From a Yank who witnessed it first hand I'll start with the fake oil embargo.
We, myself includes saw so many tankers anchored just outside ports they all
but caused a blockade. Greedy oil companies saw a convenient scapegoat, blame
it on the Arabs when we had plenty of oil of our own and federal reserves
were full to the top.
American aircracaft carriers on wheels admittedly were gas guzzlers, but made
worse when anti-pollution devices were fitted, I owned a 1973 Chevy 350cid
that was worse than my 1963 350cid Oldsmobile. Those Japanese "econo-boxes"
cornered the market, Detroit was faced with a do or die situation, so they
produced "compacts" with smaller engines, the era of muscle cars was over.
Fast forward, with today's high horsepower fuel efficient low emission
engines they're back. Well, those macho driven civilian versions of the
Hummer were an exception, but I haven't seen any lately. The common exception
however is the soccer mom driven SUV I often see driven less than a mile to
the grocery store when really smart shoppers like myself ride bicycles. I
have twin wire baskets fitted over the rear wheel on my SUB, Smart Utility
Bicycle.
That having been said, that 55mph speed limit was yet another presidential
lie Nixon and successors were/are infamous for. It didn't conserve fuel,
engine design did that, it didn't improve safety either, improved seat belts
and air bags did that. Statistics only showed fatalities per passenger mile,
not the overall number of stupids that increase every year along with traffic
density. Why call them accidents when almost each and every crash is caused
by someone doing something stupid?
An offshoot of the limit showed itself in a spike in music industry sales,
I'm sure you can find quite a number of protest songs and parodies. Leave it
to America's most infamous gun nut of whom I have a picture firing a machine
gun on stage at an outdoor concert, the one that Cat Scratch Fever went to
his head, Mister Insanity himself, Ted "The Nooge" Nugent screaming I CAN'T
DRIVE 55!" I'll bet he was among the millions feeding the kitty with a pile
of wolf tickets here in NJ being a 4-98 (the motor vehicle statute number) I
hear the State Police (durn revenuers) calling in on my scanner all day.
