Greece earthquake: Major 6.4 magnitude tremor felt as far away as Israel
Experts said the quake, which happened around 220km south of the islands of Karpathos and Rhodes this morning, was felt as far away as Syria, Egypt, Israel and Turkey
Tremors have been felt for hundreds of miles after a large earthquake struck off the coast of Greece early this morning.
Estimates for the magnitude of the quake in the eastern Mediterranean range between 5.8 and 6.4 on the Richter scale.
It is unclear whether it has caused any injuries, but the force was reportedly felt as far away as Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Israel.
Dramatic video shows buildings shaking during the terrifying incident.
The epicentre is 149km south east of Karpathos, the US United States Geological Survey (USGS) said in an update this morning.
It estimated the magnitude to be 6.0 - slightly lower than the 6.4 asserted by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (ESMC).
The ESMC posted on Twitter : "This M6.4 #earthquake was felt in Eastern Mediterranean Sea, SOUTHERN GREECE, SOUTHERN GREECE."
It later said the quake had happened around 219k south of Rodos.
People have reported feeling the ground shake as the incident unfolded at around 6.30am local time.
One Twitter user responded to the agency: "The earthquake was well felt in Jerusalem."
Another wrote: "In Helwan, Cairo was very strong."
The tremor was felt on the islands of Crete, Santorini and Rhodes, Greek State TV said.
