And for some *real* oldies, the Yeasu FT-736 and FT-726, as long as it
has the satellite module installed, and the Kenwood TS-790.
I have both the TS-790 and FT-847. I've never tried the 790 on
satellites, but for terrestrial use, it has a better receiver (quieter)
than the 847.
I run my 847 under SatPC32 control, which I also use to control my
rotors through a Fox Delta interface box.

Your IC-2730 can be used for satellites, and the same is true for those
of us-who have been licensed for over 60 years and who are now in our
mid to late 70's -
who are still using - for satellites- some of the earlier ICOM
multi-mode gear, such as the ICOM 211, ICOM 251A and ICOM 451A, which
are frequently sold on
E-Bay. e.g. for $100 -to - $200 :

are over 40 years old.

That's very interesting curve. Guessing for most home users its more
cost effective to purchase more cells for increased power than paying
more for higher efficiency.
I really don't recall what I paid for remote radio site solar power
about 15 years ago. I believe they were 30 to 50w panels and cost
about $400. Our first panels were made by Arco and Solar Electric
(something) made the last ones we installed.
This was commercial mountain-top comm sites only reachable by
helicopter about one month/year due to weather. Our largest site was
shared with State of Alaska who maintained a mw link from Kenai
Peninsula to Kodiak Island (about 70 mi over water). We had five
radios, most of which were 5w but two had 30w amps (all
FM). Originally we used a battery bank rated at 10,800 AH at 13.2v
(were air cells) which had to be replaced every three years. But we
installed a two panel solar charged system using two 100 AH
deep-cycle batteries to supplement the fixed battery bank during
roughly 6-months of high sunlight in the arctic summer.
We thought that would extend the main battery bank life to four years
but it did not quite do it. Energy use analysis was complicated by
multiple users so our guess fell short.
Helicopter cost each year for one trip to the mountain ran $5,000 for
40min flight one-way and standby time on the mountain while we worked
(usually four hours). After being stuck on the mountain for seven
days in 40F-40mph winds in rain we decided to keep the helo on the
mountain so we could get off quickly in event of bad wx which could
develop in 15-min socking in the mountain top for long
duration. Winter had the shelter covered over under 15-20 foot of
snow with winds upward of 200 mph. Top of the mountain had
year-round snow cover.

If you're adventurous you could use a SDR on receive (Airspy, SDRplay,
FUNcube, ...) and any radio which transmits the desired mode on 2m / 70cms.
Myself I'm using an Airspy / FT-991 combination, in a week or two it'll be
fully automated by the computer.

I have had several FT 847 radios.Great low cost choice and works well with
satpc32.However ,for just a few dollars
More get a used IC910. Much better rx sens with a lower noise figure.Also
REAL
DNR circuitry.Make listening for long periods a pleasure,not so exhausting.
Also if you compare the specs of the IC910 and IC 9100 uhf and vhf
SECTIONS, you will see they are IDENTICAL!

I'm active again on satellite a lot, using my old TS-790,most of the time
manuel tuned, sometimes via pc. From time to time a change to TM255+455(
which can be tuned via pc homemade interface which is almost finished, or
Yaesu FT290+FT790,both with add-on ampli's from +-25w,manuel tuned.
Antennas in use: commercial 2m and 70cm crossyagis with pol.switch, homemade
crossyagis for 2,70 and 23. Just looking what is best for rx AO-7 mode A.
Look for TS-2000, FT-847,FT817 with amsat interface(arrl),IC-910...

I wouldn't focus on noise figure at the receiver, unless you happen to
have 1' of cable between the rig and your antenna. Instead, I'd put a
bias-T-powered LNA at the antenna to preserve your SNR (Friis formula).
Having recently built a U310-based LNA, I can say that a single night's
work of soldering and testing pays off well. Total parts cost was in the
$5 range.
I plan to build a new LNA based on a pHEMT just for fun. Only a couple
of bucks from Digikey. Why settle for 1.0dB when you can potentially get
0.25dB! :-)

Thanks ALL of you giving you comments and suggestions. I kept a tally sheet
to see which showed up the most. Of course, it's like "which car do you
like question." (smile) Seriously, your answers have been helpful.
Generally, I like a "table top" type radio as compared to the smaller mobile
units. That's just MY "druthers."
Zach, I appreciate you input on the FunCube Pro +. I do not have one, but
have played with the other cheaper types and several software packages.
Currently, I have settled with a SDRPlay RSP. What is the advantage(s) of
the FunCube dongle?
Again, thanks to everyone chipping in with their 2 cents. It helps me,
maybe others lurking.
