We will be putting in a new UHF ground station in Fairbanks next week
and would appreciate any suggestions as to what sats to listen for when
testing the downlink capability. 435 - 437 or 450 downlinks. They need
to be polar-ish, Fairbanks is 64.8N.

I see there are recent entries on ariss.net indicating packets digipeated
via the ISS.

Anyone have information on the status of that asset?

I have a good pass later tonight and will certainly give it a try.

Thanks!

Scott, it's been sporadic the last day or so. I'm going to attempt the
00:52z pass myself, see if I can get in.

They tried to use the Ericsson for an ARISS contact in the UK today so they
could also use HamTV in Columbus module. Ericsson had issues and they had
to switch to Kenwood in Service Module. I guess something in the process of
that got it working again.

Not actually doing 9600 baud packet myself, but the data connectors on the
back use pin 1 for 1200/9600 data in, pin 2 is ground, pin 3 PTT, pin 4 9600
data out, pin 5 1200 data out, and pin 6 SQL status (LOW when open, 8V when
closed).

Terry -

I read this Rocket Lab "post-flight analysis" of the Electron launcher
earlier today.
https://www.rocketlabusa.com/latest/rocket-lab-completes-post-flight-analysis/

As I came to analysis section about the handling of flight telemetry (not
turning ON the Forward Error Correction (FEC) before launch), I had an
AMSAT-NA moment.

I remembered Phil Karn, KA9Q at the annual AMSAT-NA Conferences in 1990s ...
pushing that Forward Error Correction (FEC) to be included in future
telemetry designs.
The general reception, 20+ years ago was mixed (Why change?), but AO-40 saw
its usage.
http://www.ka9q.net/ao40/

So after 20 to 25 years ... Rocket Labs has shown that the "human component"
continues to exhibit unacceptable failure rates.

Issuing duplicate ballots to everyone who claims to have not received their
first ballot is another good way to cause irregularities in the vote. The
ballot comes as an enclosure inside a first class letter with candidate
biographies and registration material for the symposium, it is not sent to you
as a postcard. I have rarely if ever had a first class letter go missing,
whatever you think of our government postal system, they do deliver the mail
99.99% of the time. (And the private UPS company lost one of our boxes of
symposium proceedings last year, which is why some of you did not get your
proceedings book in a timely manner on board the ship.)

Call Martha and see if your membership is current.....

Yes indeed. The radio is very configurable.

I really like mine. Thinking about adding the 1.2 gig module.

Gentlemen,
I'm pretty new to sats and very surprised there aren't any CW QSOs. Why? ?CW
is much easier to track than SSB w Doppler.

I heard a couple of nice CW qsos on fo29 just now...they're out there, but
not a huge amount of activity. CW gets a bad rap because of a few
inconsiderate operators who run WAY too much power. The on/off nature of a
cw signal combined with more than a few watts output is very hard on the
satellites AGC system, and can make it difficult for other operators to use
the transponder. Many people use cw to compensate for poor receive
performance at their stations, "pumping" the birds receive AGC with high
power and making it generally miserable for all the other operators.

That said, I've made at least one cw qso on fo29, and heard quite a few
others that weren't abusing the transponder. When the power is kept down low
(I would say maybe 3w or less, depending on the elevation of the bird during
the pass) it can work well. No chirp, no hitting the AGC hard, just a good
clean downlink signal.

Take a listen around some evening passes, you might hear more than you'd
think!
