Hello Vincent et al;

Of course humans make or break any mode within this or any other hobby.
I know I was sending my traffic down through the Sat Gate. It was a bit
of a haul but it made it. Even if the bulk of the others sent their mail
through the internet, the final decision to shut off the sat gates were
those who were running them only. I was still using them.

As for user complaints, most users had (and still dont) any proper knowledge
as to how we built and maintain the network. Most of those "complaints" were
just rhetoric with no substance to back them up. Here in EastNet we have
always been very fortunate to have at least one (1) developer of software
who also knew networking over multiple protocol layers. Just as we were able
to cut through the misinformation fed to us by some other developers overseas,
we've been able to make our network more useful over time. We're leaning
more towards the use of IP because of how it's cross platform compatible
with various applications making it more flexible - something I said we
should have done decades ago but too many old timers insisted in fooling
themselves that IP = wired transport. Nothing could be further from the
truth! A protocol, like with ax.25, is like running water where it'll use
the best transport available first. If RF is it, then that's what it'll use.

We're in the process of rebuilding the network. I've built 2 boxes for upstate
NY already. In the past couple of years I've built up about a dozen nodes
that we think are a bit stable by their stats:
w4mlb:
Uptime: 198 days, 35 minutes

w1edh:
Uptime: 370 days, 6 hours 16 minutes

n4lem:
Uptime: 418 days, 23 hours 6 minutes

I think we've come up with a fairly solid solution that routes:
ax25, fldigi, netrom, rose, ip. We're easily able to link mobile devices
to our network as well. This is the attraction for those young bucks wanting
to get into the hobby.

As for reading into biases to a point yes however we shouldn't be shutting
down services because we think that they're not going to be used anymore.
Such is the case with the sat gates and our PBBS here in Ct. We were forced
to go internet forwarding because all the Pactor/Sat gates went dark. Anyone
looking to help rebuild and educate others is always welcome.
