I'm glad the net was off last week...I had to
rebuild the registry on the Windows 11 laptop,
then reinstall a bunch of programs...besides
dealing with storms last week. I also changed
my anti-virus program to Avast. Too bad one has
to be on guard for malware, etc. I had to redo
my setup file, as I couldn't login when I first
tried it this evening.
The dog days of summer are here...between the
idiots shooting off fireworks, etc. in the city,
and the weather going from severe storms to
intense heat, no wonder the dogs and everyone
else has gone mad (hi hi). I was so worried
about the errant sparks setting the lawn or
the roof on fire. You're afraid to report them,
as if they find out, they'll kill you, then
ransack and burn your residence to cover up the
nefarious deed.
I had to cancel a ham radio license exam session
this past Saturday...the faculty advisor came
down with Covid-19, and there were too many
logisitical issues to try to do a session...
including some of my VE team being unavailable
for various reasons.
I finally got the Amazon Gift Cards from my Amtrak
Guest Rewards points, since I won't be traveling
outside of central Arkansas anymore...so I can use
that to buy several non-perishable food items, and
have them shipped here. They thought the purchase
of $475 worth of gift cards was fraud...I had to
confirm that it was legitimate. Now, to figure out
what I want...although with the price of things,
I'll go through that fast.
The dry corneas are making it very difficult to be
at the computer for long periods of time; not to
mention the pain in my back and legs. I took 2
Tylenol this morning...looks like 2 more before
bed tonight. I'm in moderate pain right now, and am
in pain almost constantly. As I told the nurse when
I had the bone density scan done in late June (that
was very painful), "they shoot horses, don't they??"
(hi hi).
My lawn guy comes by to mow the yard in the morning
(it's done twice a month, for all the rain we've had
lately). I'll be glad when November through February
gets here, and I won't have to worry about that expense
until spring. My next expenses are the Post Office Box
(which I may only do for 6 months, or let lapse), and
the yearly termite inspection fee...both in August...
then the property tax for October...it never ends
(sigh!). At least I won't have the car expense next
year...I wish I had known to sell it before May 31
last year...that would've saved me some money this year.
I see the female nurse practitioner at the urologist
on Thursday for my annual exam (at least she's cute
(hi hi))...but I have to be up before the butt crack of
dawn to get the transportation provided by my HMO to
the "front and back check", which I know most men aren't
"nuts" over (hi hi). At least I'll be back home before
the heat really kicks in, and I can go back to bed for
a bit. I still have to schedule the annual physical with
my PCP for sometime in September. I'm leery about getting
the 4th Covid-19 booster, after the chronic fatigue I've
had after the 3rd one last November.

Nah, I don't to the track again until next weekend - and
they're a more docile crowd - should be almost boring
relatively speaking!
Speaking of fireworks - went to a couple different firework
shows last weekend - one here in my local town - and one
out in Syracuse. Both were pretty impressive. They must dump
a lot of money on those!
Speaking of computers, there was a time when I liked/enjoyed
rebuilding computers - I think I'm past that now - so I feel
your pain!
On the radio front, I think I mentioned a couple weeks ago
that I got my GMRS license. This is pretty sad, but there
is almost more activity on the local GMRS repeaters than
there is on the ham repeaters. And many of the people on
GMRS I recognize their voices as being hams anyway! Weird.
Charley, We had bad smoke last week, but it's cleared up now.
No flooding here, most of that east of us.

Good evening Daryl, and all on the NET.
I had another busy week, checked out a couple of radios for
a ham trying to sell his equipment.
I scored a TS-790A 2M/70CM all mode rig, that I just had
to replace the backlight bulbs with LEDs and resistors,
and I ordered a battery container for the expired memory
battery, and that arrived today, just have to solder it in.
The other radio is a TS-50, and it has leaking caps, a bit
of corrosion on a board and needs a new memory battery.
I ordered a capacitor kit for it, and after that gets fixed
I can troubleshoot to see why no RX or TX...
I also contiued to fight with a couple of laptops I fixed,
trying to load debian and ALLSTARLINK on them, only one is
cooperating so far.
I had to order some DVD-R disks from Amazon last week,
because I can't find anyone local that sells blank DVD
disks anymore...
Summer is definitely here, it was 102F on the back deck day
before yesterday...more wildfires in the Northern part of
the province, but none around here...oh, guess I shouldn't
have said that, now it will happen.
Thanks Charlie NT5R for the belated happy birthday...that
was June 27, and I hit 71...
The memory is going...we also had the whole family over for
dinner last Monday 10 of us and a dog, squeezed into our tiny
place. Good times! We only get to see our son and his family
about once a year.

Hope all had good holiday, returned Missouri week ago today
Visited friend in Tennessee, non-ham, but he attended hamfest
in Knoxville 20 miles from his home, had a good time.
Then visited brother in Georgia couple weeks, we took short
trip to south Alabama visit other friends, so fun being on
road for while.
Oregon scientific shows high today 96.4 F, reads bit high but
definitely warm day.
Dug some potatoes from community garden, yield about 7 pounds,
now find something to plant for fall garden.
NY Bob, wondering about your weather smoke from Canada? Also
heard some flooding possible in northeast
Listening on 14.105 KHz (40 meter end fed antenna) hearing some
packet and other digital
Daryl, understand about PO Box getting expensive. More secure
and when out of town extended time PO just holds my mail so
convenient also.
Rick BELATED Happy Birthday to you. GL on TS50. Had one years
ago, love the Kenwood quality.
Thank you Daryl and Bob for net. Fun to stay in contact with
you all.
OK Bob, wondering where your new location is? In Tulsa area often.
Attended weather baloon program at Knoxville hamfest. Memphis
releases baloons twice daily. Retrieved weather balloon be
excellent for fox hunt, even on original frequency but even
weather if able to program

Few weeks ago I mentioned weather radiosondes being launched
twice/day a few miles from my new qth. I put together a "mobile"
setup with rpi, gps dongle, sdr dongle and a mag mount ham antenna.
Got a granddaughter to go with me and we tracked one while aloft
until it landed. It went up about 20+ miles and then landed about
20 minute drive from here. We recovered it about 15 minutes after
it landed, with the help of the land owner. I've ordered an adapter
from Adafruit so I can reprogram it from it's original 404.2MHz freq
to a ham frequency and send it up with another balloon. May be a
STEM project with said (4th grade) granddaughter in the fall.
Also came across an AREDN mesh enthusiast in the local club, so
I trying to revive some of my old stuff from 7 years ago. Will
report on that later, but hope we can actually connect a few folks
together. Never got any traction when in Tulsa...
Hope everyone had a great Independence (and Canadian!) Day.
We moved to Norman in April to be close to daughter and her
family. My wife has been developing mobility issues, so the
timing has worked out well.
I agree it is great to chat with you fellas, and appreciate the time
and effort Bob and Daryl put in to make this happen. Thanks guys!

It has been a good week. We finally got a .25 inch of rain
yesterday and it was pretty cool temp wise
It warmed up to 93 on my weather station today.
Starting to get some tomatoes and cucumbers off the raised
beds.
Been playing with pi-Apps on the raspberry pi.
I certainly enjoy the net. Thanks to Daryl and Bob for hosting
it. Hope everyone has a good week.

Hi all, It has been awhile since I have checked in. I kept
forgetting the time and day...Hope all is well.
I just got out of the Hospital; was there almost 2 weeks, a
bad case pneumonia ..On the mend now with IV in my arm, and
3 pills a day. I hope to go back to work in August.
WX the last couple of days has been rain rain rain.
My connection does not seem to be the best for some reason.
Hope to get back into checking in.

Bob (NY) fine business on the docile fans. I recall when I
was in Indianapolis in 1986 for my first National Square
Dance Convention, the locals noted that "the dancers were
more docile than the Indy 500 folks"...probably because we
don't allow alcoholic beverages before or during the dancing.
I don't care for the fireworks, and if the prices of other
things are any indication, they are expensive!! I have
better things to spend money on.
I never did have an interest in GMRS...I'm only on the air
for the nets that I do...rarely checking into other nets.
The dry corneas and arthritis make it too hard to be at the
computer for long periods of time. After I finished the other
net last night, I shut things down, and went to bed, as I
couldn't hold my eyes open. That's why the logs/scribes, etc.
didn't get posted until this morning. But, storms are heading
this way from the west, so I have to finish my work fast. I
hope my lawn guy gets here before they arrive...you can't
mow wet grass!!
Rick, FB on the gear...good luck in getting it working. The
last time I went to Office Depot or Best Buy over a year
ago, you could still get DVD's -- I guess Amazon is the way
to go now. FB on the gathering with your son and his family.
The heat is forecast to be back here later this week. The
fire danger is low right now for all the rain, but that
could change.

Sounds like time for a french fry and baked potato fest

They did have several highway and railroad washouts in
the northeast US...with a HIGH risk of flooding up in
Vermont.
One can only renew the P.O. Box 30 days out, so I'll have
to see how much they want...I might just do it for 6 months,
even though it might cost more in the long run. But, if I
end up being in the hospital for a time, I don't have to
worry about mail piling up here at the house.
Bob (OK), FB on the weather balloon, STEM project, and
ARDEN. I've seen videos on the National Weather Center
there in Norman.
Scott, FB on the weather and starting to get items from
the garden, as well as the RPi doings. I ended up being
late starting the early checkins for that net, but it
ended up being a short one last night.
Dennis, glad to have you back. Sorry to hear about the
health issues...we wish you a speedy recovery. Feel
free to join us when you get a chance.
