I am curious what the transmitter power of AO-85 is in either watts or dbm.
Thanks.

Hi Ashhar,

LORA is/uses a proprietary protocol, however, it has already been
reverse-engineered by software defined radio people, so ground stations
could potentially use an SDR instead of a LORA chipset:
https://myriadrf.org/blog/lora-modem-limesdr/

I think that it might be interesting to try EME with an FM-chirp signal
(one optimised for the task ie not LORA) as an alternative to JT65...

The PA was characterized over a range of temperatures and battery
voltages in its final design, in 2013. Unfortunately, those projected
temperatures (-50C to +10C) in the thermal analysis were quite lower
than are actually seen on AO-85. FWIW from my best eyeballing of the
graphs and given the reset 693 uptime 335876 telemetry (05:51 UTC July
4) with an RX temperature of 41.7C and battery voltage of 3.91, I would
guess that the output power could be just under 600 mW.
The output power increases with battery voltage but decreases with
temperature as the efficiency is lower in warmer temperatures.

800 mW is the maximum output we claim for the launch profiles, about 775
mW was the max measured in this characterization at 4.2V and a
temperature of -50C. Given the temperatures we see in orbit (about 10C
to 50C), AO-85 probably ranges from about 700 mW during eclipse when
it's not in a full sun phase (so cooler overall) at 10C and 4.1V, to 550
mW when it's in a full sun phase (warmer overall) at 50C and 3.8V.

All of that is scientifically based on my possibly debatable
extrapolation from the PA characterization data we have on file!

So Paul and John are both right in theory.

Hi all-

Will be on SO50 from the EM59/EM69 grid line today at the following times UTC:

1647z July 4 (11:47am Central)
0117z July 5 (8:17pm Central Tonight)

I have easy access to EN50/EN60/EM59/EM69 through Friday evening, SO50 only.
While these aren't terribly rare grids, I'd be happy to work with you to get
you a contact with one of these grids while I'm here. Email me and let me
know. Follow my Twitter feed (@xxxxxxxxxxx for latest operating info.

Hope to work you if you need the grids.

Happy July 4th!? I hope everybody is enjoying a wonderful day enjoying
festivities, friedships and fireworks.
Someone is going to owe me a couple of big steaks and a few cases of decent
beer after this adventure!! I have had multiple requests to make it to FK09
and I managed to secure a ride to the EK99/FK09 line here on Little Cayman
for the next two nights. I am returning to Grand Cayman on Thursday the 6th
at noon time.

Assuming no issues with the equipment, (it is very hot and very humid here)
and assuming the mosquitoes stay away after some heavy DEET action, I plan
to get on the following passes this evening and tomorrow evening:
SO-50:?? 0123Z to 0135Z? July 5thFO-29:?? 0203Z to 0222Z? July 5th
I know Sean KX9X/9 will in on SO-50 at the same time. I will defer the early
part of the pass to him.
Tomorrow:
SO-50:?? 0148Z to 0201Z? July 6thFO-29:?? 0253Z to 0313Z? July 6th
I anticipate SO-50 will be tough. Please, please make sure you can work full
duplex if possible. The last time I operated from FK09 many years ago it was
mayhem on SO-50 and few stations managed to get through.?? I had a great
couple of passes on FO-29 from Grand Cayman a few days ago and I really
appreciated the very orderly contacts during that pass. I hope we can do the
same again this time.
Please note I will be signing as ZF2AE/ZF8 from Little Cayman. When
uploading to LOTW please use this call. Thank you!

Hi!

It looks like Tanyusha 1 was activated on schedule today, as I heard
it on 145.800 MHz as the ISS passed over the western USA around 1918
UTC today. This was a very high pass over central Arizona, maximum
elevation of 62 degrees. As I tried (unsuccessfully) to work stations
on the 145.825 MHz packet digipeater with my TH-D74, I used the audio
recording function on the HT to capture the signals on 145.800 MHz.
My recording would momentarily cut out whenever the HT transmitted,
but I only missed the identification before one of the 3 messages I
heard.

According to the ARISS press release from last week, Tanyusha 1
transmits messages in Russian, English, Spanish, and Chinese. I copied
3 of those 4 messages, missing only the Spanish message. Before each
message played, the satellite would identify itself in English, "Romeo
Sierra Six Sierra".

I have posted links to the recordings I made in a post on the QRZ
satellite forum earlier this afternoon. That post can be found at:

https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/tanyusha-1-rs6s-and-tanyusha
-2-rs7s.572691/

The MP3 files with each of the messages, the RS6S identification, and
the WAV file from my TH-D74 can also be found in my Dropbox space at:

http://dropbox.wd9ewk.net/

(look in folder "20170704-ISS_on_145.800_MHz")

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get much from the other satellite
once it is activated, since pass times aren't very convenient for my
work schedule later this week. It would be nice to get the Spanish
message, to go with the other 3 I copied earlier today.

73!

Folks-

Upon reflection, I will sit out tonight's pass and return to the EM59/69
line Thursday. Please devote your energies to working Adrian ZF2AE/ZF8 on
his rare grid line op.

This afternoons pass for me was at a high elevation and all 4 languages
heard very clear with a good strong signal.
