Good evening bird folks,

We are approaching the end of ops from the Faroe Islands. I have been able
to work a number of passes from the IP61/62 line near where we are staying.
Unfortunately, the horizon only lets me work to about 4-7? depending on the
direction (in somewhat of a valley). The good part is that this is actually
very good for the topography of the Faroes. I do not have any way to get to
a better horizon from base, so that's about the best I can do (hey, at
least it's a grid line). Tonight (7/13 UTC) I will be on the FO-29 passes
towards North America at 0127Z and 0310Z. Planning a fixed transmit of
145.940 and going down in case of QRM. I'll see about getting on some FM
passes for Europe today as well, and FO-29 tomorrow evening.

On Friday we head out in the morning and go to Greenland GP49. I will be on
many passes from here and expect nothing less than a perfect horizon to the
west. All of North America should be in easy reach. There are SO-50 passes
where I'll be able to work Texas and Ukraine in the same pass. I will try
to make my way over to GP39 at some point for a day trip, but not
guaranteed. As with the rest of the trip, FO-29 is the primary focus since
it is near apogee.

While I don't exactly plan to be QRV from Iceland again, I will be passing
through again twice on flight connections. My connection in HP94 on Friday
is about three hours and on the way back to New York it is about five hours
near HP83/84. For the stragglers, I may be able to pull something off by
super special request. Otherwise, the last portion of this trip will be
FN30 and EM90 with a jaunt down the EL9x line to Miami, before returning to
Oklahoma City.

Just for future information, I (sort of accidentally) solved my
problem! While setting up for field day a couple weeks ago, I checked
my antenna (an Alaskan arrow, using only the bottom 2 sections) - and
was surprised to notice it was around a 2.2:1 SWR on 435MHz. I thought
I remembered it being better than that, but I guess not. I set up the
full-length antenna for Field Day, and operated using a borrowed
IC-910 (just in case my radio had the problem again.) In the full
length configuration, the alaskan arrow is a 1.1:1 match on 435MHz.

A few days after field day while I was putting away my equipment,
something dawned on me - I have never had a problem with the 821 while
using the antenna in its full length configuration. I don't use it
that way very often, primarily for very low (sub 2?) passes of AO-7
and FO-29.

You can probably see where this is going....My theory was that the
high(ish) SWR was causing some RFI problems internally in the radio.
RF going where it's not supposed to be, on the coax shield etc. I
would think that it shouldn't be a problem for the radio to cope with
a 2:1 mismatch...but the only way to find out was test the theory.

I put 2 wattmeters inline, one each on the 2m and 70cm feedlines.
Transmitting at ~25w on 435mhz, I was seeing around 2.5-3w coming back
towards the radio on my 2m feedline. Figuring that probably wasn't a
good thing, I borrowed a normal arrow II antenna - checked with the
same meter, a 1:1 match on both 435 and 145. Virtually zero reflected
power in the same test. I have been using that antenna for two weeks
now, and haven't had a single problem with the radio.

So, moral of this story is, check the obvious! Even if you think
something is fine, or you think you remember checking it before - make
sure. I had literally checked everything else on the radio, except the
antenna. And for those of you using the Alaskan arrow, it might be
work checking out if it is working as optimally as you think it is. To
be honest, I have yet to find a situation where I could make a QSO
with the alaskan and not with a regular arrow. I will be keeping the
alaskan, probably to use as a base station antenna once I get a mast
and rotor put up at my QTH. But from now on, I'll be sticking with the
regular arrow for my day-to-day ops.

That's the end of my novel.....just thought this might come in useful
for somebody else down the road :-)

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with
participants at ISS R&D conference, Washington, D.C. on 20 July. The event
is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:23 UTC. It is recommended that you
start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time. The duration of
the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a
telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the
west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the
145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.





This ARISS contact will be conducted with Youth in Aviation Program students
from the East Coast Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (ECCTAI) attending the
ISS Research and Development conference as part of the conference's STEM
day.  ECCTAI is one of the largest Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. chapters in United
States and serves the Washington DC area.  ECCTAI is dedicated to keeping
alive the history, achievements, and importance of the original Tuskegee
Airmen.  The term, "Tuskegee Airmen," refers to the men and women, who were
involved in the so-called "Tuskegee Experience", the World War II Army Air
Corps program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat
aircraft.  ECCTAI strives to increase understanding of the "Tuskegee
Experience" by honoring the accomplishments and perpetuating the history of
the men and women who participated in the "Tuskegee Experience" and to
introduce young people to the world of aviation and space through its Youth
in Aviation Program (YIAP).  YIAP motiva
 tes and inspires America's youth to strive for similar excellence of these
earlier pioneers, exposing them to aviation and space careers (Level I),
attending FAA ground school (Level II) and receiving aircraft flight
instruction or interning at an FAA certified A&P (Airframe and Powerplant)

Hi John.

I have looked for it on favorable passes, but so far no luck.  However, all
my opportunities have been at night, so if the satellite performs better in
sunlight, I'm at a disadvantage.

Could you confirm that we're talking about 436.670 FM with 9k6 FSK?

A quick question on using SatPC32 to control HDSDR.  I have a FCDP+ and can
control it via CAT via virtual Serial Port Emulator software.  I seem to
have some success using the Kenwood TS 2000 settings for Rig for this
software/device.  Problem is that when I select a Doppler.SQF line in the
CAT dialog, HDSDR changes to the wrong SSB mode.  I have to manually change
it to USB on HDSDR.  FM works fine, but SSB modes start out wrong.  Is there
a better radio emulation to use than the TS 2000?

Also, If I want to use the HDSDR/FCDP+ as the RX and my FT847 as TX, which
radio should best be radio 1 and which should be 2?

All,

Last Saturday evening, I worked SO50 and heard a young lady calling
out trying to make a QSO.  Nobody was responding to her call, so I
decided that I needed to respond.  I was barely able to make the
QSO successfully due to trees and buildings getting in the way.

On Monday, I received the email below that was sent by her father,
Tom W4SDR.  He set up a Google photo page and video of his daughter
Audrey's KM4BUN first satellite QSO.  The video and pictures are very
cool!  Tom W4SDR, gave me permission to share the link below. The
entire family have amateur radio licenses, which is impressive in
itself.

It felt good to be able to provide a positive experience for these
kids.  Just goes to show you that any radio activity can be an
opportunity for doing some good for someone else.  If you hear
Audrey KM4BUN or her brother Jack KM4ZIA, please try to give them
a QSO.  They are certain interested in setting up a sked.  They are
two smart kids that are enthusiastic about amateur radio and working
the satellites!

Hi folks,

I was asked this on our club's weekly net last week.  I expect the
answer is no, but thought I should check...

Will any of the ham satellites be affected by next month's solar eclipse
across the USA?  To be affected, the satellite's track (at some 18,000
mph) would need to intersect some portion of the eclipse (not
necessarily the path of totality), which I understand is moving at some
1,500 mph.  Given the speeds involved, that's unlikely.  But we've got a
number of satellites in sun synchronous orbits, so it's not impossible.

Any way to predict this?

If there are any, the telemetry from the event would be an awesome bit
of data for students' analysis.

p.s.  I remember being at work (I think in the 1990's) during an
eclipse.  As I recall, the spot of totality was out in the Pacific
Ocean, off the coast of Mexico.  The real-time satellite weather
background on my Unix workstation looked like someone had burned a hole
in it with a cigarette.

Thanks Koos.

The resampling errors might explain why I've sometimes gotten better
decodes live than after I play it back through the recorder.

I'll add that to the web page, and the qsstv recommendation as well.

I have available a spare 16 turn RHCP 1.2Ghz helix for sale. Aluminum
reflector, stainless steel support, UV protected PVC supports, It was a
spare I was going to use on AO-40 (sobsob). It is home brew and about 80%
complete. I can finish it up in a few hours if anyone is interested in it. I
can provided pictures and details. I have built about 10 of these back in
the day of HEO.

Its been 4 years.

K2BSA's going back to Summit Bechtel for the 2017 National Scouting
Jamboree in Beckley WV, we arrive this weekend to begin building the
station.? ? Help us show off Amateur Radio to the many (25,000) scouts at
the Jamboree.? We'll be on the FM and linear satellites.

I appreciated K8YSE's synopsis from 2013 so much I thought I'd share it
again.

board.? It looks like blanket permission since in "Exemptions and Other
Considerations" it states "Permitted to be used on board"



Since the ship is registered in Panama all I need to do is contact the ARRL
for my IARP Permit.? Has anyone had a problem taking an Elk or Arrow antenna
on a plane or will it have to go in the belly (extra $25)? (broke down, not
together)

We AMSAT cruised,? we were constantly being questioned by security folks,
especially where we were out at night on deck and aiming our arrows at the
sky.? It just took persistence and MANY contacts were made by several
people.

I'll be roving to FN12 & FN22 tomorrow 7/12 from late

FO29, SO50 & XW2 Birds. On the linear SATs, you should
hear me somewhat up the bandpass. On SO50, I'm hoping
I'll able to finish a QSO or two (!). I may be able to
get down to FN11/21 the next morning, but not for sure.

running with your equipment in 5 minutes.

section and live sstv capture worldwide.

I highly recommend recording the audio.

That way if you have issues decoding during TX you can always replay to the
decoder later. Also you can try different decoders and settings to see
which produces the best image.

Two items for that page:

1: when recording, try to set the sample rate in the recording software to
the same number sample rate as used by the sstv software. This avoids
resampling errors.

2: qsstv for linux works fine for decoding ISS images.

AO-85 is included in the AMSAT Keps, nasa.all and nasabare.txt.? Make
certain the Group uses one or the other.

That having been said, at this moment, I am not able to reach any of the

I have no problems selecting it from the list of satellites in the Keps.
Be sure you are using AO-85 (the name has to be exact including the
hyphen) and be sure your SQF files match as well.

 This has been discussed many times in the past. You need to get your keps
from AMSAT in order to have AO-85 listed because it was part of a military
launch. You need to add the following line to your source list.

The SatPC32 manual is a wealth of information and it explains how to add
sources to your list.
