I've recently joined AMSAT and would like to try the cubesats. About
30 years ago I was active (FP/VE1KM, FP4EK, FP5EK) on the linear
satellites available at the time but wouldn't consider myself up to
speed. So I downloaded the guide on getting started on satellites.

Along with my membership I ordered and received the WRAPS project
board. And I was recently given a FT726R, but I'll get to that later.

I'm looking for some advice with a couple of items, starting with the
WRAPS project. Before ordering the parts (for the tricked-out WRAPS) I
wanted to ask if there have been any changes to the design, should I go
ahead with the parts list as published?

I'll bring up the FT726R later, it may need a little work.

I have built the WRAPS. The parts list is still good. It is a fun project
and works great.

Ron,

There are just 2 parts lists. One to Digi Key and one to a servo place. If
you order everything on both lists, you will have everything you need and
not need any more parts. I just typed in the numbers (did not even bother
looking for the parts)/ 3 days later, you will have a complete kit in your
hands. Before you start mechanical assembly, call me at 847-five one
four-8566 and I will give you some tips that will help you avoid some
problems. You can call me anytime.

Looks like the group behind the burned up D-Star ONE project somehow
managed to get a second satellite built and launched in a little over a
month. They're getting data from it, and are awaiting the TLE. Pretty crazy
how fast they got that up there.

I don't have a second D-Star radio, but maybe it'll be workable without
being able to hear myself.

Hi all,
Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be activating FM28(FX) from
Killens State Park near Felton, Delaware on Sunday February 25, 2018 for
2-1/2 hour roving stint.
I plan to work the following birds between 1700Z to 1935Z.AO-91 1707Z-1720Z
44 degree passAO-95 1749Z-1801Z 15 degree passAO-7 1815Z-1834Z 32 degree

This trip will be weather dependent so if snow, ice, or heavy rain is
forecast for that area on that day I may be forced to reschedule. I will
update if there is any changes.

It's a half-duplex parrot repeater, so there's no need to hear
yourself. The trick is Doppler compensation.

I find it somewhat odd that they've managed to receive signals, but
everyone else in Europe is reporting silence. We shall see.

Potential Keps from Space Track are:

1 43184U 18014E 18033.08269475 -.00000058 00000-0 00000+0 0 9993
2 43184 97.7305 303.2289 0012801 243.8166 116.1553 14.95704337 119

In other satellite news, one or maybe two Chinese amateur satellites
was launched earlier this morning. FMN-1 carries an FM transponder
with an uplink of 145.945 MHz and a downlink of 435.350 MHz. Telemetry
downlink is 9k6 BPSK on 435.350 MHz. It's possible that one of the
other CubeSats on the mission, Shaonian XIng, is one of the Juvenile
series satellites coordinated here:
http://www.amsatuk.me.uk/iaru/finished_detail.php?serialnum=547

However, without any communication from the satellite owners to the
amateur community, all we can do is speculate and listen to see what's
heard.

One object has been cataloged by Space Track for that launch so far:

1 43192U 18015A 18033.45158700 -.00000069 00000-0 00000+0 0 9994
2 43192 97.3413 165.3763 0014311 275.0882 167.9240 15.22360621 19

Well that certainly makes it a little easier. Are the doppler issues any
different than the normal ones we face on a 70cm satellite?

The TLE on that Chinese sat suggests it'll get passes over the US, so
that's good news if it's actually another FM bird. Having a handful of new
satellites up there all at once will hopefully spread out the crowds so
that we don't have people blasting them with 50W trying to beat out the
other stations.

Tests on AO-27 showed that D-STAR fails if the frequency is more than
1.5 kHz off, that means there are times when you will not be able to
access or hear the satellite using 5 kHz steps. The IC-9100 can be
fine tuned and computer controlled, I'm not sure about any other
D-STAR radios, maybe the IC-7100 can be too.

That'll make it rough on my ID-51A+, minimum 5kHz steps. Still worth a
shot. I was looking an at IC-9100 for a while, but man is that thing
expensive.

Used CAS4B for my one WFD contact. Even with a low 15 degree max el orbit
far to the east signals were strong, and stable. Next to FO29, this is my
favorite linear bird, but few people use it. Had a young blind student on
that satellite making contacts about 2 weeks ago. Have yet to make a CW
contact on it though, but hardly necessary since SSB signals are so
strong/clear.

I heard a mysterious Chinese satellite at 9k6 BPSK on 435,325 MHz:

from BUAABJ to BUAAGS (UI, payload: 31 byte)
