The launch was successful. Both side boosters landed at Cape
Canaveral, with the status of the main booster pending. The second
stage, including the Tesla, is now in LEO.

An excellent first launch for a new booster. Well done, SpaceX!

Eh, I wouldn't go too hard on then. What happened (is happening) today was
probably the least likely outcome. Quite an amazing accomplishment.

It would have been nice if the in-dash unit had been upgraded to a D710 for
crossbanding. I presume Sir Isaac is inside the suit (who else would be
driving?).

As I watched the Falcon 9 Heavy launch today just before liftoff I heard
the usual
words...... And now the onboard computer has taken control of the rocket.
It got
me wondering about the type of computer being used. What type of bus, how
many
boards being used, all the connections for sensors, valves, monitoring.
What are
they using as a main processor. Did they design it from the ground up or
use a
model from earlier rocket launches and modify it.

Anybody know if the car computer is running its full Ubuntu-based OS? In

community's running gag about planning for running its OS on Mars.

I am hearing that the core booster did not make the barge landing and hit
the water at 300mph and was destroyed.
I hope that is not the case as it would be remarkable to have all 3 back
safe and sound.

According to the user manual (
http://www.spacex.com/sites/spacex/files/falcon_9_users_guide_rev_2.0.pdf):
- Avionics
Falcon launch vehicle avionics, and guidance, navigation and control
systems use a fault-tolerant
architecture that provides full vehicle single-fault tolerance and uses
modern computing and
networking technology to improve performance and reliability. The fault
tolerance is achieved
either by isolating compartments within avionics boxes or by using
triplicated units of specific
components. Both the first and second stages host their own multiple
redundant lithium-ion
batteries to minimize the complexity of the electrical interface.

So whatever they are using they have 3 of them on board.
