Hi Philip,

I'm in Illinois so can't help personally with appearances in North
Carolina. There are some additional resources on the AMSAT web which might
help with demonstrations.

https://www.amsat.org/station-and-operating-hints/

I had the Fedex/Kinkos shop in town print copies of the Fox-1 Operating
Guide for a club presentation. I referred the audience to this page so they
could print copies at home if any of the other documents interested them.

We had technical issues on the practice run tonight. Will be switching to a
simpler setup for Tuesday. It will work.

See you on the bird.

All,

Weather permitting, please be looking for K2BSA/5 on SO-50 Tuesday evening,
September 5, 7:11P CDT (9/6 0011Z) as we demonstrate amateur radio
satellite communications to a Scout troop in the DFW Metroplex, EM12.
Control operator for the pass will be Eagle Scout Alexander Pritchard,
KG5GKQ. Please look out for the K2BSA/5 call and give us a shout and maybe
stoke some excitement to these young people. This is a 60+ degree pass to
the east so almost all of the US should be in the footprint.

Since Alexander has never actually done the satellite thing with himself as
the lead, we are going to do a practice run tonight 9/4 on a 6:45P (2345Z)
SO-50 pass and I will have him use his own call on this one, KG5GKQ. Be
patient with the guy as he will be nervous I am sure. This is a lower
elevation for us, 22 degrees to the east so the QRM might be heavy. We will
be running a little power, probably 25 watts which should help.

Look for us on the air for these two passes and give a shout to the
respective calls. Alexander and the Scouts present will appreciate it.

Also, If you know people who have this equipment and might be able to

Captain Kirk, William Shatner, gave the command to send the 40th anniversary
message to Voyager 1 from NASA's control center. The message was submitted
by Oliver Jenkins and chosen by a committee. The message consisted of 448
bits of info, transmitted by the 70 meter dish in Madrid Spain. It took 28
seconds to sent at a rate of 16 bits/second. It will travel 12.9 billion
miles to reach Voyager's position in interstellar space. It will take 19.25
hours, traveling at the speed of light to reach Voyager 1. The message is:
"We offer friendship across the stars. You are not alone". The message was
transmitted at 17:20:01 UTC, 1:20:01 PM EDT.

A bit OT, but a question comes to mind:

Oregon is currently under a Huge Smoke Cloud from forest fires.(pretty much
the entire State). Here is So Oregon, visibility is 1/2 mile and ceiling at
the airport is 2200. Ash particulate is falling and visible to the eye.

Do these conditions impact satellite contacts, LEO or otherwise?

Last operating trip to OA land, I had the pleasure of assisting the
Radio Club Peruano in rehabbing their satellite station.

The only bittersweet pill taking these strange trips is that the
chances of working someone there, myself, from home, is almost nil.
Leaving a working station was my way of hoping someone would use it.

OA4/XQ3SA has been active from the club station in FH17. It still
works, four years after rehab.

The smoke particles are much smaller than the VHF/UHF wavelengths we use on
most satellites; so the smoke shouldn't be a problem.

After about a year and a half on the LEOs, I'm close to Satellite WAS, but
still need Delaware. Wondering if anyone on the list knows of a
satellite-active ham in that state?

KC3FQF has been active on many passes the last few weeks, I worked him a
couple times Sunday evening on a mid-US overhead SO50 and FO29. He uploads
quickly to LOTW. Prior to that I'd only ever heard a QSL card only op from
Delaware.

Gabe and Matt,

Looking in my log, I see that I noted the call sign but missed
the grid square. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep my ears open.
