The 2014 AMSAT Symposium was a great success. Congratulations to
Frank Bauer KA3HDO and the entire Symposium committee, volunteers, and
Martha. The sessions were enjoyable, the auction was fun, and the
keynote speech from Jan King W3GEY included a great history lesson
with a vision to the future. The Monday tour was the usual
high-caliber destination such as offered at previous Symposiums.

As usual with Symposiums, fellowship with other members was a key
benefit to attendance. AMSAT has a diverse membership with satellite
builders, users, visionaries, educators, promoters, etc. coming from
all walks of life. It was great to see friends old and new.

Congratulations!!! and well done!

I enjoyed talking with a couple of friends who were there in Baltimore via
SO-50 after many weeks of being inactive on satellites. I am planning to be
more active mostly during weekends and SO-50 only...

I would like to see some pictures from the Symposium, waiting for it when
available...

What a joke. The dinner Saturday night was at least 15 plates short.
If I hadn't clued in the wait staff, the unlucky ones would still be
waiting. The event chair sat two seats to my left and didn't lift a
finger.
Not to mention the fact that the same individual left me at the hotel
Monday for the bus tour just added insult to injury.
In the business I was in, that sort of sloppy work got people killed.
I sure hope the same crew has nothing to do with fox.

Hello to all. I just took my g5400b out of storage and decided to test it.
The g5400 appears fine when not under computer control. Az/El motors work
fine and the needles on the controller box correspond where the rotor is
pointing.
I ran satpc32 V.12.8b with the labjack u12 interface. I loaded all drivers
for the labjack as well as serverlabjack. under computer control, the
elevation works flawlessly but the az is out of wack. as soon as I hit the
R+ button to initiate rotor control, the az will go completely to the clock
wise end point and the labjack light remains on, power still going to the
motor even at end stop. I even switched the turning point setting to north
from south. This made the az do the opposite, completely CCW without
shutting off.
While I was playing with it, a satellite came in view. The g5400 started
tacking the sat. At first it was right on target, but then the az kept
moving CCW in small increments until it reached its end stop, still not
shutting off power.
I thought it might be a bad pot in the rotor, but I am receiving accurate
readings on the controller. Position readings on the serverlabjack dde
screen do not correspond with the actual pointing direction.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and 73, Keith

A point of trivia, related to AMSAT as it is using OSCAR zero:

You may know that in the Netherlands, the CAMRAS foundation took over
the large telescope of Dwingeloo. This year during upcoming JOTA weekend,
several stations will try to make QSO's using QRP EME via the moon
using WSJT and the telescope (accessible via WebSDR) as
Receiver With Large Ears.

Information, in Dutch alas, can be found at
http://www.camras.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id
=85&Itemid=109&lang=nl

You should be able to listen in using the same WebSDR station.

Please join me to congratulate the volunteers of CAMRAS, and especially
Frans PE1RXJ, for organizing and facilitating this impressive feat.

Unfortunately, I'm too busy with other aspects of JOTA but I wish the
stations doing this experiment / demonstration the best of luck!

Geert Jan

Wow,

Talk about an attitude. Thanks for bringing up your concerns to the chair
and being part of the team. BTW, the hotel was working on resolving this
way before you even said a word. Fortunately, there were other folks around
that "really" cared.

The conference was a huge success, the auction will be remembered for years
and the presentation were first class. My personal thanks to the AMSAT
team, the chair and everyone that made this a very enjoyable and exciting
event. It is a privilege being part of this organization!

To see the violence that a cubesat has to go through, here is a test we did
today on a power supply board.

It failed even before we got to the 22G requirement!

Aside from HO-68 which has a rather strong beacon CW signal, and UKube-1,
EO-79, does anyone have any suggestions for satellites with relatively
strong beacon signals of any kind that would make good "Track the Sat" demos
for the JOTA event I am running this weekend. Keith Pugh, W5IU will be
helping me with AMSAT demos but I have wondered for some time now which
birds folks felt had the strongest, most easily tracked beacon signals.

<snip>

The video clip reminded me of something in the episode "Spider" of the
HBO series "From The Earth To The Moon". The narrator described what
happened in the Apollo Lunar Module during the launch like being
inside a can of paint while it's mixed in the store.

   Hello, Mike, Tom, all,

Yes, and the russian Mozhayets-4 (RS-22) too has a very, very strong
beacon signal on 435.352 MHz (about the level of Xiwang-1 HO68, maybe
higher).
Tom, if you have not the grid to decode the CW telemetry, I will send it
to you directly (a small pdf file). And a short mp3 sample if you want.

   Have a nice day !

Hi All,

I willl be present again using EME via the CAMRAS system.
I have participated two previous times, during the testing phase and as
pilot during JOTA, and that was very successful.

Many satellite stations are already well equipped to work EME using the
CAMRAS "big ears", but I am using a slight overkill system to ensure
success.

Satellite wise I will focus on FUNcube, since I can explain the design and
present about the FUNcube project to the troop.
Thanks Jim for uploading the fitter message.

See you all on HF, VHF/UHF, sats, ATV, EME and on YouTube!

Hi Keith,
I use also the Labjack U12 and the Kenpro 5600B rotor combination
(compatible with the G 5400).
The reason of the problem could be that the azimuth "Out voltage" from
the control box to the Labjack U12 is missing or too low or the azimuth
calibration is wrong.

First make sure that the azimuth "Out voltage" control on the rear side
of the rotor control box is set to maximum output (+ 5...6 V at the
rotor end position).

If that doesn't help display ServerLabjack normally. Click on
"Calibration" to display the calibration window. First click on "Help"
for detailed instructions about how to proceed, then run the calibration
function. Save the changes and restart SatPC32.

for the labjack as well as serverlabjack. under computer control, the
elevation works flawlessly but the az is out of wack. as soon as I hit the
R+ button to initiate rotor control, the az will go completely to the clock
wise end point and the labjack light remains on, power still going to the
motor even at end stop. I even switched the turning point setting to north
from south. This made the az do the opposite, completely CCW without
shutting off.

moving CCW in small increments until it reached its end stop, still not
shutting off power.

readings on the controller. Position readings on the serverlabjack dde
screen do not correspond with the actual pointing direction.

Hello Tom,
Good luck with your event at the weekend - I am hoping to be available for
an event to be held over here in Wales on the Sunday.
Amsat -UK have kindly posted to the Funcube-1 message board ( Dashboard )
best wishes to all Scouts
participating in the JOTA event.
Not sure at the moment on the operating status for the weekend ( ie usual
weekends the transponder
is fully on and data mode in low power )
The message to the scouts is currently available on the "Fitter" display
you may like to save it and perhaps
use in your demonstration.
Regarding other satellites -please consider EO-79 and EO-80 they are quite
strong if the pass times are co-incident with your events. Sadly UO-11 has
not recovered from its shut down but you might also like to consider DO-64
or the packet modes from the ISS.
Good luck hope all goes well.
