Don is correct. In my former work I installed radio systems on boats
and considered 5-years trouble-free operation "full life cycle". I
sealed those cables with a layer of scotch-30 annealing tape with
Scotch 33+ over that. The boats were in 27 to 45 foot class so
subject to considerable saltwater spray. We also had two 200-foot
oil well support vessels on Cook Inlet in Alaska.

My Ham Radio use of LMR-400 gets about ten years life, even with
super diligent sealing. The aluminum tape shield is subject to
corrosion in presence of moisture. Using true hardline like LDF
cables will outlast LMR cables. Why they are used in commercial
radio sites. I live two miles from Cook Inlet.

My main VHF/UHF transmission line is 120 foot of LDF7-50A which is
1-5/8 inch in diameter and cost me $1.00/foot new surplus (got a
160-foot remnant). It has about 0.27 dB/100 foot loss at 150-MHz. I
get about 5w on 1296 with 15w input over a 170-foot combined run of
LMR-600 & LDF7-50A.

Coax does not live forever - unless used as a dummy load (LOL)

This has been an interesting chain of posts and I have copied it for
distribution at our club.? Thanks. I will continue to follow it.

However, to those out there that think that you can eliminate water
in coax with proper sealing, you are only delaying the inevitable,
especially if you live in a humid climate like New Orleans

I guess I differ with Greg KO6TH on what I consider "reasonable
loss". I do a lot of VHF thru mw frequencies and hate to loose more
than 1-dB in loss. I consider 25-foot of RG-213 at 144-MHz as max,
then go to LMR-400 for longer runs (up to 150-foot). If longer runs
needed then I use LDF or equivalent hardline.

My 2m eme antennas are 214 foot from the PA and measured total loss
is 1.67 dB, but my preamps are mounted on the tower and only see
about 0.4 dB loss. On 1296 my dish is about 100-foot from the shack
and I have 6-dB loss in the LMR-600 transmission line. Fortunately
my high power PA's are located at the dish and only need 2w drive
from my 20w transverter in the shack. On 1296 receive the preamp is
mounted directly to the dish feed and have about 125 foot of LMR-400
to transverter (7-dB loss). But preamp has 37-dB gain so easily
overcomes the loss with about 30-dB residual gain to the transverter
to result in 0.3 dBNF. This is all for eme where losses will kill
your ability so see weak signals.

Gary, W5ETJ, and I plan to trek down toward the Mexico border on Saturday,
27 January.

Will be in DM90 for the 1512Z pass of CAS-4B, the 1532Z pass of AO-85 and
the 1613Z pass of AO-92 (assuming it's open for
business).

Will also work the 1652Z pass of CAS-4B (probably still in DM90.) Also the
1727Z SO-50 pass probably from DL99.

The 1904Z pass of SO-50 and the 1915Z pass of AO-91 will be from DL98/DL99
line.

May work the 2050Z pass of AO-7 on the return trip, likely from DM90.

Will upload to LoTW after the trip. Hard copy QSL request by email.

Follow me on APRS as AA5PK-9. Will provide updates on Twitter as @?????

These seem interesting with 5 MBPS OFDM downlink on 5.8 GHz.

I'm wondering if there are sufficient details published to do an SDR?

Here is a link to their IARU frequency coordination submission:
http://www.amsatuk.me.uk/iaru/finished_detail.php?serialnum=556

While the frequencies are listed, the team did not provide many additional
details about their ODFM. The submission form does have a contact e-mail
though.

The Kenwood TH-D72 is the only in production HT that is truly full duplex
in that it won't desense the receiver on 70cm when you TX on 2m. This is
important for SO-50 and any birds with similar band usage. It also has
APRS/packet so you can use it with digipeaters.

Also, other than the battery, I'm not sure the TH-D72 will outperform
the IC-W32 for satellite use. The lowest cost option would be to
simply acquire a new battery for the aging IC-W32 unless there are
other problems with it.

Paul,

Newer versions of the IC-W32 have desense when transmitting on
2m and trying to simultaneously on 70cm - like we do for SO-50.
?This includes some with higher 5-digit serial numbers, and those
with 7-digit serial numbers. I had no problems using my IC-W32
with the ISS cross-band repeater whenever it was in U/V mode,
and it should do fine with AO-85, AO-91, etc. It had desense
when working SO-50, but its receiver was good for old FM
satellites back in the days of AO-51 and AO-27. It should be
great with the Fox-1 FM satellites and their strong 2m
downlinks.

If your IC-W32 has no desense when working SO-50, Paul's
suggestion is good. Companies like batteriesamerica.com still
sell new battery packs for that radio, and even a 6-cell AA
case (Icom's only held 4 AA cells). If yours has desense with
SO-50, you'll have to decide if you can live with that, or look
for another radio that will do full-duplex with both V/U and
U/V satellites - like the TH-D72 that is currently in production.

73!

Does desense on 2m occur with using Mode B FM satellites in full duplex on
other current HTs?

I emailed a couple of addresses associated with those satellites not long
after launch but have not gotten any reply.

Here is a look at what is known so far in regard to their transmissions on
70cm:

John,

"(O)n current HTs"? Other than some reports I have seen about
the Alinco DJ-G7T and its poor receiver for FM satellites in
general, it appears that the HTs that have been previously
reported as capable of full-duplex operation with V/U FM
satellites like AO-51 and SO-50 would be fine with the mode
B (U/V) satellites like AO-91 and AO-92. With the uplink on
70cm, you avoid issues with harmonics which can be an issue
on some radios capable of full-duplex operation when you
transmit on 2m - keeping in mind that frequencies in the
435-438 MHz satellite subband can be very close to the third
harmonic of the 2m uplink frequency.

After AO-85's launch in October 2015, I tested a few Chinese-
made 2m/70cm FM HTs that were advertised as being capable of
full-duplex operation. None of them could work SO-50 full-
duplex due to receiver desense, but could be used with AO-85.
I wrote a series of AMSAT-BB posts about those tests at that
time, and a link to a summary with other links to the specific
models is in the AMSAT-BB archive:

http://amsat.org/pipermail/amsat-bb/2015-December/056269.html

I have been using the Wouxun KG-UV9D with AO-91 on a regular
basis, either with my Elk log periodic or an MFJ-1717 2m/70cm
long duckie. This radio, along with other HTs like my TH-D72
and an old TH-D7 I had for a little bit, is capable of full-
duplex operation with mode B (U/V) satellites. I have seen
other reports online of hams using a Wouxun KG-UV8D (or one
of its variants) to successfully work AO-91 full-duplex.

73!
