Only three weeks remain until the next AMSAT Fox-1 satellite launches!

RadFxSat (Fox-1B) is scheduled for launch at 01:47 PST (09:47 UTC) on
November 10, 2017. RadFxSat is one of four CubeSats making up the NASA
ELaNa XIV mission, riding as secondary payloads aboard the Joint Polar
Satellite System (JPSS)-1 mission. JPSS-1 will launch on a Delta II
from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

RadFxSat is a partnership with Vanderbilt University ISDE and hosts
four payloads for the study of radiation effects on commercial off the
shelf components. RadFxSat features the Fox-1 style FM U/v repeater
with an uplink on 435.250 MHz (67.0 Hz CTCSS) and a downlink on
145.960 MHz. Satellite and experiment telemetry will be downlinked via
the ?DUV? subaudible telemetry stream and can be decoded with the
FoxTelem software.

All:

Is there a way to monitor the commands Wisp sends to a TNC during
startup? I searched the Wisp directories and couldn't find anything.

A utility program that monitors commands being sent to the TNC would be
helpful. Thought of using a simple terminal program along with a comport
splitter of some kind, but not sure if that would work.

Perhaps there's a list of Wisp TNC commands for different TNC's
somewhere on the web.

Thanks,

Tony -K2MO

Has anyone successfully requested directory fill from Falconsat-3 using
Windows 64-bits? It seems that WISP sends a corrupt request to the
satellite on Windows 64-bits. I have tried running WISP on two different
machines. Both with Windows 64-bits -- one running Windows 7 64-bits and
the other running Windows 10 64-bits. On both, every time MSPE requests a
directory fill, I get a "NO -5 PY2SDR" response from the satellite. Roland
PY4ZBZ tried on his 32-bits Windows 10 system and the satellite replies
with a OK.

Comparing the directory fill request packet sent to the satellite by my
station and Roland's, it seems that, on my station, WISP is corrupting the
directory hole pair data and also introducing one more byte to the request.

This is PY4ZBZ (good) request:

10 F4 00 42 8F E5 59 FF FF FF 7F 0D 0A

This is PY2SDR (bad) request:

10 F4 00 BF 12 E0 59 FF FF FF FF FF FF 7F

I'll be demoing sats to a JOTA group in Apex, North Carolina at least
starting with the 2017-10-21 1710 UTC AO-85 pass. They will be using
special event callsign K4C but I may use my own to make LoTW uploads
easier.

Thank you to everyone that has contacted me privately.

Last night I installed Windows 7 32-bits and WISP on a virtual machine and
to my surprise, the problem I have been having persisted. After a lot of
hair pulling (not much left anyway) and investigation, I found that the
culprit was neither Windows nor WISP. It was the serial to TCP bridge HW
VSP software. If the NVT option of HW VSP is enabled, it inserts some
control data in the data stream when it finds some pattern on the input
data stream. In the case of a dir fill, it was introducing three 0xFF bytes
right in middle of the KISS frame. This was being sent over AX.25 to
Falconsat-3 and was the cause of the "NO -5" error.

I've tested requesting a dir fill during the last pass here and Falconsat-3
replied with a nice "OK PY2SDR"! Now let's grab some headers and try to
upload a small file.

Thank you so much for chasing this down!

Last night was my first attempt to use WiSP with a transmit-enabled radio
setup and I also got the "NO -5" errors. But not fully understanding WiSP,
I did not know what that might be about.

I have un-checked the "NVT Enabled" option and will look forward to trying
again on the next pass!

Edson,

Congratulations on receiving a confirmation on the WISP BB!

I would like to abandon my hardware TNC and use your successful approach.
Can you let me know what SoundModem software your using as KISS TNC and what
interface are you using to key the transmitter. I have WISP, HS Soundmodem
and HW VSP installed. I'm using an IC-910, thank you for your help.

I was curious about the status of EO-79 as the transponder has not been
reported on in quite some time. AI6GS checked a pass this afternoon and
heard nothing but the beacon.

As the transponder's operation causes the satellite to be power negative,
the satellite is currently configured to charge for 27 minutes after coming
out of eclipse and then the transponder is on for 25 minutes. When this
schedule was put in place last year, this favored mid-latitudes, but due to
orbital precession and the changing seasons, this is now seems to favor
lower latitudes.

If anyone wants to check out the transponder today (21-Oct), I have
calculated the following on times (by utilizing eclipse predictions in
DK3WN's Illum).

0117 - 0132
0253 - 0318
0430 - 0455
0607 - 0632
0744 - 0809
0919 - 0944
1057 - 1122
1234 - 1259
1411 - 1436
1548 - 1613

These are very good and strong transponders and I highly encourage people
to get on and try them out. At 0128 this evening, I worked PV8DX on CAS-4A.
The satellite was at about 1.8 degrees for him and around 4 degrees for me.

On the subsequent CAS-4B pass, a 9.5 degree max pass, I heard the beacon
right as my phone said the satellite rose above the horizon and heard my
own signal a couple of seconds after that. I worked KB4TOA on that pass and
a couple of minutes later worked AI6GS who had just 2 degrees and was
beaming through trees with 5 watts on his FT-817.

Just over midway through the pass, I cycled through power settings and
observed no noticeable difference between uplinking with my power output at
maximum (about 22 watts) and my power at minimum (about 3 watts). Since low
ERP levels appear to activate the transponder's AGC circuits, it seems
especially critical on these satellites that all users use minimum power to
keep the rest of the passband available to all.
