to All, this is to confirm my status report on the website, (in case you
think it was a mistake)

on July 27 2017, at about 0047UTC I could hear my downlink, although
intermittently, during a pass of CAS-4A (using the published
frequencies). The downlink had good audio (loud and clear), and I could
only hear a few words of my transmission at a time. I was able to
sustain for only a portion of the pass. Using 5Watts into a M2 16 el
cross element circular beam. (436CP16). This pass did NOT coincide with
any of the XW sats.

Had hopes of monitoring some voice transponder activity on a high pass of
CAS-4A this evening, but nothing heard.

The telemetry data stream and CW beacon were strong as ever, but nothing
around the transponder downlink.

Image of SDR waterfall:

Question: in a case like this where the status of a transponder is unknown
and no activity is heard, absent any SSB gear would it be bad to transmit
an FM signal on the uplink just to see if the transponder is in fact
active? I would never use FM if there was activity, but could an FM
transmission cause any harm just to possibly determine the status of a
transponder?

Thanks!

An FM signal with no modulation is theoretically just a carrier, no
different from CW. So it wouldn't really be a problem to send a couple of
quick transmissions to test it out.

FM signals won't harm a transponder, but they will cause a lot of problems
for others trying to use the transponder.

Just make sure to ID at the end of your transmission. You can do this
by using your PTT as a key.

Hi everyone.

Today I was included on an email from Alessio, IU5CRE, who is part of the
D-SAT project team. (https://www.dsat.space/radiohams)

Previously, it appears that the majority of the transmissions from D-SAT
occurred when the satellite was over Europe.

Alessio indicated in today's email that commands have been uploaded to D-SAT
that may result in transmissions tonight over the U.S. around the UHF
downlink of 437.505. He specifically mentioned 437.503 & 437.509.

First, here are the approximate UTC times when D-SAT will be over parts of
the U.S. tonight (UTC date: 28-July-2017):

East - 0152 utc
Central - 0326 utc
West - 0500 utc

If D-SAT is not in your tracking software, here is a web-based tracking site:

http://www.n2yo.com/satellite/?s=42794#results

And as always, there is good info on the DK3WN site at:

http://www.dk3wn.info/p/?page_id=29535

-and-

http://www.dk3wn.info/p/?cat=439

So I don't know what, if any, data we might see tonight but since this could
be a limited opportunity on this side of the world, I wanted to share what I
knew with anyone on this mailing list that shares my interest in cubesat
telemetry.

If you are interested in the tlm frames, we have over 5,000 frames in
db.satnogs.org for inflatesail so far:

You can create an account for access to download the frames. (live
dashboards will be coming soon.. that's our next step)

The reflector system of Mayak has not been deployed (yet).

The Mayak team has been remarkably quiet since the launch of the satellite.
They have not published any information at all on the status of Mayak after
launch. After creating such a crazy media hype, you would expect them to
publish further updates on the progress of their project.

If they eventually manage to deploy the reflector, then each of the four
sides
of that tetrahedral reflector has an area of only 4 square meters,
comparable
to many large satellites and rocket stages. Although the reflector
material is
more reflective, you should only expect flares/flashes similar to the famous
Iridium flares, maybe slightly brighter.

Note that it is not at all certain that Mayak is object 42830. That was only
tentatively suggested on the Heavens Above site. But it has not been
confirmed
by any other source.

Nico PA0DLO
