I ran across the FT-817ND replacement. At first I thought the FT-818 was
fake news.
After seeing it offered on the HRO and Gigaparts web site for pre sale I
guess its
real. Some improvements in battery size and the TCXO is now built in. The
TX power
was increased to 6W and I think aircraft and FM broadcast band added. I was
wondering
if anybody has seen the offical Yaesu broschure. The specs are on the HRO
and Gigaparts
site. I was kinda expecting a bit more of an upgrade after all these years.
Maybe like
Fusion capabilities or USB program and control. Is anybody going to run out
and buy it
when its supposed to go on sale in March.

From my point of view there is no improvement that is of interest to a
satellite operator.? I will keep my FT-817 and FT-817ND.

Hi all,

During a QSO with ZS4A at around 13:13 UTC yesterday AO-07 when suddenly
silent in spite the signal both side was very good and still in the middle
of the pass.

Mid-day today I tried it again on both modes during a overhead pass, still
silent. I will trying again on next pass today which is still a daylight one
but low ele of 4.8 deg. if bird OK it should work as normally I access as it
appears on horizon.

Has anyone access AO-07 after 13:13 UTC yesterday 24/02/2018?

Some more info on rotor failure, and my solution. I was using this rotor
with a small M2 Leo pack. I put it together from parts from several broken
5500's for $200 so I don't know it's history. I've done pretty well with the
5500's I've owned over the years. My first one was bought used in 1997 for
another $200, it was already 5 years old. It lasted till 2008 turning large
KML's, a 3 foot dish(taken down when AO-40 died), and a 55 L 1200 loop yagi.
My second one that is still up in NJ, had the loose set screw problem last
year. When I took it completely apart, fixed , and put fresh grease in, it
was showing no wear. It's been up 10 years and counting. So Yaesu really
doesn't owe me anything, I got a good deal on the RAS-1 so I hope it will be
my last AZ-EL rotor purchase, or maintenance issue . When I take the 5500
down and replace with the RAS-1 here, I then have spare parts for the 5500
in NJ...

Well it looks like my 5500 had a failure. I found it dead with a blown fuse
this morning. I'm now thinking that the transformer was the intermittent
problem that has now failed. As I have a 5500 up north also I'm thinking of
just buying a new AlfaSpid az el rotor and keeping the Yaesu for parts for
the 5500 at my NJ summer home. What AlfaSpid is anyone using? I see there
are at least 2 different ones available. All I need to turn is an M2 leo
pack, and a Comet CYA-1216E. Any rotor suggestions appreciated....

Must be dead rotator week, Thursday my elevation unit on the G-5500 decided
to stop at 10 degrees, showed fine on the controller thus pots fine.

Looks like the motor has burned out, thankfully a local guy had a spare
elevation unit so I've spent the weekend doing that.

Only downside is the wind chill is between -5c & -10c!

I'm thinking it's time to swap to spid as well, I've gone from living
inland in a big city to on the coast.

It's worth remembering that using too much power will flip the
satellite mode so when its silent its most likely downlinking on 10m.

If this happens a lot and there are only yourselves on the pass best
thing to do is reduce your output power. max should be no more than
100w ERP.

Peter,

Thanks for the input.

I use normally 5w into 10 db antenna with about 6 db feeder loss (70cm) at
all initial call on satellites. With AO-07 I need minimum of about 15W to go
through clear, sometimes more.

Just to state that it is not overpower causing the issue (hope fully not one).

Last pass at (max ele. 4.8 deg.) went through well.

I will continue to observe as something was definitely not ?normal?.

I agree, especially for the $200 dollars difference it cost over what I
paid for my last FT817ND. My first FT817 went up in smoke literally from
the finals doing their thing on a low battery. It not only took out the
finals, but the final board, and burnt the RF board under it as well. So
it wasn't repairable and the replacement(s) were over #300 dollars. Half
the price of a new one then. The old unit was 16 years old before it
died, so I can't complain (well I can, but it didn't help).

So, the finals and its board were removed and it is being used as a
receiver only unit with the other fully functional unit. I paid a little
over $600 so I just don't feel the new FT818 is worth the $200+ difference.

I am not sure when it may have started, but there is a 1/4-20 threaded
"hole" (actually 2) underneath the foam handle on my Arrow. I was able to
screw in a bolt from one side through to the other.

So if you have a tripod, you could replace the stock bolt on the quick
release part with a longer one and screw it in through both sides. I would
think you *could* get away with doing only one side, but I would attempt to
get both sides.
