Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings
are the rule here into early next week, with
highs from 100 to 105, with heat indexes from
110 to 115, if not higher in both cases. There
were some severe storms overnight, and while
some areas got rain, most areas are dry. Now,
only 12 of Arkansas' 75 counties aren't under
burn bans, with High Fire Danger across much
of west Arkansas, and Moderate Fire Danger
elsewhere. Little relief in rainfall or hot
weather is seen through at least late July;
but it may be more like early September. So,
the heat advisories and warnings may be around
for awhile.
I took Lyft to church yesterday, and because
there was a shortage of drivers, it was rather
expensive. Thankfully, a friend took me to
lunch afterwards, and brought me back home.
But, I figure going once a month is better
than none. But, I'm having to use eye drops
several times a day, with the dry corneas;
and have to break from the computer every
so often, due to my eyes, as well as pain
in my neck and back. At least I have plenty
of food and drink here to last awhile.
I got a good report from the urologist last
week, and they have set up the cardiac
ablation surgery for August 16. It'll be
done outpatient, and I should be able to
come home by midday, but I have to be at
Arkansas Heart Hospital at 6am, which means
being up at 3am. I might take off from The PCL
Net the night of August 15, which marks 45
years since my family arrived in Arkansas from
Florida...and Elvis Presley died the next day.
I'm waiting on exam supplies from ARRL/VEC
for an exam Saturday...I likely will stay
home until late week, as it's so hot, as
noted earlier. I won't be going to either
the Mena or Morrilton Hamfest (the latter
more like a tailgate swapfest), and they no
longer have a hamfest in Little Rock. And,
since I don't drive anymore, I likely won't
be going to any hamfest ever again.
Noted a rainshower north of me, but it
moved east and fizzled out. Glad I didn't
have to abort the net because of storms.

GE All,
I took a few days off from work last week and
worked on cleaning up my basement. As most
basements can be, mine had become the resting
place for things you weren't using, but didn't
want to throw away. After 20+ years, I had
amassed quite a collection of stuff - some
people call it junk. 4 trips to Goodwill later,
I can actually move around down there! Still
more to do - but I'm happy with the progress.
Not much happening on the radio front. I have
plans to re-hang my end-fed wire - not sure
when I'll get to that.
We got some rain today. My yard had turned brown,
but I think that's about to change as it rained
all day today!

Good evening Daryl and all on the NET.
The hot weather for the past week has been
keeping me indoors in the afternoons. In the
mornings, I've been trying to get in a 10
mile bike ride every day, then whatever else
I can get done between then and my NOON-TIME
2M VHF NET. I start the day with big plans,
and end up pushing it out until the next day.
Today, I was able to have a 40M PACTOR session
with one of the guys in California, then managed
to do my ride, do a bit of local grocery shopping,
and vaccuum the house. Like you Bob, not much radio
play lately, signals are weak.
And ditto re the accumulation of stuff...Arlene's
planning a garage sale next month, hoping to pass
on some of the stuff that's been hanging about
for a few years.

It is awalys good to see some new calls on here.
It has been terribly hot. At least I think so.
I need to get a mast up for my 6m antenna. I keep
hoping it will cool off a bit.
Jackie has had to postpone watering because of the
heat.
Just want wish everyone a good week and try to stay
cool.

Please consider this my early check-in. I'm meeting
up with our local group tonight. Too hot to sit
outside at the taco truck, so going to grab some
tacos and head to Greg's house, where he has a big
garage with nice a/c going! It's around 100 right
now, and they are predicting 107 here tomorrow!
I have been able to do a little radio work since
we last talked. Our group did field day as KT5DIG
Tulsa Digital Radio Club. We were 3A Battery, so 5w
qrp on battery with solar assist. Had a lot of fun
and made 325 contacts. Our preliminary score is 4150.
Not near as good as last year, but respectable. We
were #1 in 3A battery the last 2 years, but don't
think this score is going to be the winning score.
I received a qrp-labs qdx digital qrp kit in the mail
and have put it together. It is 4 band (20,30,40,80m)
with max 5w out. Even running it at 2w, it's pretty
easy to make ft8 contacts. I put it in WSPR mode on
20m and again, even at 2 watts, it was received in
Europe, Australia, and all across North America. It
is configured to look like a Kenwood 450/480 so most
digital programs work out of the box. I've used wsjtx
and fldigi with no problems. The hard part about the
kit is wrapping toroids, with one a multi-tap toroid.
Patience is the key trick on it.
