Seems that the attempt to switch to high speed for HERCI last night was
unsucessful (heard Drew say to resume normal transponder use). Is the
attempt @ 0215 2/22/18 still planned? Any idea what the issue was?

The rest of the schedule still stands. Tomorrow morning we will exercise the
camera on the 1540UTC pass, so having your FoxTelem running and in Auto or
High Speed mode would help capture as many images as possible. We could use
more stations in Central and South America submitting as well.

Isolatiion shorted (OR OVERVOLTAGE) on COM port?

Ask why a device would not deliberately turn on given a set of conditions.

IF you'd like to spend the afternoon parts swapping, the line driver
is a standard cross.

OTOH, There are a spare line driver pair on the MAX233 chip, unused
and terminated.

This stuff is great fun, entertaining just long enough to go
"POOFTA". Then things get expensive.

It makes some sense that grounds were reversed or some such. But what I
can't quite figure out is why it only affected startup. If I start it up
and then plug in the serial line, all is well. Not to mention it seemed to
start when I upgraded SatPC32.

Anyway, using a USB dongle rather than the serial port right on the
computer seems to have solved the problem if not the mystery.

Thanks!

I use about 25 watts ERP (1 watt to a 16 element yagi) and can get in
full-quieting for a majority of each pass, though there are times that
I cannot get a solid signal in at that power level.

Falconsat-3 has had a software crash after ~850 days uptime, and we will
need to reload. Even though you might hear telemetry, the BBS and digipeater
will be off until we are complete. Please attempt no transmissions until we
release it back to general use. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Kuby,

I'm working AO-92 L/V mode with a 1W (on 1.2 GHz) Alinco
DJ-G7T and an old 5-element Comet CY-1205 Yagi on the HT's
antenna connector (with BNC-to-SMA adapter). The antenna
is rated at 11.0 dBi gain, and my ERP is around 7 to 8
watts. I have to be diligent with the orientation of the
antenna and the uplink tuning (5 kHz steps on the DJ-G7T),
but I have been making contacts on most L/V passes.

If I didn't already have the CY-1205 Yagi (it was also
sold in versions with a TNC connector - some of the 1.2
GHz radios in the late 80s and early 90s came with a TNC
connector), I'd probably look at building a 6- or 10-
element WA5VJB "Cheap Yagi" for 1.2 GHz. Kent Britain
wrote about these Yagis in CQ VHF about 10 years ago:

Kent also had measurements for a 4-element Yagi in that
article. The article claims 8 dBi gain for the 4-element
Yagi, about 10 dBi gain for the 6-element Yagi, and 13
dBi gain for the 10-element Yagi. WA5VJB's web site has
a document for 17-element 1.2 GHz Yagis, but these smaller
versions may be sufficient for working AO-92.

73!
