With the various desktops available for X, the average 'doze person can
get into linux quite easily. Once I swapped out a 'doze hard drive on
someone while they were asleep and replaced it with a drive loaded with
linux. When they booted up they said "what is this??" to which I just
said "use it and hush up." They learned it very quickly and couldn't
believe how it didn't lock up like 'doze does often.

For BBS usage, there's thunderbird. I personally use Evolution (by Novell)
for PMAIL and one can use any news reader for bulletins with FBB since it
support both SMTP/POP3 and NNTP. There's ColorConvers for convers usage.
There's also some web/java plugins for doing DXC and Telnet as well.

Of course, for the more advanced person, you can easily develop your own
apps and share them with the amateur community as I do.
