I agree with most of the comments in this thread. Although SatPC32 has
worked fairly well, I find myself using other tracking programs in
concert with it. I like Wisp32 as to being able to have a one shot
display of many of the satellites in view schedules at a time then chose
the one for the map. The only problem is that Wisp332 is picky running
under Windows 10 and the registry. Sometimes the satellites disappear
after and upgrade and system reboot. I find by adding just one satellite
back in and my QTH info, they all come back.

At times I use Instatrak for printing out schedules.

Good afternoon!

I just bit the bullet and joined AMSAT with the QRO 80 membership. I'm
delighted to be able to download the Getting Started...guide. It looks like a
really tremendous resource.

One of the reasons I chose the membership at that level was the copy of
SATPC32 that comes with it. I'm not quite clear on how the software is
delivered with the membership. Can anyone tell me whether it's the
downloadable version, or if I'll be receiving CD? I'm not seeing how I'm
supposed to receive it.

Thank you!

Rick, suggest checking the files section of the Yahoo TS2000 Group. Since
this issue is described in the manual (ie 'designed in'), I think it is
there forever. I'm not aware of a fix or that firmware updates fixed
anything

I'm contemplating trading a IC-7300 for a TS-2000. I need a backup radio for
satellites and EME. Are there any issues you users know about the 2000
vintage 2002? Was it plagued with birdies in the sat passband?

As far as HRD is concerned, the new owner, Mike Carper, WA9PIE, claims he is
committed to 'fixing' the Sat portion of HRD. He has been invited to comment
on this forum on many occasions. So far its 'crickets from HRD.

I agree that there is plenty of room to improve SatPC 32. Only being able
to track 12 satellites per group is a limitation. Modifying the files is
not difficult in my opinion, but automated downloads like the keps would be
an improvement. I remember the days of manual keps input. I can't remember
the last time SatPC 32 had an update.

I use SatPC 32 to automate my station radio and rotors. Works very well.

For pass planning and announcement I use HRD Satellite Tracking and
MacDoppler. These programs have a much better graphical interface. To bad
the HRD Satellite Tracker does not work well for station automation.
MacDoppler works well for station integration but my shack computer is a
Windows box.

Does AMSAT own the code to SatPC32 or would a group of programmers need to
start from scratch?

On the Amsat-UK.org website under satellites they have a SQF file that you
can
download or do a cut and paste. But unfortunately it too needs to be
updated with
AO-91 and AO-92.

I do like they way they have the option to download their news letter for
members.
Its similar to the Amsat-NA journal but is only published four times a
year. Its nice
to save the downloads and build a library. I like having it on the e-reader
and be able
to take several with me to read on the bus and also have the hyper links in
the articles.

It would be nice if SatPC32 was a little more automated and customizable
with some
of the files and keps updates.

I just had a very noisy 6 degree max pass here in VT. There was nobody
in the footprint on L Band so I tested nominal frequency for the uplink.

This time the nominal was ~ 8.5 kHz high. 1267.3585

More testing is needed, especially with lower power to fine tune.

In no way are my remarks meant to disparage Erich DK1TB for his efforts.
We?re all grateful for his work, and that he donates the proceeds to AMSAT
to support our hobby.

And yes, I can see the advantage of tweaking the Doppler files for
individual radios, and their quirks. However, it should be a simple matter
to update Kep files, and add new satellites. That process should be
automated, and easy to do. It?s possible to have both?and considering that
we literally have rocket scientists working on this phase of the hobby, it?s
almost inconceivable that we don?t have better software for this critical
task.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"

Greetings all...

I'm glad to accept the invitation to participate in this email reflector.

I want to say a few words about our intentions regarding the Satellite
tracking app in Ham Radio Deluxe.

To recap, in brief, for those who haven't followed the path of Ham Radio
Deluxe...

Ham Radio Deluxe was developed by Simon Brown in the early 2000's... pretty
much as an experiment or hobby. By 2010, there were over 100,000
registered users using the software for free... but Simon wanted to move on
to other interests. By the end of 2011, Internet posts were full of
"R.I.P" postings and no real development had been done for more than a year.

I was looking to move off of an old logging program (Log Windows) and Ham
Radio Deluxe looked interesting, but it lacked serious capabilities that
DXers need. After contacting Simon and much convincing, I talked him into
selling me the source code and the rights to Ham Radio Deluxe (past,
present, and future). But I'm not a developer... and I needed one. I
partnered with two other people (Rick and Randy). Rick and Erik did the
development through the end of 2016. And while Randy and I continued with
our "day jobs", Rick was appointed "managing partner" and ran the company
until 1/1/2017 when he left and Randy and I assumed full and equal control
of the company.

The reason I point this out is this: Since Randy and I took control of the
company on 1/1/2017, we brought in a fantastic developer who whipped
through 150 items in the product backlog and we had 10 releases in 2017.
Much progress was made. However, this developer decided to move on to
other things. At the end of last fall, we added a new developer and he's
doing a fine job (though he's not a ham).

To the present...

It's clear that Ham Radio Deluxe has become too large for a single
developer. It's not fair to expect a single developer to tend five
applications. And while Rig Control, Logbook, and DM-780 account for about
80% of the requested fixes and features... it tends to "drown-out" the
other applications - Satellite Tracking, Rotor Control, and Mapper.

Make no mistake - I'm committed to ALL the applications in the Ham Radio
Deluxe suite.

In the past few weeks, I have begun on-boarding two additional developers.
It's my intention to on-board one or two more over the next few weeks.

My plan is to have a primary developer for each of the applications. Given
that there's no better time to focus on satellite work than during a
sunspot low (me included)... we will absolutely give the Satellite app the
time it deserves.

I'm actually feeling pretty good about the progress we made in 2017. But
there's a whole lot more to do.

If there's a developer among you who would like to jump in (and get paid)
to work on the Satellite app... by all means, contact me directly and I'll
give you the keys. I absolutely want this app to be the very best
satellite app available for hams. (Significant and demonstrated experience
with Visual Studio, C++, MFC is required. Able to work and make progress
independently - because I've got a day-job that still requires 60 hrs a
week.)

But yes - I'm aware that we've got work to do here and I'm absolutely
committed to getting it done.

We'll be at the Orlando Hamcation this weekend... come see us if you're in
the area!

Mike, WA9PIE

Nick,

I believe you will get a cd.
While you wait you can download it from
www.dk1tb.de/indexeng.htm

It won?t be fully operational until you get your registration key, which
should come from the AMSAT office. It will work but you can?t save your
settings until it is registered.

You can run multiple copies on multiple machines.

Welcome to AMSAT.

Yes, definitely need to shoot a little high on the L-band uplink. I was
running it about 10khz high, but it seemed to have some tolerance for
being off by a few. Made contact on the 04:47z pass with Patrick
WD9EWK, and also heard AD5MT, but couldn't complete the contact. Manual
tuning of the FT-736R uplink, watching Gpredict's display, with computer
control of the FT847 downlink and antenna rotisserie. That's the first
contact on L-band since, um, AO-51? Nice to know it still all works!
Now I need to figure out how to get Gpredict to run both radios...

Stations heard have a "distant" sound to them - kind of hard to
describe, and not something I've heard on other satellites. I think the
lower part of the audio frequency response may not be as strong as the
upper part. Also, the audio was kind of quiet overall (comparing to the
unsquelched hash). {shrug} Certainly not a big problem, however you do
have to listen carefully. Headphones required.
