...Widespread rain expected from the lower Mississippi valley to the
Northeast, with snow expected for northern Maine...

...Areas of snow and valley rain, along with below average temperatures
expected for much of the western U.S...

The low pressure system that brought widespread snow to portions of the
northern Plains and Upper Midwest will continue to weaken as it tracks
eastward. Precipitation will linger into the afternoon today. The cold
front associated with this low feature extends southward through the
Appalachians, Tennessee valley and the Gulf states. Widespread rain and
even some thunderstorms are expected from the lower Mississippi valley to
the Northeast today. A few locations across the lower Mississippi and
Tennessee valley may have periods of heavy rainfall. Snow is expected to
develop today across northern Maine as the precipitation spreads into
colder air already in place; which, may be heavy at times tonight into
Thursday.

Out west, rain and mountain snow will spread inland today as a cold front
moves onshore. The precipitation is forecast to reach the Intermountain
West by this evening, with snow expected at all but the lowest valley
elevations. Maximum temperatures across the West will be generally be
below average through Thursday - with highs expected to be 5 to 15 degrees
below average.
