Hello,

I was a bit out of the world of radio due to the renovation of the house.

In the meantime I took advantage of replacing my old Kenwood TS-790E with a
new Kenwood TS-2000X.

In the old TS-790, I had the Symek IFD card for receiving 38k4 baud
satellites.

I wanted to know if there are still satellites that still transmit at that
speed and if it is worth inserting the TS-2000X card.

Hello,

I was a bit out of the world of radio due to the renovation of the house.

In the meantime I took advantage of replacing my old Kenwood TS-790E with a
new Kenwood TS-2000X.

In the old TS-790, I had the Symek IFD card for receiving 38k4 baud
satellites.

I wanted to know if there are still satellites that still transmit at that
speed and if it is worth inserting the TS-2000X card.

I had used either Comet or Diamond diplexers in the past, until I
found the MFJ diplexers were about half the price of the Comet and
Diamond units, with what I saw as comparable performance. WiMo in
the US is like your description of MFJ in Europe; I've never seen
or tried WiMo diplexers.

One review I saw a while back actually showed the MFJ-916B to be
much better than Diamond's MX-72:

Paul and Pavel,

I have not tried any of the tri-band versions of the KG-UV8D. Based
on what I saw with the 2m/70cm version, I would not expect that the
KG-UV8E or KG-UV8T (or whatever model number may be used in the
future) would perform any better on FM satellites with a 2m uplink
like SO-50. They would probably be OK for the Fox-1 FM satellites
with 70cm uplinks like AO-85 and AO-91 working full-duplex, but I
have not tested these newer KG-UV8D variants.

For Wouxun radios, I like the KG-UV9D and UV9D Plus HTs for use with
FM satellites. Newer model, better receiver than the previous Wouxun
models. Not capable of full-duplex with SO-50, but do OK with AO-85
and AO-91. For SO-50, I either use the group of memory channels and
work it half-duplex, or get a second radio for full-duplex.

Thanks for the recommendation Patrick, I have contacted MFJ and hope they
will ship a couple of them to the Netherlands. I have also contacted WiMo
for some specs on their diplexers as they aren't available on their
website, I will share them on this list when I receive them.

Page 10 of PA1IVO's presentation at the 2011 AMSAT-UK Colloquium
includes measurements of the Wimo Diplexer. It appears to have very
good specs in general, though it looks like losses were measured at
1.45 dB at 436 MHz, which is a bit high.

?I use diamond mx72n pair to allow a 100 ft run from shack to antennas using
7/8" hardline. .1db loss and plenty of power at 400/250w fm. isolation of
the units back to back is 120db uhf/vhf which is plenty to run satellite
with two radios and two antennas.

I had good experience with the MFJ-916B and got better results compared to

Hello Enzo,

Welcome back to radio :)   Good to hear from you again.

Falconsat-3 has the capability of running a 38k4 downlink, but it's unlikely
that we'll try it.   I have 2 radios with Symek boards---the TS-790A and the
TS-2000X.  You can see my photos of the TS-2000X  mod here:

It may not be worth the risk associated with the modification to your radio.
 Should we try 38k4, using an SDR receiver and software TNC to decode is
probably an easier option to consider.

If there were sufficient numbers of interested hams in running at 38k4, we
might be able to try it.  But for now, it's probably unlikely.

The 1.2GHz transmitter in the TS-2000X will be useful with the soon to be
launched Fox-1Cliff and Fox-1D!

I'm using Gpredict with a 910H without problem, but it cannot (as far as I
know) control hardware directly.
It is designed to use the rigctld and rotctld tools from Hamlib to control
radios and rotors.
