An interesting footnote to the Spanish treasure ships sunk off Florida by a
hurricane in 1715; modern salvage operations were covered as expected by The
National Geographic Society. What appeared in the magazine was interesting,
but films made into TV presentations were fascinating especially the
underwater scenes. What they didn't say at the time was what happened
afterward, the salvagers had to battle the greedy US government and the state
of Florida that also battled each other over the treasure. Some won, some
lost, only a small fraction remains and the greater part was lost never to be
seen again.
Hey, whatever happened to finders keepers? Unfortunately US Law doesn't
agree, "You find it we keep it."
