As part of my plans to activate 43 grids this Summer, I will be operating
from EN37 26-31 July, holiday style.
Plan is to introduce father-in-law, George KE0GQX, to satellites and
roving.? Besides EN37, we will make a run up to EN38, and then a two day
excursion to activate EN47, EN48, EN57, and EN58.
I will post a schedule on AMSAT-BB as we get closer. In addition, daily
updates will be posted to my Twitter account (viewable online for those
without a twitter account at https://twitter.com/KE4ALabama).?
All QSOs will be uploaded to LOTW upon my return, with my call sign KE4AL
(no /P, /R, /5, etc.).? LOTW uploads already include the grid I worked from,
so there's not need for any additional suffix.?
For those who prefer a QSL card, my mailing address is good on QRZ.com.? No
postage required, but please include a self-addressed envelope to ensure I
do not mess up your address.
(For those keeping count, this is only 6 of the 43 Summer Grids.?
Announcement of other trips will be coming out shortly.)

Hello all,

I'm trying out my 4 element 70cm LFA and (finally) received some decent
signals from Athenoxat-1 (437.485 MHz). I had some good passes for
Yubileiny RS-30 in the last couple of days, but I didn't observe
anything. So, questions:

1) is RS-30 dead or still alive?

2) if alive, on which frequency is the morse code beacon active 435.215
or 435.315?

3) what mode should I use then: FMN or pure CW.

I would like to know if anybody has observed RS-30 recently. On the web
I can't find any recent observations. Thank you.

Hi Hans -- one place to look is the SatNOGS project
(https://satnogs.org). If you haven't come across it before, it's an
open-source network of satellite ground stations. There are stations
around the world, and a large database of the observations they've
taken.

Just to run through how I tracked down observations for RS-30:

- I went to https://db.satnogs.org and searched for "RS-30" and got to
this page: https://db.satnogs.org/satellite/32953/

- I clicked the link to "SatNOGS Network Observati}ons":
https://db.satnogs.org/satellite/32953/

- That shows a lot of failed observations (in red), so I clicked on
the red "X" button underneath "Status" to filter them out. (I mention
this because it seems a little counter-intuitive to me.)

- That left this list of observations marked "Good":
https://network.satnogs.org/observations/?future=1&good=1&bad=0&unvetted=1&fai
led=1&norad=32953&observer=&station=

- For each of those, you can visit the individual observation page and
see the waterfall, and listen to the original recordings. There's one
from March and one from April.

Now, about those observations...looking at the waterfall, I don't see
any sign of CW in them. Observations are marked good or bad by the
person who scheduled them, and occasionally mistakes are made.
However, you may want to listen to the audio -- I have had
observations where CW was faintly audible, even if it didn't show up
in the waterfall.

As for whether it's alive -- doesn't look good so far :-( but I'll let
folks who know more give a more definitive answer.

Hope that helps!

73,
Hugh

   Hi, Hans,

The last record of Yubileiny-1 RS-30 CW telemetry I done was on
november 12th 2012. It died sometime in november 2012 and the CW beacon
was on 435.315 MHz and was pure CW A1. 435.215 MHz was used by the
digital telemetry downlink (with the russian Doka-B ground stations).
But anyway, I listen from time to time to the frequencies of the missing
birds, just in case... My russian favorite was Mozhyets-4 RS-22. :-)
and my favorite chinese Xiwang-1 (Hope-1, HO-68)my favorite, which is
still possible to hear from time to time when solar panels are under the
sun (like AO-7).

Hans, there are a lot of others satellites sending CW telemetry on 70 cm.

I've been reporting my observations on the AMSAT Live OSCAR Satellite Status
page. For the FM and linear satellites, it's a no-brainer:? if I hear live
traffic on the bird, or if I hear myself being transponded, then clearly
"Uplink and Downlink Active" is appropriate.?

However, for the packet satellites, what's the criteria for reporting the
uplink as active? The past two days, I've received continuous streams of
non-APRS packets from FalconSat-3 on two passes, but despite manually
sending my beacons many times on each pass, I don't get digipeated (at least
no iGate seems to be picking up the traffic) and I don't receive any APRS
packets from anyone else.
? My TH-D72A is properly configured per Patrick WD9EWK's excellent tutorial,
and I've made QSOs earlier in the week with the radio in the same
configuration it's in now. The only difference seems to be that I'm working
FS-3 much earlier in the day, on a weekday, than I have in the past.?I'm
just using a TH-D72A, so for all I know, a dozen ops are having a grand ol'
time on the BBS.?

I've been reporting these passes as "Downlink Only." Is that appropriate? I
seem to be the only one this week who reported FalconSat-3 as anything but
open for business. I'm planning to try one or more passes later today.?

Hello Hugh and Jean-Pierre,

Thanks for pointing out SatNOGS to me. I'm new to sats and didn't
realize that SatNOGS had this capability. I'll check it out.

So it seems RS-30 is dead. I checked the SatNOGS recordings, but I
couldn't detect any CW. A pity, 'cause back in 2009 it was one of the
first sat signals I received on my HT with a simple antenna.

I asked this question before on this list, but what other sats do have
reliable and reasonably strong beacons (in morse code)? Any suggestions
are welcome. Cheers.

Hi Ryan, the PBBS on FS-3 is working great. You?re right, it?s hard to see
if it?s working on APRS?though working full duplex you should copy yourself
right?

I checked my log files and confirm that the digipeater is ON. Also, I
looked at the last couple KISS log files and can?t see your call. Double
check things is my suggestion. ??

I suggest you report as uplink and downlink active, unless you are positive
that uplinks aren?t working; recently they have been from my QTH.

Ryan,

When I cannot get digipeated on FS-3, and see no evidence of APRS
digipeats from other ground stations, I also put "downlink only". So
at least you are not alone.

One way to answer that would be to look at the following page and search
for "CW". Then, check to see if the status shows "ACTIVE".

Hi Ryan!

I'm with you on how to report on the AMSAT status page. If I
don't see my packets being digipeated when using my TH-D72
or TM-D710, I mark my reports as "Downlink Only". If I see
my packets being digipeated, or I see other stations using
the digipeater, I'll go with "Uplink and Downlink Active".

As for the pass times, they gradually move earlier in the
day. I have what should be some decent passes this
afternoon, and I hope to work one or two of them from the
Prescott Hamfest in north-central Arizona later with my
TH-D72 & Elk - same setup I used last week, when I worked
you via FalconSat-3.

If you find errors or omissions. please contact me off-list
at <mycall>@<??????>.com and I'll revise the announcement.

This list was developed by comparing the ARRL .pdf
listings for May 1, 2018 and June May 1, 2018. It's a visual
comparison so omissions are possible. Apologies if your
call was not mentioned. Thanks to all those who are
roving to grids that are rarely on the birds. They are
doing most of the work!

EDITORIAL: Excuse the bandwidth.

I took a little detour from chasing grids to try FT8 on 6 meters.
What amazed me was the quickness of QSLs on LoTW, often finding
the QSL awaiting when I uploaded my QSO. Why are the FT8-ers so
fast compared with my experience on satellites. My guess is that
FT8 QSOs are done with computer software with logging capability.
But that can't be the entire reason. Most of our wonderful rovers
are extremely fast getting their audio recording logs uploaded to
LoTW. So motivation has to be part of the solution.

Satellites can be worked without computer assistance, but Doppler
control, pass prediction and logging make the activity more
enjoyable for me. Some of the rovers should publish their
procedure for logging to LoTW. Most logging programs will upload
to LoTW. Even the TQSL program for LoTW handles hand-input
parameters. And LoTW is the easiest way to apply for ARRL Awards.

Perhaps my disappointment after working a needed grid and not
getting an LoTW QSL can be relieved.

 Hi, Mark.?

I do not receive any visible notification of receiving my own packets on the
TH-D72A despite operating full duplex. My understanding is that Patrick
WD9EWK has previously reported this is a limitation of the TH-D72A that is
not shared by the TH-D74A. I only go by the real-time readout on the home
screen, the stored list of decoded APRS packets ("LIST"), and the stored
list ("MSG") of received APRS messages.?I have not inspected log files that
might be stored on the radio.?

I sent my beacon several times during each of the 0030Z and 1420Z passes on
Thu 5/31, at 5W through an Arrow on the first pass and an Elk on the second.
?I verified the APRS settings before and after each pass.??I was digipeated
on three separate passes on Mon 5/28, and had QSOs over the weekend, with
those same settings on the same radio with the same antennas and cables.?

I'm hesitant to report the uplink as active unless the undecoded packets I
receive are evidence that the uplink is active. On every pass I receive
undecoded packets from PFS3-1 and PFS3-11, and occasionally PFS3-12. Does
one or more of those SSIDs indicate that an operator had successfully
uplinked to the satellite on that pass? I read the status packets
description document and nothing stood out to me as being indicative of an
uplink.?

Hi Ryan, the PBBS on FS-3 is working great.? You?re right, it?s hard to see
if it?s working on APRS?though working full duplex you should copy yourself
right? ??
I checked my log files and confirm that the digipeater is ON.? Also, I
looked at the last couple KISS log files and can?t see your call. Double
check things is my suggestion. ??
I suggest you report as uplink and downlink active, unless you are positive
that uplinks aren?t working; recently they have been from my QTH.?

In proxy window I add my call anc coordinates, saved, succesfully updated
orbit information and start the proxy but serve is not connected as well
port 3 and 4
Front end dslwp rx rtl works but only BJ1SN? B0 and B1, no way to see BJ1SM

 Hi OMs,

We are planning two tests for UHF of DSLWP-B, from 31 May 16:00 UTC to 31
May 18:00 UTC, and from 1 Jun 02:00 UTC to 1 Jun 04:00 UTC.

We will change the mode of the transmitters to 250 bps GMSK and JT4G on
435.4 MHz (GMSK every 5 min, JT4G every 10 min, JT4G has higher priority),
and 250 bps GMSK on 436.4 MHz (every 5 min). Corresponding demod grcs should
be used.

Some more tests are planned on Jun 3, and detailed time TBD.

The temperature of onboard batteries is a little higher than expected,
that's why UHF is not always on.
