With next Monday, Sep. 5, being Labor Day,
the PCL Net will NOT meet that night. It
will return on Monday, Sep. 12. We hope
everyone enjoys the long holiday weekend.
Bob (NS2B) will send out a reminder message.
My computer will enjoy the time off...as
Windows 11 is being ornery tonight with the
screen saver and other deals. Since we won't
be here next week, I have a lot to talk
about tonight...thank goodness for copy and
paste (hi hi).
I see my PCP for a full physical and blood
work (with a diabetes check) tomorrow, so
I have to starve myself until this time
Tuesday evening. I may splurge on ordering
a big meal with delivery from Grubhub after
I get home, as I'll be very hungry. I still
have plenty of food and drink here, but
every so often, I like a change of pace,
food wise. He'll chew me out for being too
fat, but I have other issues if I cut down
on my eating. Besides, I do watch what I eat;
from the plate to the mouth...and when I eat
ham, I'm cannibalistic (hi hi).
The oldest hamfest west of the Mississippi
is Sept. 9 and 10, at Mena, Arkansas...but,
I have no plans to attend. I basically stay
home now, except for a weekly run to the P.O.
Box. While not having a car sucks, I sure
don't miss all the expenses involved with
having one. To my knowledge, less than 5
hamfests are in Arkansas anymore; Little
Rock's last one was in 2016. I am still
dealing with dry corneas and blurred vision
at times, but at least I'm in no danger of
going blind; yet, it's too dangerous for me
to drive anymore.
I saw where several points on the Mississippi
River in east Arkansas have low water levels,
so that likely means no navigation going on.
Labor Day Weekend might be stormy here, but
Thursday is the first day of meteorological
fall and September. Where has the year gone??
Too early to tell what the fall foliage will
be like, but a sure sign of fall is college
football season.
I just wish the storms would hold off until
after my nets are done...there are storms
in the state now, but I should be OK for
the nets tonight. At least my area hasn't
had the severe flooding that areas of Dallas,
St. Louis, Colorado, and Kentucky, have had
recently. But, we're approaching the peak of
hurricane season, and that can spell trouble
for the region, as dying tropical systems
can bring flooding and tornadoes to the area.
My yard man is coming by in the morning; I
will be glad when the grass stops growing for
the winter. They also don't do mosquito
treatments during the winter.
I saw where Icom has the IC-905 coming out
soon, but I have no plans to purchase it.
Thanks to a ham in New Zealand, I'm on TGIF
with DMR on my nets done on the QUadNet
Array, which also has D-Star, WIRES-X, and
Fusion. I thought TGIF stood for "Toes Go
In First", and I can't help but think of
the meme where a ham is holding a cardboard
sign, saying "Not Homeless...Need Help With
DMR. Please Help!!" (hi hi).

The week was pretty good. Following Rick's
lead using Hustler mobile antennas in dipole
configurations I order the parts to build a 40m
dipole using Hustler mobiles. The parts came
Saturday - I assembled, tuned, and erected it
yesterday - it fixed my local communcations
problem with the local Winlink server and today
I made 15 FT8 contacts without really trying.
So by golly they work! It's a little narrow -
50kc of centered around 7075kc - not bad for a
40m antenna that's only 18 feet long.
I like the TGIF network - I spend a lot of time
monitoring the TGIF talkgroup. And there are
other talkgroups I like - the East Coast
reflector, historically IRLP only, has a
talkgroup there - and the DoDropIn Echolink has
a talkgroup there as well.
Yeah, taco bob is probably eating taco's!
I hear other hams talking about grounding this
or doing that to protect against lightning
strikes - I stay out of those conversations
because from first hand experience I can say
there is nothing you do against a direct hit
except completely disconnect.
I'm impressed enough with these hustler
resonators I may have to buy a 20m set now!

GE fellows
Hamvention in May purchased two lightning/surge
arrestors. One came in yesterday. DX Engineering
said other should arrive late October.
FB on Hustler dipole. MANY years ago had full
set of Hustler resonators. Now have ham sticks
and sometimes run them dipole configuration.
Handy setup.
New power supply installed MOBRA node Forsythe.
The old telephone central office battery probably
25 years ago not holding charge.
Node talking to Huntsville barely. Next time over
there will raise power to 50 watts, should
improve connection. Hearing Huntsville ok just
VERY slow.
Been experimenting with ANOTHER 80 meter dipole.
Only up 20 feet so resonance way low.
Just remembered first Novice station in 70s.
Tube transmitter and receiver and VFO. Used
spark plug with VERY narrow gap for lightning/
surge protector
Not sure how effective but thankfully never a
problem.

I think Rick and Arlene are off celebrating
their anniversary this week. And, not sure
where Taco Bob is tonight.
Bob, FB on the antenna...that isn't bad at all.
I'm usually just on the air for my nets...I
spend more time with my BBS. As for the lightning,
if you don't do the disconnect, it'll do it for
you. GL if you plan to get the 20m resonators.
Charley, FB on the lightning arrestors, but no
amount of protection will stop damage from a
direct hit. One ham found that out the hard way.
I used HamSticks several years ago...they do
the job, even for an indoor antenna. And, FB
on the new power supply on MOBRA at Forsythe.
All batteries seem to discharge so fast. Hope
you can improve the connection with Huntsville.
Hope Scott and Jackie are OK. And FB on the 80m
dipole...hope that works out for you.
When I didn't see the initial <ENTER>, I thought
we had lost you on the second round. Glad you
were still in there, and that the Novice station
setup wasn't a problem back then.
