Hi all
I'm doing (at least) three more satellite presentations ( and hopefully
demos) this spring for ham clubs in the western NC region.
I normally play a couple of K8YSE's sat QSOs from his website when I have
internet access at the presentations.
However, I may not have internet access at two presentations this year, so
I'm wondering what software - or methods - I might use to "capture" K8YSE's
MP3 files from his website (or satellite pass recordings from others) and
save them (in whatever format) on my PC so that I don't need internet
access.
This would also come in handy for hamfest tables, so prospective AMSAT'ers
can actually hear what both FM and analog QSOs sound like.

All you need to do is right-click and click save as. The links on his
website are just direct links to MP3 files.
And, it's just a pet peeve of mine, but any SSB or FM voice QSO is "analog."

I'm not sure what sort of computer you may be using. But, if you are on a
windows machine, for example, you should be able to right-click on the file
link of interest, and save a local copy to your machine.
As an example:

Listening for QIKCOM-1: Just to be sure. If the antennas were not
released by the host, then no one will be able to decode it but we are
HOPING that someone can hear it responding by EAR. That is, put your
receiver in SSB mode and listen carefully by ear. Then ping it with as
much AX.25 FM power as you can. No more often than every 12 seconds, since
it has a DUPE filter of 10 seconds.
Then see if you can hear a correlation 1 second avfter each uplink for a
possible digipeat?

Yes, Malcolm was kind enough to refer me to recordings from a number of
diverse receiver sources last night and I only found one with actual
packets ? which decoded to be digipeats through PSAT.
Additionally, I had a nice overhead pass of QIKcom-1 last night and as I?ve
done many times before, tried to exchange APRS packets with it at up to 50w
thru a RHCP yagi gain antenna (X-Quad). No replies were heard,
unfortunately.

Data number 59348 makes sense. At first I was totally confused by the
continuous tone traks aAND the fact that they followed Doppler. Meaning
they must be coming from the spacecraft.
Then I realized that maybe the receiver is Doppler trakcing and so any
fixed tone in the passband would then appear to follow Doppler when in fact
it was constant. So, now that I ignore those, I can see the packets.

However, the visual appearance will vary based on gain and station
configuration. The SatNOGS team responded this morning and eliminated all
of the observations I'd found. The weak signals appear to be NO-84 off the
back of directional antennas. A few decodes from NO-84 and one terrestrial
station.
I've copied Scott Chapman, K4KDR, as he tried last night with negative
results. My station is portable but relatively robust. As time and
weather permit, I may find some acceptable passes and try to warm it up a
little!

WISP will run under Windows 7. It has some quirks but it is good
software. Shout it you need help setting it up.
I'm using an old DPK-9600 TNC and it works well. The TNC needs to support
9600 baud GMSK. I don't know if that means all will work. I had to fiddle
with it a bit to get it setup. It was not quite plug and play, but not far
from it.
That said, there are software only solutions, so if you do not already have
a TNC collecting dust on a shelf (as I did) you might want to use
software. There is advice here: http://www.qsl.net/py4zbz/falconsat.htm
which is very clear once you run google translate on the page.

Been using the SDRPlay2 on a couple of computers and an Android tablet.?
Several pieces of software out there for it.? Have not done satellites yet.
HF and VHF only, but the receiver goes up to 2 GHz.? As always, the key is
having an appropriate antenna for the need.? Cost about US$150 at HRO.? Has
two SMA connectors as well as wire connections and Amazon has a package of
SMA adapters to several connectors for about US$22.?

There are some options that won't break the bank. I have used
the FUNcube Dongle Pro+ and the different SDRplay receivers
(RSP1 for a couple of years, RSP2, and now an RSP1A) for working
satellites. These are all decent receivers, and I use them
with the inexpensive 8- to 11-inch Windows tablets, so I have
access to more software than I would using an Android device.
The FUNcube Dongle Pro+ is available through its UK-based
manufacturer's web site http://www.funcubedongle.com/ . The
SDRplay receivers are sold in the US by HRO. The FUNcube
Dongle Pro+ can be used directly with the FoxTelem software
for AMSAT's Fox-1 satellites and the various AMSAT-UK
FUNcube satellites including AO-73, but the SDRplay receivers
can handle a larger bandwidth (up to 10 MHz) than the FUNcube
Dongle Pro+ (up to 192 kHz). I have been using the SDRplay
RSP1 for a couple of years, and have just picked up its
replacement RSP1A.

Hi Brad!
Have you used the DXPatrol receiver for working amateur
satellites? I haven't worked anyone who has used it for the
downlink side of their station, nor have I tried one, so
I didn't list it in my earlier message. Besides the FUNcube
Dongle Pro+ and various SDRplay receivers I mentioned in
my earlier e-mail, I have also tried some of the RTL dongles
in my satellite station. They were no good - no front-end
filtering, and they stopped receiving whenever I transmitted
with an HT or FT-817 on a different band than where I was
receiving. That's why I first went with a FUNcube dongle,
and later on the SDRplay units.
I went to the DXPatrol web site and downloaded its PDF
manual. It looks like an RTL dongle with an upconverter
for its coverage below 25 MHz. Its price is a little less
than the SDRplay RSP1A sold by HRO.
