Hi K.O. and all,
UNIVAC, I remember it well and how The Jetsons, an animated TV series goofed
on the name. UNIBLAB was a robot on wheels with a huge flying saucer head
that made George Jetson's work life miserable. Around that time robots that
were earlier touted as giving us more liesure time were rapidly putting
people out of work, you can't get more miserable at work when you're out of
work.
Here's one interesting bit of information overlooked by that bull, you may be
wondering why a hardware glitch is called a computer bug. In WW2 the Iowa
Class battleships (Remember the USS New Jersey firing frogs at Bob VK6BE?)
were outfitted with the first fire control computers using vacuum tubes and
mechanical relays. One failed thankfully not while the ship was under fire
and upon inspection a moth was found mashed between the contacts of one of
the relays. It makes me wonder why open frame relays in such a critical
application when at the same time the R-390 radio receiver used plug in metal
encased relays for T-R operation when paired with the BC-610 transmitter.
Today smart phones are smarter than those who use them, just something to
make YOU wonder.
"New Jersey, the most American of all states. It has everything from
wilderness to the Mafia. All the great things and all the worst,
like Route 22."
