I got a good report from the cardiologist this
morning, and I can stop taking the blood thinner
once I finish the current prescription. I don't
have to see him again until late January. The EKG
and all the vitals this morning were excellent.
I'm glad I pay an extra $10 a month for the Lyft
Pink. It gives me priority pickup, a break on the
pricing, and if I have to cancel a ride at the very
last minute, they take care of the $5 cancellation
fee, by offering a $5 discount on my next ride, if
I book it within 15 minutes. This morning, the first
driver had a TALL pickup truck, and I could NOT step
up into it (never mind he had no grab bar). So, I had
to cancel it, and get a second ride, and her car was
easier to get into.
On the way back from the clinic, next to the Post
Office facility (Where I go once a week to check the
P.O. Box), is a donut shop, so I treated myself to 6
chocolate ice donuts and an orange juice (the heart
doctor might not have liked that (hi hi)). I don't
have to go back to see him until late January.
But, the female rider with Lyft on the way home had
another tall vehicle, and it was an effort to get
in there. I should've asked her to push my butt in
(hi hi). But, she was very sweet and understanding.
I have to see if I can update my account with Lyft
for "requiring low step vehicles". Uber was hacked
recently, but I'm not sure how much of their data
was stolen...yet I don't use Uber anymore.
A strong cold front moved through here this past
weekend, with some severe weather in the region
(there were warnings for my area Saturday, and in
southwest Arkansas Sunday). But, with the cooler
temperatures and lower humidity, the gusty winds
are creating high to extreme fire danger, and no
rain is expected for another week. A Fire Weather
Watch has been issued for southeastern Arkansas,
and that may be expanded, and upgraded to a Red
Flag Warning.
I'm glad I'm not in Florida, where Hurricane Ian
has set his sights. They've got hurricane and storm
surge warnings along with evacuations for Tampa Bay,
and many other areas. They're expecting significant
flooding, wind damage, and tornadoes across much of
Florida. Amateur Radio nets are active with the
Hurricane Watch Net, the VoIP Hurricane Prep Net,
and the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Net,
among others. I'm sure Amtrak and airline service
will be stopped across much of the southeast US.
They've suspended tolls across many roads in the
region. I've been watching briefings on the Tropical
Tidbits website with Dr. Levi Cowan. As of the 8pm
EDT advisory, he's at 100 mph, forecast to get up to
140 mph (CAT 4) at peak intensity.
I saw where of all the names, the "I" storm has
been retired more than any others. With the shallow
nature of the concave coastline, Tampa Bay is "a
sitting duck", similar to New Orleans is, with the
Gulf Of Mexico, the Mississippi River, and Lake
Ponchatrain surrounding it. They are running out of
supplies, and pleading with folks to evacuate. They
are expecting at least a 10 to 15 foot storm surge
in Tampa Bay. Had Ian been a CAT 5 coming in, they
could see a 30 foot surge, and much of the area
would be submerged.
Lots of hams, utility companies, and others are heading
down there to stage for getting things back after
Ian leaves the area. It'll be active in the tropics
through at least October...back in 1989, Hugo, that
hit Charleston, struck in mid-October, as a CAT 4.
The Simulated Emergency Test is this weekend, but
I won't be doing anything with it. It's difficult
to sit at the computer for long periods of time
anymore, and even though I don't have a pacemaker,
or need one right now, I can't afford RF gear. I
just restarted both of my D-Rats nodes, and had to
upgrade Winlink Express. Big update to Microsoft
Windows 10 and especially 11 this last week...the
latter took nearly 10 hours and 3 reboots to finish!!
I had a water leak repaired last week...a bad PVC
valve. But, thanks to the $20 a month I pay for
water heater and water line insurance, there was
no charge for repairs. But, the iron in the line
has the water being brown, so I have to order out
for drinks. The garbage disposal switch in the
kitchen is stuck, and the drain backs up otherwise.
So, I can only use the bathroom sink for water, but
still have to run the water to clear the line out.
I went to a Mexican restaurant after church the last
2 Sundays, and ordered "an ABBY Special"...grilled
chicken with Spanish Rice, peppers, and white cheese
sauce. I drank a bunch of sweet tea to cool my mouth,
but otherwise it was good. It filled me up the rest
of the day. I just didn't feel like ordering the
cheeseburger and french fries. Since H.A.M. stands
for "Have Another Meal", and you don't call us "Late
For Dinner", you know I just had to talk about food;
but at least I wasn't cannibalistic with ham (hi hi).

The trip was excellent!
Good news on getting off the blood thinners Daryl -
that stuff can control your life - glad to hear
you can stop it.
So in Branson last week, saw a bunch of stuff I'd
never been to before. As you know - you can live
there forever and never see eveything - went to
Dolly's Stampede, saw Shepherd of the Hills, saw the
Bass Pro Aquarium, and of course an obligatory trip
to Silver Dollar City and Marvel Cave. Me and Charley
kept swapping texts but never managed to cross paths -
even though I think we were at SDC at the same time!
Obviously no radio work last week!
Scott: congrats on the retirement! I was planning to
retire coming up on October 21 - but my boss hinted
that maybe I should hang on for a bit cuz there might
be layoffs coming and he might be able to get me a
severence package! I don't know how that works - but ok.
Rick: kidney stones don't sound like fun - good luck
with that.

Good evening Daryl and all on the net.
Another good week. I got the end fed working nicely
by running a 20 ft wire to a nail in the ground from
the 9:1 balun counterpoise connection. Working good
on 80M and 40M...and I can do WSPR on 160M.
Oh, forgot, had a medical incident last Tuesday, had
to go to the clinic...several times...and for blood
tests. Next Thursday I have an ultrsound on the
kidneys sheduled, they are suggesting kidney stones.
But all seems to be working ok at present...even had
the back of my eyeballs tickled...
The last couple of days, I haven't been doing a lot...
just lazy...but I'm still riding the bike in the
mornings. It's definitely cooling off, low 40s again
this morning and 80F this afternoon. One more day of
sunshine before the rain comes on Wednesday.
Well, that's my excitement for the past week. Glad you
had a good trip Bob.
Scott, ditto on congrats retiring, and congrats also
to Jackie on the new venture. And thanks re the antenna
work...gotta keep busy...or she'll put me to work on
something less fun.

I have been busy getting caught up on some yard work.
I injured my knee memorial day weekend. Just last week,
got to the point where I use it without extreme pain.
I have been retired for a month today. I have several
radio projects in the works. I have a 6m ant and plan
to put a 6m aprs node on the air soon.
I am headed to the Joplin Hamfest this weekend. It
should be nice weather I think. Jackie is doing well.
She has started a soap business selling unscented soap
molded like farm animals. They seem to be selling well
at the local feed and seed.

Rick, bummer on the kidney stones...been there, done
that, got the wardrobe. Since I quit drinking soda
nearly 3 years ago, I haven't had any. FB on the
antennas, and how you have to keep busy with projects
to avoid "less fun things". It is turning cooler here
as well.
Scott, bummer on the knee injury...glad you're getting
better. Congratulations on the retirement, and FB on
Miss Jackie's new business. Enjoy the Joplin Hamfest.
