One of the XW-2 birds seems to have a steady digitial signal in the center
of the passband. Is this from the bird, or something it is hearing on the
uplink?

If it is on the 435.21 to 435.23 uplink it should be nice challenge to try
to derive its position from Doppler observations, and then start searching
on the ground. Both are lots of fun and a nice ham challenge.

Again, I have not listend to these birds enough to get the big picture, so
if I am confused, ignore me.

Its just that this week is our classes annual week to tune in some
satellites and I have heard this signal multiple passes.

Hi Brian,

We try to get the word out, best we can. Hopefully Drew KO4MA and the
Operations Team will be able to set a weekly schedule that can be followed
as frequently as possible. Some exceptions will occur, but a routine
schedule will help all users (and the command team).

I posted an email this morning to this list right after commanding into
L-band mode. The subject of my email eluded to being in L-band for 24
hours. I didn't make clear it would be back in U/v after that...but that's
likely to be the default

Also, The Amsat New Service had the information about the schedule, in
advance. You should subscribe, if you don't already. Check our webpage on
how to do that.

Also, the schedule is on the webpage as well, posted in advance. So the
info is there, just have to keep your eyes open and look a bit. It'll get
easier as we go...and we'll continue to try to make it known.

Hi All-

Being part of the "digitally challenged" group and most probably being one
of those requesting assistance (thanks Glenn). I'm getting better. I enjoy
using Satpc-32, however when the "wheels come off" it can be most
frustrating. I believe in the KISS principle. Perhaps as several have
mentioned it's time to massage this piece of software. The basics are
already there we just need to KISS it.

Just had a very low pass here in CM98 - 2 degrees off to the north-west,
over the ocean. I heard Veronica on the downlink, but was not able to
get into the bird myself.

I only have 10 watts from my FT-736R into a 32 element
horizontally-polarized beam, fed with 60' of mostly hardline, and some
RG-213 at the ends. So, I'm guessing no more than a couple of watts at
the antenna... But I was basing Doppler on 1267.350; will try .360
tonight on the 20:47 PDT pass. 47 degrees; should be a LOT easier, too.

Hi!

I was not able to hear that 2-degree pass here in Arizona, but
I was at least listening to the two earlier passes. I know I
got through on one, and the other I received a message saying
I was heard. No QSOs, and my setup may explain a bit...

The first of the two passes was at 1638 UTC. It was a 26-degree
pass here in Phoenix, and I went to my favorite city park on the
DM33/DM43 grid line. My station for this attempt was:

TX: Alinco DJ-G7T (1W TX), Diamond RH951S 2m/70cm/23cm whip
RX: Kenwood TH-D74, Elk Antennas handheld 2m/70cm log periodic

I heard a few stations - N1JEZ, VE4AMU, WA4SCA, WB8RJY, and
AA5PK. I was fishing all around, trying to find a combination
of radio/antenna orientation and uplink frequency that might
actually work. I didn't hear myself, but I received a message
after this pass saying that I was heard. Seeing the later pass
was lower, and not being successful this time, I went home.
Glad I did - I found another 1.2 GHz antenna in my collection,
a Comet CY-1205 5-element 1.2 GHz Yagi, with a BNC connector
(these were also sold with TNC connectors, years before HTs
went to SMA connectors). The BNC connector is on the bottom
of the driven element, as this antenna mounts directly on a
radio.

For the second pass I tried, 1812 UTC, it was lower - only up
to a maximum elevation of 14 degrees. My station this time:

TX: Alinco DJ-G7T (1W TX), Comet CY-1205 5-element 1.2 GHz Yagi
RX: Kenwood TH-D74, MFJ-1717 long 2m/70cm duckie

The downlink was off at the start of the pass, and I was able
to hear Veronica's voice ID. Tom N6NUG in San Diego was able
to turn on the satellite. I was frantically trying different
uplink frequencies and radio/antenna orientations, hoping I
could get through and make a QSO. I was able to finally get
through, but after a couple of transmissions I never heard
any more from N6NUG. A directional antenna certainly made a
difference, since I could get through on the lower of the two
passes this morning.

I posted the recordings from these two passes in my Dropbox
space. Go to http://dropbox.wd9ewk.net/ and look in the
"Satellite_Audio-2018" folder. I have the original WAV files
as recorded by my TH-D74 and a couple of MP3s I made from those
WAV files in that folder; just look for the date/time (UTC) of
the passes.

For tonight, I have a 6.5-degree pass at 0315 UTC, followed by
a 60-degree pass at 0445 UTC. I may try the low pass from a
park away from home, but I will definitely be ready for the 0445
UTC pass. Hopefully it isn't too crowded. :-)

73!

I worked only one pass, but I also noted that I (maybe) didn't get in till I
raised my input to about .360 or so. I now have 1267.350, 1267.355, and
1267.360 loaded in SatPC32. I might be able to sneak away from my guests to
try the 2 east coast passes tonite.

I'm wondering what other ops are seeing for Doppler settings on their
L-Band uplink. Here in VT - last pass - It was pretty consistently +10
kHz on my FT-736R.

I plan to change SATPC32 to use 1267.360 and give that a try. I was
using manual VFO mode on the rig, so I had full range tuning - not steps
- and could adjust for best quieting.

L band system here:
FT-736R - 1.2 GHz module
DL2AM 60 watt amp (power is fully adjustable)
D/S 55 el 1269 loop yagi

I'm contemplating trading a IC-7300 for a TS-2000. I need a backup radio
for satellites and EME. Are there any issues you users know about the 2000
vintage 2002? Was it plagued with birdies in the sat passband?

?
I have been licensed since 1966. I have fond memories of working LEO
satellites like RS12/13, RS15, etc. but have not done any satellite work
since the failure of AO40. The number of new LEO sats has
encouraged me to get back in the game so I pulled out some equipment &
checked it out and am ready for the antenna. Sorry for being so long-winded
but I thought a little history was in order so you would understand what I
am about to ask. I know what circular polarization is and why it is used.
My question is, has there been any study or article or some real life actual
experiences comparing CP antennas VS non CP antennas on the birds we
currently have available? I have small antennas that have 70 cm & 144 Mhz in
the same plane on one boom. Do you think it is necessary to go to the
time and expense to get a CP antenna (70 CM/144 Mhz) of either on the same
boom or even more expense of a separate 70 CM CP antenna and a 144 Mhz CP
separated on a longer boom? Thanks in advance…. ?

SatPC32 has worked well for me for many years, yes the SQF files require
some reading and a little effort to figure out but once you get past
that bump they are easy to use.

All I hope is if something is automated there will be a box to check to
turn it off.

Many of my files are tuned to my station and what I am interested in for
which mode I want to have as default, if everyone understood them and
what they can do then they would understand one automated size does not
fit all.

Hi All,

While I agree SatPC32 has a few things that could be improved let's
also remember that Erich DK1TB is on the newsgroup, I believe he owns
full rights to the application and does quite a service to the
community I don't believe the profits from the application.

The question came up about the last release it was 12.8c I think from
a quick Google it was released in 2013.

The software has quirks but at the same time, while rewriting a new
application its worth remembering it also needs a support system you
only have to watch the constant flow of people asking for help on here
and facebook.

It's not just a simple thing of "writing a new app" or getting the source
code.
