Short Range Forecast Discussion
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
544 AM EDT Tue Apr 09 2019

Valid 12Z Tue Apr 09 2019 - 12Z Thu Apr 11 2019

...A major winter storm will produce blizzard conditions and very heavy
snow accumulations in the Plains and Upper Midwest tonight through
Thursday...

...The same storm will produce heavy snow in the Northern Rockies and
Wasatch range starting today...

...There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the
Southeast...

...Light snow accumulations will continue in northern New England...

Low pressure over the Central/Eastern Gulf Coast will move eastward off
the southern Atlantic coast by Tuesday evening. The system will produce
showers and thunderstorms over the Southeast, likewise, moving offshore
overnight. A complicated area of low pressure over the Lower Great Lakes
will move off the Northeast coast overnight Tuesday. The storm will
produce snow over northern New England through Wednesday evening. In
addition, rain with embedded thunderstorms will develop over parts of the
Northeast/northern Mid-Atlantic and move offshore by late Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, a major late-season winter storm will develop over parts of the
Northern Rockies and move eastward to the Central Plains/Upper Mississippi
Valley by Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy snow and strong winds will
produce life-threatening travel conditions in parts of the Plains and
Upper Midwest. The heavy wet snow may also lead to power outages.
Elsewhere the storm will produce snow over the Cascades with lower
elevation rain from the Pacific Northwest Coast inland to parts of the
Northern Rockies on Tuesday. By Tuesday evening, snow will spread into
parts of the Great Basin while continuing in the Northern Rockies.
Overnight Tuesday, snow will spread into the Central Rockies and the
Northern High Plains. On Wednesday, snow will become heavy over parts of
the Northern/Central Plains. Expect blizzard conditions as northeast winds
intensify. Rain will also stretch from parts of the Central Plains
eastward into the Middle Mississippi Valley and Western Ohio Valley.
Heavy snow will also expand over the Upper Mississippi Valley into parts
of the Upper Great Lakes overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

This storm is expected to intensify rapidly late Tuesday into Wednesday.
This will produce potentially damaging winds across a large region
including the Southwest states, Great Basin and much of the middle section
of the nation.

Additional upper-level energy will move into the Northwest Wednesday night
into Thursday, yielding additional snow over parts of the Northern Rockies
and Great Basin and rain in the Pacific Northwest.
