of all the scanned in items, then
send it to them. They then debit my bank card
for the exam fee, and I can take my time to
sending the other stuff back. This way, the
examinees can get their callsign or upgrade
the Tuesday after the session...unless Monday
is a holiday. I got word that the examinees
results have already been processed, and are
in the FCC ULS, 2 days after the test!! With
hunting season, winter, and the holidays, we
likely won't test again until next spring.
Speaking of holidays, we won't meet on the Mondays
of November 22, December 20, and December 27, for
the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years holidays.
Hard to believe that 2022 is almost here. With the
supply chain shortages, many folks won't be able to
have Christmas gifts this year. Never mind the
classic song by the late Merle Haggard, "If We Make
It Through December"...or the cry "Let's Go Brandon"
(hi hi).
And, speaking of dates, the time change to "Fall
Back" to Standard Time for the US and Canada is a
week from Sunday, November 7, at 2am local time.
The time for this net, and most other nets won't
change, but nets that originate in Arizona, or
nets operating on UTC, will see a change in the
local time for the nets.
Folks can still get the Excel Spreadsheets of selected
D-Star, Echolink, and D-Rats Nets, plus PDF files
related to ham radio, from hyperlinks on my QRZ bio.
My debit card expires next month, but I'm supposed
to get a new one by the middle of the month. With
services I'm dropping, I'm not bothering to notify
them. Besides, I can do nothing until the bank
issues the new card.
I dropped the T-Mobile service entirely, and turned
in the phone, charger, plug, and cable...so I'm just
on Verizon now. All of the Samsung Galaxy phones
from T-Mobile would quit holding a charge, and start
dropping calls after just six months. Why they kept
selling these models is beyond me. Their last 3
customer service reps at the West Little Rock store
acted like they didn't want me there.
To finish round 1 off, and to bring a Monday smile,
I heard of a cute instance where this elderly woman
had to have some dental work done. Just before he
starts, he tells the woman "Ma'am, do you realize
your fingers are around my testicles??". She replied,
"Yes, and we're not going to hurt us, are we, sonny??!!"
I needed that laugh...can you say "No Pressure" -- and
"Don't Mess With Us Old Folks!!" (hi hi).

Bob, I'm sure your Corvette misses you as well. It's
going into its winter hibernation, and will see you
in the spring.
I thought I didn't have all the answer sheets at the
test session, but I forgot I had printed them on the
same color paper as the exam books. I felt so stupid.
Bummer on the data center upgrade...never mind Windows

As for the Net Spreadsheets, they're so easy to work
with and update. Folks who can't find a net aren't
looking very hard!!
Rick, that 2400 baud brings back memories. I was on
CompuServe in the mid-1980's at 300 baud...in 35 years,
so much has changed.
Glad you found the noise in the shack, and FB on the
other modes.
Charley, you'll find that net list real useful.
And, I had one of those Model 100 laptops and 300 baud
modems. I don't think I had the acoustic coupler, though.
I have a program in my BBS's file area with two BBS
programs to run on the Model 100. The BBS is at
tbolt.synchro.net (shameless plug (hi hi)) -- and it's
part of FIDONet.
Bob, good luck on that DMR rig and the SMS. As for the
tacos, I go for it ONLY if the meat is MILD.
I hope the grandkids are all OK.
Scott, I use the iptelnet program with the Outpost
Packet program setup, and it seems to work OK.

'twas a sad week - put the Corvette away as winter is
moving toward us - put it on the battery charger - threw
the cover on. I'll see it in the spring.
Our club hasn't had any VE sessions since early in the year.
And I'm thinking we may not have any more. Most of our VE's
are migrating to another club. I may have to join them.
I was supposed to do Pumpking Patrol this coming weekend.
I've done it the last 5 years. But this year it appears I've
been wrangled into doing another data center upgrade. Those
are time consuming and sometimes stressful - especially
when they decide to not go well.
I like your Net Spreadsheet. I can always find something on
there every night of the week!

Another one of those SSDD weeks..
I remember those data center jobs. I did a few back before the
internet, ie Ford Motor Co. just a half dozen data circuits
on dedicated 4 wire connections, and sweating bullets, hoping
that we had good 2400 baud circuits...
I spent some time chasing some noise in the shack, I think I
found it in a RS232 cable that was just a bit too close to one
of the coax cables, moved it and the noise went away.
Been playing with Robust Packet (WinRPR) and VARA CHAT. Also
been doing a bit of JS8. I picked up a couple lengths of
RG8X to better my run to the APRS antenna. Once there's a lull
in the rain, I might go out and install it.

to Oklahoma. Girl friend sister bad sick so in Muskogee area

One more story re Model 100
Acoustic modem one time called out from phonebooth with cups over
earpiece and mouthpiece just to see if it would work.
Connected ok but every time a truck passed by showed garbage on screen.
Fun to play with and learned a lot.

Storms were not a problem here in centeral Oklahoma.
Fingers crossed for the next few days, tho.
I'm still in Norman looking after grandkids. 6 weeks down and 2 more
to go.
I've been editing an existing DMR codeplug for my Anytone. Lots of
work, but getting close to what I want. This radio has SMS mode, and
I can get it to send short msg from radio through BrandMeister DMR
servers to my phone, but no luck going other direction. Need to study
a bit more...
My buddies back in Broken Arrow are doing "ham and tacos" again tonight.
Well, by that I mean they meed at a local taco truck, tank up, and then
go to a city park for the local Monday nite net.
Well, kids are in the tub, so I better go and make sure nobody drowned.
