I never seem to have a boring week, as you'll see
momentarily (hi hi).
The hot and dry weather continues in Arkansas, with
Heat Advisories, and Excessive Heat Warnings; along
with high fire danger statewide, and burn bans in
all but 6 counties. However, some relief is on the
way, with a pattern change, and thunderstorms likely
from Wednesday through next Monday. Beneficial rain
is forecast, and some severe weather (damaging winds)
are possible. Highs in the 80s are better than highs
in the 100s. The storms may keep me QRT from Wednesday
through at least next Monday, so NS2B may have to do
scibe for the net next week.
The dry corneas are giving me fits daily, where I have
to use eye drops several times a day. But, as noted, I
gave up driving just over a month ago, and sold the car.
The funds I got has allowed me to pay some medical and
other bills. It sucks not having transportation, but I
don't have to deal with road rage drivers, gas prices,
car repairs, insurance, license tags, taxes, etc. I saw
where there was a shooting at Dallas Love Field earlier
today...it's gotten where you're afraid to travel; never
mind the resurgence of Covid-19.
I'll get the pre-ablation blood work on August 9. It's
hard to believe next Monday is August 1, and the area
Hobby Lobby stores ALREADY have Christmas stuff up. I
knew I should've ordered my Easter stuff early (hi hi).
And, it's "the most wonderful time of the year"...Back
To School for the kids (hi hi). Back to the procedure,
if the blood work is OK, I'll have the ablation on Aug.
16. I originally thought I'd have to be there at 6am,
but they told me I could wait until 9am. The Huntsville
Hamfest is a few days after that, but I obviously will
skip that, as I'm sure I'll still be recovering. I need
to try to do some laundry tomorrow or Wednesday, before
the storms arrive.
I did a license exam session this past Saturday, but
computer problems made me forget to print up answer
sheets. The form I found, and was able to get printed,
didn't have a place for the email address, but the
candidate aced his Technician exam, and the other 2
VE's there verified that...so, when I got home, I
transferred/traced the data to the new answer sheet
with that data...and was able to print some new answer
sheets. My next test session isn't until Oct. 15. I'm
glad ARRL/VEC allows me to scan in all the forms to
create a PDF file, that I can upload...and the examinees
can get their callsign by Tuesday after the session, if
they pay the $35 fee for the new license. I don't have
to worry about that until March, 2029.
I didn't get a chance to mail off the exam result forms
today (even though ARRL/VEC got them via the PDF file),
but I'll do that Tuesday, as I have to pick up some items
I ordered from Dr. Leonard's. I also ordered a keychain
LED light, and a wallet from Amazon...but told them I
could wait until August 1 to get them...so, I could get
free shipping.
I'm hoping I'll be selected for the Google Meet conference
tomorrow for Lyft users...if so, I'll be sent a $300 gift
card. That'd pay for my Post Office Box for another year
(around $215 cost)...but, I have the funds if I don't get
selected for the conference. At least with the Post Office
Box, I can check it once a week. It's too expensive to do
Lyft to church more than once a month, as the number of
drivers is limited on Sunday morning. At least a week ago,
a friend took me to lunch afterwards, then brought me home.
I stayed home this past weekend.
Sadly, I found out that one of my VE's lost his battle to
pancreatic cancer. I had given him his Extra Class exam
several years ago. From what I understand, the OM went
downhill real fast. I doubt any family has escaped the
scourge of cancer.
That's the same thing that killed my Dad and his sister.

It was a hot one! 90+ and high humidity every day.
Today was the first comfortable day we've had in a while.
Is dry corneas the same thing as dry eye? I had that a
couple years ago - they did a treatment thing on me that
at first I was pretty sure was akin to snake oil and rain
dancing, but damned if it didn't work!!
The repeater club I normally do VE testing with had pretty
much stopped testing because we had lost a couple of our
VE's to retirement (they moved away!) - but it looks like
we're going to throw in with another radio club in the next
county over as they have a similar problem so we can get
back to testing - it'll be nice.
Cancer sucks - got my mom and my little sister. I guess
that's the way it goes...

Good evening Daryl and all on the net.
Weather has been hot. No rain for the past couple of weeks.
We have some fires burning in the area. Nothing close to us
though.
On Saturday, I was helping a new ham install an end fed
antenna. Sling shot, lead weight, fishing line and rope...
Had to shut down for a couple hours while a Tstorm rolled
through. That storm sparked a few fires. We had helicopters
and firefighters staging in a field on the other side of the
road from her place. That particular fire is out now. Anyway,
the experimental end fed got up and it works. She's going to
pick up a commercially built unit and we will hoist it using
the same tackle as this one.
I've been riding the bike pretty much every day...weight still
not coming off though.
The next project at my QTH will be to replace the horizontal
boom on my mast and add a 6M set of hamsticks.
That will have to be done in the morning before the heat kicks
in, so I have to plan out exactly what I want to do, so I can
get it done in one go.
I just got an IRLP node in the mail today from KL7M in Anchorage,
AK, so I was setting it up just before the net. It sounds pretty
good. It's a radioless node so it's just connected to a headset.
IRLP node 3409.
I've also been playing with ALLSTARLINK, and that is also a
radioless node...node 56824.
I might connect radios, sometime down the road.
Almost forgot, next Monday is a holiday for us, so I won't be
here. I'll be back on-air the following Monday.

Bob, it's similar, but I'm not in a low humidity environment,
so I don't know why it's bothering me.
Reflector 58 went TU this last week; they're working to get
it back up. Several D-Star Nets meet on it during the week.
I'll let you know if weather will keep me QRT next Monday.
I was hoping Scott would've been here tonight, so I could
ask about Jackie's crops.
Rick, darn screen saver kicked in twice, so I didn't see you
type the >>> to show you were done. I haven't done either of
those modes. The weight is easier to put on than take off.
Be sure to email Bob, so he'll give you a courtesy check next
week.
