International Space Station Astronauts are Calling CQ Students ?
ARISS-US program education proposal deadline is November 15, 2017

September 18, 2017: The Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station (ARISS) program is seeking proposals from U.S. schools,
museums, science centers and community youth organizations to host
radio contacts with an orbiting crew member aboard the International
Space Station (ISS) between July 1 and December 31, 2018.

Each year, ARISS provides tens of thousands of students with oppor-
tunities to learn about space technologies and space communications
through the exploration of Amateur Radio. The program provides
learning opportunities by connecting students to astronauts aboard
the International Space Station (ISS) through a partnership between
NASA, the American Radio Relay League, the Radio Amateur Satellite
Corporation and other Amateur Radio organizations and worldwide
space agencies. The program?s goal is to inspire students worldwide,
to pursue interests and careers in science, technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM) through Amateur Radio.

Educators overwhelmingly report that student participation in the
ARISS program inspires an interest in STEM subjects and in STEM
careers. Ninety-two percent of educators who have participated in
the program have indicated that ARISS provided ideas for encourag-
ing student exploration, discussion, and participation, and 78
percent said that ARISS was effective in stimulating student
interest in STEM.

ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers
of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed
education plan. Students can learn about satellite communications,
wireless technology, science research conducted on the space
station, what it is like to work in space, radio science, and any
related STEM subject. Students learn to use Amateur Radio to talk
directly to an astronaut and ask their STEM-related questions.
ARISS will help educational organizations locate Amateur Radio
groups who can assist with equipment for this once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for students.

The proposal deadline for 2018 contacts is November 15, 2017.

The ARISS website has additional details on expectations, proposal
guidelines, and the proposal form. See:

Joe,
the RTS pins of the Radio 1 and Radio 2 COM ports can be (permanently)
set high or low? (menu "Rotor Setup"). I added that option several years
ago to have a source for feeding CAT interfaces. Also, the RTS pin of
the? Radio 1 COM port must be set high if the radio is a TS-2000. This
became necessary when I replaced (with V. 12.8c) the old MSComm32
component (which supports? only 16? port numbers) by a newer one that
can handle more ports.

The DTR pins of? the Radio 1 and Radio 2 COM ports can also feed
interfaces.? The Radio 2 DTR pin can alternatively (menu "Options") be
used to automatically steer an antenna switch? (or cross switch for 2
antennas and 2 radios) when the user switches between uv and vu sats or
vice versa.? The feature requires different uplink/downlink patterns but
doesn't work on the base of a particular satellite name (but see below).

The program's "Priority" feature can be used to automatically switch the
program to a particular satellite when it rises. The antenna could then
be switched manually (not too much work, I think).

Provided you run 2 radios (to activate the Radio 2 functions) you could
theoretically have a group that contains your particular satellite and
only others with a reverse uplink/downlink pattern. Then the program
could automatically switch to your? satellite when it rises and also
switch the antennas. (I hope, hi, I didn't test that) .

Hi to all.

A group of Cuban ham are excited about listening what he thinks was a
ISS pass and locals are asking to me to write an article for our
national web site; the news spread on 2m local repeater during the pass
and a few hams managed to listen a few seconds after the LOS, that rise
a lot of comments and interest...

The pass was on October 31 around 1 to 2 pm in CO land (CDT) on 145.800,
does any has any details of that? or better a recording of the pass?

My pass predictions shows a good pass over Cuba but later on that day,
not at this time... I was on a work meeting and don't heard it.

Thanks in advance...

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with
participants at Liceo Scientifico 'Francesco Cecioni", Livorno, Italy and
Liceo Artistico Melotti, Lomazzo, Italy on 3 Nov. The event is scheduled to
begin at approximately 09:27 UTC. The duration of the contact is
approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between
IR0ISS and IQ5LI. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent
areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz
downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian.

The liceo scientifico "Francesco Cecioni" in Livorno is a high school with
about 1200 students. The school was born in 1972 as a subsidiary but in 1974
already got its own identity for the experimental and innovative methods
introduced as response to the demanding instruction innovation. Since 2010
the school has four specializations: scientific, linguistic, artistic and
humanistic; the half of the students follow the scientific specialization.
From the '80s, Liceo Cecioni sent its representatives to the final rounds of
the national competition in math and physics. At present, astrophysics is
the topic of the "Astrolab" program, reserved for the best students of the
school and organized in collaboration with a network that includes: TNG at
Las Palmas (Canary), Pisa and Pavia University, Arcetri Observatory
(Florence) and S.Marcello Pistoiese Observatory (Pistoia). The deep
involvement in the "Zero Robotics" competition has increased the interest of
the students in the space research.

Liceo Artistico "Melotti" in Lomazzo (Como) is arts high school addresses
the study of aesthetic phenomena and artistic practice. It promotes the
acquisition of specific methods of research and artistic production and the
competence of related languages and techniques. It provides students with
the tools necessary to know the artistic heritage in its historical and
cultural context and to fully appreciate its presence and value in today's
society. It helps students to deepen and develop their knowledge and
competences and to mature the skills necessary to give expression to their
creativity and design skills in the field of arts. (Age 14-18)

About ARISS:

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative
venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that
support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States,
sponsors are the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), the American
Radio Relay League (ARRL), the Center for the Advancement of Science in
Space (CASIS) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The primary goal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics by organizing scheduled contacts
via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and students in
classrooms or informal education venues. With the help of experienced
amateur radio volunteers, ISS crews speak directly with large audiences in a
variety of public forums. Before and during these radio contacts, students,
teachers, parents, and communities learn about space, space technologies,
and amateur radio. For more informa
 tion, see www.ariss.org, www.amsat.org, and www.arrl.org.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with
participants at Istituto di Istruzione Superiore "Leonardo Da Vinci",
Lanusei, Italy on 04 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately
10:12 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30
seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IS0BWM. The contact
should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are
invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to
be conducted in Italian.

Istituto di Istruzione Superiore "Leonardo Da Vinci"

It is a general secondary school for students from 14 to 19 years old (a
five years' curriculum), where general education is integrated in four
specialised courses: scientific (with strong emphasis given to Maths,
Physics and Science), linguistic (where they learn three second languages
and literatures), human sciences (with Anthropology, Psychology and other
Pedagogy), classical (where they are taught Old Greek and Latin).

The school serves Lanusei and all the villages around with 600ca students
attending its courses.

Apart from classrooms all equipped with interactive multimedia boards, in
the school there are ICT labs, chemistry labs, physics labs, language labs
and gyms.

What makes our school even more unique within the territory is the presence
of a 'planetarium' used to enhance students analysis and study of
astronomical phenomena, which is open to external visitors as well.

Our school is located in Lanusei-Ogliastra, an area in the central east part
of Sardinia (Italy). The little town has only around 5,500 inhabitants, but
has played a key role in the social, cultural and political history of
Ogliastra, the subregion it is a co-capital of together with Tortol?.

The school has taken part in several projects/activities along the years
concerning different educational fields. There are specific subject-oriented
ones such as Maths Olympics, language certification preparation courses,
Latin national contests, or others focused on European citizenship
(Comenius - multilateral projects).

The school tries to stimulate students' education also being partner of
associations such as AFS-Intercultura, local health service), public
institutions (Sardinian Region, Province) and professional communities. All
these activities have largely contributed to the development in our students
of a better attitude towards the others and our community in general, while
also improving their general knowledge and competence.

Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:

1. quali sensazioni si provano durante la fase di lancio?

2. come descriverebbe in tre parole la sua esperienza nello spazio?

3. come ? stata la sua prima missione nello spazio?

4. qual ? la principale differenza in ambito tecnologico tra la sua attuale

    missione e quella del 2007?

5. quando dorme, i suoi sogni sono legati alla Terra o allo spazio?
