I had trouble initially at 20ish watts to my 8 element 2/3 Alaskan
Arrow, but that was due to some other stations using too much power on
the satellite. Like the XW-2s (and I'm guessing the hardware is nearly
identical). the AGC range is quite tight.

Nice to work Clayton for my first QSO on each of the two satellites!

It's nice to have these two satellites added to our ever growing list
of satellites for two-way communications. 14 linear transponders, 3
digital satellites, and 2 FM satellites are now regularly available
for amateur radio use. More satellites = more opportunities for fun.

And don't forget, we're T-3 weeks from adding another FM satellite to
our roster!

Paul, N8HM

Transponder looks cleaner than the other XW sats, no beats or pulse signals
noticed so far. QSOs on CAS 4A and CAS 4B this afternoon with PU2RAS, LU2DPW

I was able to hear my voice through CAS-4A and 4B transponders tonight
under one degree of elevation using ~5 watts into 10' of LMR-240uf and
a 4 element 70cm / 2 element 2m "Short Arrow" yagi. Very easy
satellite to work with minimal power.

Was able to work KB6LTY on both satellites. Very strong and clean signal.
Heard myself to 1? (mountains prevent lower elevations), with the edge of
the footprint close to Newfoundland, Canada.

Glad we have two more satellites to play with!

International Space Station Astronauts are Calling CQ Students ?
ARISS-US program education proposal deadline is November 15, 2017

September 18, 2017: The Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station (ARISS) program is seeking proposals from U.S. schools,
museums, science centers and community youth organizations to host
radio contacts with an orbiting crew member aboard the International
Space Station (ISS) between July 1 and December 31, 2018.

Each year, ARISS provides tens of thousands of students with oppor-
tunities to learn about space technologies and space communications
through the exploration of Amateur Radio. The program provides
learning opportunities by connecting students to astronauts aboard
the International Space Station (ISS) through a partnership between
NASA, the American Radio Relay League, the Radio Amateur Satellite
Corporation and other Amateur Radio organizations and worldwide
space agencies. The program?s goal is to inspire students worldwide,
to pursue interests and careers in science, technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM) through Amateur Radio.

Educators overwhelmingly report that student participation in the
ARISS program inspires an interest in STEM subjects and in STEM
careers. Ninety-two percent of educators who have participated in
the program have indicated that ARISS provided ideas for encourag-
ing student exploration, discussion, and participation, and 78
percent said that ARISS was effective in stimulating student
interest in STEM.

ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers
of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed
education plan. Students can learn about satellite communications,
wireless technology, science research conducted on the space
station, what it is like to work in space, radio science, and any
related STEM subject. Students learn to use Amateur Radio to talk
directly to an astronaut and ask their STEM-related questions.
ARISS will help educational organizations locate Amateur Radio
groups who can assist with equipment for this once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for students.

The proposal deadline for 2018 contacts is November 15, 2017.

The ARISS website has additional details on expectations, proposal
guidelines, and the proposal form. See:
http://www.ariss.org/hosting-an-ariss-contact-in-the-us.html

Hi All,

It's not just the US that will be QRV on sats for JOTA - I know of at least
two UK stations - GB2GP (Gilwell Park, home of Scouting) and GB4WS
(Wiltshire Scouts, a county-wide event for approx. 100 or so young people) -
who will be trying to get some contacts in too.

My hope is that the amsat side of things will add an extra 'wow factor' to
it, so anyone that happens to share a footprint with Southern or
South-Eastern England, please do look out for us and give us a call!

Chances are the majority of the time we'll be looking at SSB/FM voice
contacts, especially at GB4WS, as we know we get a lot of people who haven't
ever done anything with radio before, and voice is easily understandable
whereas CW is much harder for those who don't already know it to understand.
We might do the odd demo using skimmer to decode though. We'll also be
likely to try some packet decodes, and the funcube data.

Look forward to working as many of you as are in range!

73, and a firm left handshake,
John (XLX)

These should be popular sats. The inclination is 43 degrees so they will
come over central USA latitudes seven times a day each. We just need more
people using them with SSB radios.
Just monitor 145.87 and 145.925 SSB.

Transponder looks cleaner than the other XW sats, no beats or pulse signals
noticed so far. QSOs on CAS 4A and CAS 4B this afternoon with PU2RAS, LU2DPW
and LU2FGL.

I was able to hear my voice through CAS-4A and 4B transponders tonight under
one degree of elevation using ~5 watts into 10' of LMR-240uf and a 4 element
70cm / 2 element 2m "Short Arrow" yagi. Very easy satellite to work with
minimal power.
