Whenever I need to put electrical components outside and want them water and
bug proofed, I use the gray Carlon boxes that are sold at big box stores and
at electrical supply houses. For cable entries, I use a properly sized
waterproof cable gland. Those are a little harder to find, but usually
Digikey, Allied, or similar has them for order. Here's an?example.

Dear Folks:

Forgive me if someone has already discussed this, but I noticed a
"rumbling" noise in the background during this morning's AO 91 pass.?
What is that?? It almost sounds like a train is passing by.? It was not
dependent on someone transmitting as it was present even while there was
no one speaking.? But, it faded away as soon as the pass was over at my QTH.

And I of course left my Alinco DJ-G7T at my summer home in NJ. So I said
what the hey, I ordered a 1.2 gig module for my IC-9100, and a Comet
CYA-1216e . I found the 1.2 gig antenna at R&L for $134, a new UX-9100 on
Ebay shipped to me for a total of $412 from Japan. What a deal :-)

Initial L-band testing (approximately a 16 deg eastern pass) indicated that
it may not take as much power as initially thought to get into the L-band
portion of AO-92. One op, N8HM was using an Alinco DJ-G7T handheld with 1
watt and a modified Comet CYA-1216e yagi (boom drilled to accept 2m elements
from Arrow antenna. Feed line was 4' of LMR-240UF plus two adapters: BNC to
SMA adapter for the HT and BNC to N adapter. Another op, N8TLV, was using an
FT-104 hand held with 1 watt, fed into stock rubber duck antenna. Again,
this was initial testing and represents my personal observations. I am not
affiliated with AMSAT, other than being a member and enthusiastic satellite
operator.
The Comet CYA-1216e yagi, when combined with Arrow Antennas 2m elements,
appears to be a popular antenna for portable operations. M2 Antennas,
Directive Systems Engineering, and WiMo offer several antenna choices,
depending if you need a tower-mounted antenna or something capable of being
handheld.
Shorter, high quality coax, with no adapters will always provide a better
result. LMR240 or 240UF will be fine for shorter, hand-held runs, LMR400
for moder runs, and LMR600 + for longest runs.
As for a preamp, it will depend on your setup. If you need a preamp to hear
AO-91, then you will need one to hear AO-92.
Hope this helps,73 de KE4AL, Robert EM71

Bernie,

You are hearing the Data Under Voice telemetry. It is transmitted in the
0-200 Hz range where CTCSS tones are normally sent. Whether you hear it,
and how much, depends on how sharply your rig cuts off the low frequencies.
All the Fox spacecraft, except for the unlaunched Fox-1E, use it so as to
provide telemetry while allowing repeater operations.

Bob,

I use PVC water resistant junction boxes that have a gasket on the
lid.?? They make them in a bunch of sizes, but here is an example:
https://www.amazon.com/Thomas-Betts-E989NCAR-8X8X4-JUNCTION/dp/B00JV3F1LU/

These make a good starting point.? You'd want to add a drain hose and
some water-resistant cable entry/strain relief fitting to the bottom.

You can also find water-tight strain relief fittings for passing cables
into the box, though these fittings are quite pricey:

I have one of the "rare" DEMI 144/1268 converters; does 15w out. Not
many were made/sold before AO-40 crashed. Also a 45 loop-yagi for 1268.

I have a venerable FT736R (with only 2m/70cm) for satellite operation
(future). But if the mode will be LV (1268up/145dn) I will have to
use a different radio for either uplink or downlink as the FT736R
does not do in-band duplex on 144. I have two other radios that will
do 2m allmode but it gets more complicated for tuning. FT736R has
satellite mode for 2m/70cm (probably one of the first to do
that). If the mode will be LU then all is fine.

I also still have my mode-S preamp and two Drake downconverters if
ever that band is reactivated.

PS: not QRV on satellites (yet)

I use a regular plastic power outlet box from the local electrical
wholesaler or
Home Depot. They are grey plastic with knockouts around the outside and
come in
various sizes. Most times I use a 6x6 inch box for that extra room. The
coax/wiring goes thru the bottom and the rest is sealed. The cover has a
gasket
to seal with.

 Ed,
Fox-1D (AO-92) and Fox-1-Cliff will have two different modes U/v and L/v.?
Switching between two different modes will be by AMSAT command.? In
addition, AMSAT-UK will be launching their ESEO satellite this year;
however, it will be L/v only, per their website.? I know of no plans for
satellites in the L/u mode at this time. Fox-1D and Fox-1Cliff both utilize
and L-band downshifter that uses the UHF antenna, so, by design, these two
satellites, will not be capable of L/u mode.
Your 1268-144 transverter is certainly rare.? I did see where you posted to
the AMSAT BB back in 2010 about it, but did not find anything else in a
quick Google search.? Cherish it.
Certainly hope you can get your IF radio sorted out and able to get back on
the birds.? I look forward to our first QSO.

Hi Ed-I too have a box full of AO-40 (sobsob) S band stuff. Hoping against
hope it will be useful. However with so much stuff using 2.4 I think it's
not practical for us to be using it. I'm keeping the box, just in case. I
would like to see a discussion regarding the use of S band for our
satellites. Anyone?
