I read this morning about your trip and I promptly forgot about it. But as
I am riding along route 66, I met some nice car with power ride signs, and
all came to my mind. I have only a TH-F7 with me, which I choose over the
TH-D7 as it has ssb hf reception (and is way smaller).
I will try to follow your schedule. What is your twitter account?
And by the way, which prefix letter should I add to my Italian callsign?
As far as I can understand, being currently in NM my callsign should be
IZ2QYZ/K5

It has been dropping into Safe Mode at the end of eclipses for a little
while now. It's a planned feature to protect the batteries from excessive
discharge.

Hello all,

I've been using (the most amazing) http://vhf.pi5fts.nl/ WebSDR to listen to
passes on the other side of the globe.

I noticed that Fox-1A was announcing "Safe Mode" with what sounds like
9600 bps telemetry. Is this normal?

I didn't catch the voice announcement, but I do have a WAV file of the
telemetry.

Hi Folks,

Is anyone using one of these on the FM Sats?
If so how well does it perform?
It appears to pretty much the same as the KG-UV9D but without the extra
wideband receiver ranges.

It seems to be able to do full duplex.

He reviews a lot of the Chinese radios and posts his results on the QRZ.com
forums. I think the consensus is they work okay without desense in V/u on
the Fox birds but not in U/v with SO-50.

Hi Terry!

The KG-UV8D can work the AMSAT Fox-1 satellites with
70cm uplinks full-duplex, but not do full-duplex on
SO-50 with its 2m uplink. Even though the KG-UV9D has
a receiver with much more coverage than the KG-UV8D,
I found that the KG-UV9D (this also includes the
KG-UV9D Plus) has a better and cleaner receiver for
FM satellite downlinks than any variant of the
KG-UV8D. I have not tried any of the new dual-band
Chinese-made FM/DMR HTs, but for the rest of the
crop of dual-band HTs from China I think the KG-UV9D
(any variant) is probably still the best performer
for FM satellite work.

John KG4AKV already mentioned a couple of links where
I wrote about the KG-UV8D on AO-85. I also wrote about
it on this mailing list in late 2015 around the time
AO-85's launch. My comments about these Wouxun HTs,
along with two other Chinese-made HTs, appeared on
this list. A summary, which has links to the messages
covering each radio I tried, can be found at:

http://amsat.org/pipermail/amsat-bb/2015-December/056269.html

After seeing that the KG-UV9D performed better than the
KG-UV8D, I sold the KG-UV8D. I still have the KG-UV9D,
and periodically use it for FM satellite work.

Should you go with either Wouxun HT, be aware that the
radios always have a small current draw - even when
powered off. If you don't use the radio all the time,
it would be advisable to either remove the battery from
the back of the radio, or put a piece of paper between
the battery pack and the contacts on the back of the
radio. This will ensure the pack remains charged and
ready to go, instead of possibly ending up with a dead
battery pack at the same time you want to work a
satellite pass, or use a repeater.

Good luck, and 73!

I am confused, which is not an uncommon thing. I have been wanting to try
and figure out how to work Falxonsat-3 via my Kenwood D72a. I read Pat
Stoddard's AMSAT Journal article but he does not do a step by step per se.
I also read KB6IGK and WD9EWKs other article on the same subject. Mention
is made on setting "User phrases". Looking at several different D72 manuals,
I cannot for the life of me, see how one selects the phrase to use and how
that gets into the string that is sent. I see the ability to set several
phrases from inside RT systems D72 menu program (Not sure how those get
entered in manual radio programming), nor do I see any instructions for
sending). I watched a YouTube video of a guy making Falconst APRS contacts,
but no explanation on how he got the phrases out.

Tom,

When you are in the screen to send a message to a
call sign, you press the F key to bring up the list
of "phrases" (stored messages). Then you scroll up
or down using either the round button or VFO knob
to highlight the message you want, then press the
right side of the round button. This puts the phrase
into the message text line. If you have not stored
any of these messages, either using the keypad or
the Kenwood software, the F key won't bring anything
up while you are trying to compose a message.

The printed manual in the TH-D72A box doesn't address
these messages. You have to either use the larger manual
on the CD, or you can download the larger manual from
Kenwood:

http://manual.kenwood.com/files/4ff15b9c0988f.pdf

I found the phrases covered on page 65 of this 75-page
PDF. If printed out, it would be on page 22 of the APRS
section of the manual.

I apologize if you were hoping for a complete step-by-
step instruction in my FalconSat-3 article that was in
a recent AMSAT Journal. Had I done that, the article
would have been much longer, and parts of it would read
like a Kenwood manual. I hope that this message, taken
with the TH-D72's manuals and what you have already
read, helps you get set up to exchange messages via
FalconSat-3 soon.

73!

Are you able to get to the point where you have a blank message open and
ready to accept input? If so, you hit F then the number of the message (1
through 8) to paste in the contents of that Phrase at the current location
of the cursor. You store the phrases in the APRS menu item 3P0 ("Phrases")

Tom,

With a message open and your cursor in the text field, press F(funtion key)
that will pull up your list of user phrases that you have previously saved.
Press the number of the phrase you wish to insert and it will paste it into
the message text. Add anything else you want to the message (within
character limits) and send. Easy least.

Personally I have these phrases stored, which are enough to cover a packet
QSO:

1: CQ De K7TEJ DM34
2: K7TEJ DM33 R QSL?
3: K7TEJ 73!

I actually have the same set saved with different grids I operate from and a
set with a field day exchange.

Hope this helps

Scott,

All corrected this side with the help of Wei & Dimitry (thanks to them),
just stupid things like proxy not running, wrong file path in Program
Tracking CC etc?

About the JT4: I don?t see it on the GNU drop down it spite it is in the
Examples directory.
