N5VLZ:

Sorry I missed the net last week...I had
thunderstorms in the area twice last week;
first on Monday, then Thursday night into
Friday...the latter with tornadoes (there
was a tornado warning in my area, plus a
confirmed tornado in Sheridan to my south
and Stuttgart to my east).

Then, the bottom fell out, temperature wise,
with the Arctic Express plunging the region
below freezing, with snow across north and
central Arkansas, and a wintry mix across
the south Sunday through today. All the roads
are snow and ice covered, and with the state
having been below freezing since Saturday
afternoon, it was no problem for the snow and
sleet to stick. It was a dry powdery snow,
good for sledding...but not for a snowball
fight or making a snowman. We won't warm back
up above freezing until Wednesday, but then
will go back below freezing Friday through
Sunday. There have been some power outages,
and some issues with water and gas lines in
the region, but it would've been far worse
had it been an ice storm, or heavy wet snow.
The average accumulations were between 2 and
5 inches. One area meteorologist had a snow
making machine (Snow At Home), so in his yard,
there was a foot...and the area kids (with his
own) were loving it. Many schools, clinics, etc.
are closed until road conditions improve. At
least today was a federal and state holiday.
I saw a wind chill of -74F in Montana.

I had 2 medical appointments last week; one
with a yearly HMO home health care nurse, and
one with my new PCP (both females). The left
hip surgery incision continues healing very
nicely, but because of the impending winter
storm (noted above), I postponed the next
followup visit with the hip surgeon until
February 1. With the icy roads, etc., I'm
going to stretch the food and medications
for a bit, as I can't get stuff delivered
until the roads clear up. At least my A1C
went down to 5.7...I celebrated with six
chocolate iced donuts and a fruit punch...
maybe I should've gotten a diet soda (hi hi).

I slept in today, as the cold and pressure
changes had me hurting during the night, and
I have a dull headache right now. I have no
plans to go anywhere for awhile. With taking
the Lasix, Flomax, and Potassium twice a day,
frequent trips to "the little hams room" (hi
hi) means I keep the water running, and the
pipes from freezing.

I think the weather is also affecting the
various modes, reflectors, etc. Several
digital net modes were down, including
TGIF, and some reflectors. Groundhog Day
is the midpoint of winter, although I still
say it's like what Bill Murray noted in the
movie of the same name: "A thousand people
freezing their butts off to look at a rodent"
(hi hi). Years ago, a ham radio club in the
area did a special event station there, and
also had "a cardiac breakfast"...with all
the trimmings (we will pause 3 minutes for
drooling (hi hi)), but not so good if you had
a heart condition. I didn't see a Groundhog
Day Special Event Station in the Feb. 2024
issue of QST, which I read online.

GE All!

It was cold here this week. But at least we
didn't get the snow Buffalo got.

I heard TGIF is having problems with their
server provider having lost their cooling.
You'd think this time of year, cooling would
not be a problem, but data centers can get
warm!

Not much else going on here, just watching
football and staying warm!

VA7RBP:

Good evening Daryl and all on the Net.

IT WAS BLOODY COLD!! Currantly it's 3F plus
wind chill.

We had a couple days where we got maybe an
inch of snow. I think the total accumulation
is about 4 inches. We spent the week indoors,
didn't do much grocery shopping until today.

Both Arlene and I are still getting over
colds we picked up at the beginning of the
year. So we've just been taking it easy,
staying warm, watching TV...

I couldn't even do my NOON-TIME NET last
week, had to ask for a volunteer NCS,
fortunately someone was able to fill in.
Starting to feel better. I was able to do
the net yesterday and today.

Getting fewer "you sound like you got the
plague" comments.

I wrote down the temp for Saturday...the
low was -34F

Fortunately, it looks like it should warm
back up to around freezing this week.

KX4AC:

GE All!

Well, back to work with the first full
work-week.

Just kinda getting back into the swing
of things after the Christmas vacation.
Thankfully we get a three day weekend
after that :-) Did not do too much over
the weekend.

It has been cold and rainy. Well, "cold"
for Florida. The rest of you would probably
consider it a heat wave.

Anyway, mostly just puttered around the
apartment, and got some work done on
various electronics projects I keep not
working on.

I need to get up early tomorrow morning
so I can try to be first in line for blood
tests. Nothing serious, just a checkup, but
if I get in line early enough, I don't have
to wait too long.

KF5TVG:

GE Daryl and all on the net!

Made it through the holidays without getting
sick (knock on wood), although daughter and
SIL both came down with covid 2 days before
Christmas. That caused a slippage of the
festivities with them and the kids, but not
a big deal.

For those of you doing hamword, there is a
leader board at https://hambooks.org/hamword
for your perusal. You can see I'm no
competition, since I really suck at it!

We've been very cold out here on the prairie.
Single digits, cloudy with dusting of snow
and wind... always wind...

Replies from N5VLZ:

Bob (NY), I can't understand why anyone would
go to an outdoor event in such brutal cold.
I'm sure several will have to get treatment
for frostbite!!

TGIF was having issues on the QuadNet Array.
I connected via Fusion and the SharkRF OpenSpot
4 Pro, but I may go back to D-Star for my next
net over there.

Rick, there's a lot of flu, bronchitis, and
Covid going around. My cousin in Erie...her
husband and their kids came down with it.
But, she didn't get it...she thinks the
medication she's taking for Parkinson's
disease, kept her from getting it. Glad you
got a substitute net control. It's rare that
I miss doing a net, but the weather won the
argument with me last Monday night.

Carl, that is "cold" for Florida...I was in
Miami when it snowed in 1977. The snowbirds
were furious...and much of the state citrus
crop was wiped out that year. Good luck on
the blood work tomorrow.

Bob (OK), I do good enough with the word
games on my BBS...still have not tried
HamWord. Had some trouble getting RMS
Express (for WL2K) started tonight. As
I told Rick, there's a lot of flu, Covid,
and bronchitis going around. With my likely
being stuck here until February, I should
be OK.
