Being a US Army General of course Eisenhower admired Germany's Autobahn,
It's a system of military highways built to handle heavy vehicles including
tanks. In addition there were/are long level sections that could/can be used
as runways. He copied it beginning with US 1 along the Eastern Seaboard that
runs through my home town Rahway, NJ. As a child I saw the original concrete
construction common in those days. Today it's paved over with asphalt where
sections remain, others have been reclaimed by nature.

Today's interstate system is also a network of military highways constructed
for the same purposes, I 95 has replaced US 1 and feeders/connectors have
three digits such as 195 and no I designation. I was too young to remember
construction of US 1 but old enough to witness that of 195, built to military
specifications it was a LOT of work. FWIW this was the one time I didn't see
the usual one guy working while the rest stand around jaw jackin'. (;->)
