WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA
Weekly Wrap Up

During the week, Matt, VK7MAT, received a question asking how operators can submit their logs. This is a great question, and the process can vary slightly between programs.

Itâ€Ös important for activators to submit their logs, even if they donâ€Öt meet the minimum contacts required to activate the reference, as the contacts contribute to awards and statistics for both the activator and the hunter. Unfortunately, if an activators log isnâ€Öt uploaded, hunters wonâ€Öt receive any credit, especially for WWFF and POTA.

The preferred log format is ADIF (Amateur Data Interchange Format), although some programs also accept CSV format.

Each program has specific requirements for the information that must be included in a log. Matt, VK7MAT, recommends checking the website of each program for those details.

Each program has its own process for log uploads. For WWFF, activator logs are emailed to the relevant state or territory representative. In VK7, Andrew, VK7DW, is the state representative.

SOTA logs are uploaded directly by activators through the SOTA website. An added feature of the SOTA site is that hunters can also log their own contacts, ensuring they receive credit even if an activator doesn't upload a log.

POTA activator logs are uploaded directly through the POTA website. The file uploader allows for the simultaneous upload of single or multiple logs.

IOTA – Activator and Hunter contacts are added through the IOTA website, which also offers the option to import contacts from LOTW and Club Log.

When activating a multi-reference site, can you use the same log? Yes, you can. However, you will need to edit the log to ensure that it accurately reflects the relevant program, park, or summit identifiers for each reference. Some logging software & apps will allow you to export logs for each program or you can use software, such as mParks Converter, which will convert your logs to the relevant reference identifier information for you.

This week, Rodney, VK7HAM, Al, VK7AN, and Peter, VK7ZPE, activated Bradys Lookout State Reserve. The reserve offers stunning views of the Tamar Valley and was historically used as a hideout by the bushranger Matthew Brady.

Ian, VK7IAN, visited the Blackmans Bay Beach POTA reference, which had never been activated before, and successfully made 30 contacts during the activation.

Matt, VK7MAT, set up for the JMFD within the Mount Horror Regional Reserve, allowing the contacts made to count towards a park activation.

Happy activating and hunting.

Statewide SSTV Nights

Another busy net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZGK, FGGT, TW, ZCF, ZAB and KT sending forty five photos. The north south link was not operational so it wasnâ€Öt a state wide net but two separate local nets.

The main themes were:

A series on Street Art in Melbourne

The WEGS ADX transceiver building session at REAST

Betsy Island and activity on the John Moyle Memorial Field Day

Tourist attractions around the Tamar Valley

Other highlights were:

A Steampunk cafe in Mt Gambier

    Robots using Artificial Intelligence

Family pets including one using a laptop to keep warm

and the recoil of a tariff punch

As a trial this week, Tony VK7AX tuned his SSTV gateway transceiver to VK7RJG. Northern participants were then able to exchange photos via an International Gateway with PC1K and Bernhard DH1BM in Germany.

The trial was successful so Tony is planning to activate the connection next Thursday at 8:30 pm for 1 hour. He will put up a gateway Identifier when it is available. There is a delay in file transfers, so to minimise “double ups” a change in protocols is required. We will need to wait 30 seconds after the last transmission before sending the next photo to allow the gateway server to transmit any photos it has ready.

If this session is successful it may become a regular addition.

The photos sent can be monitored on the gateway server at the Web link in text version. https://www.qsl.net/vk7ax/sstvgate3/index.html

For this week the photos for the Southern Net can be seen on Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös SSTV websites. While those from the Northern net can be seen on NTARCâ€Ös website under blogs.

Firstly one item to mark on the calendar, next Club Technical Night on the 2nd of April, Andrew VK7DW is going to give a short presentation on the Fram2Ham Slow Scan TV simulation tests conducted from the International Space Station. These tests were designed to “simulate the challenges and unknowns” of transmitting 70 cm SSTV images from a Dragon capsule in the near future.

Enough of an explanation from me, come and hear it from the expert.

Last Wednesdayâ€Ös on air TechNet - Morse Code Course, hosted by Nic VK7WW, had a slightly different perspective to it. The usual Discord channel and the streamed audio were working as usual. However this time Jordan VK3ACU provided an independent live video stream on YouTube of the evening. No, not of Nic in his hut with his Morse Key!….. But of a dashboard incorporating a waterfall, transceiver setup, general information plus a Manual Morse Chart for the decoding of the Morse Code being sent. Nic started the evening off with the Manual Morse Chart – this allowed listeners to follow along, even those that didnâ€Öt know Morse Code. The chart allowed them, with relative ease, to decode the CW being sent. Simplistically you move up, down or across the chart each time and depending on whether you hear a dot or a dash. That explanation is a little bit simple but check out the chart and you should be able to follow what I mean, it worked for me! It certainly made for some interesting listening and watching from the perspective of being on the receiving end in Victoria.

Thank you Jordan for adding a different dimension to the evening activities.

The link for last weekâ€Ös live YouTube stream is in the text version of the broadcast, hopefully Jordan will be experimenting again and it will be the same link.
