Hi Tom!

FalconSat-3 takes a little more to set up on a D72, but it
is currently our only orbiting digipeater on 24/7. NO-84
is occasionally on, and maybe we can hope for its batteries
to be charged enough so a command station can turn the
digipeater on for Field Day weekend.

If you have some experience with exchanging messages through
a digipeater, packet may actually be the easiest way to get
a satellite QSO and the 100-point bonus under the ARRL rules.
For Field Day, I will put both my Field Day exchange (normally
1B AZ) and my grid in the messages. I have worked stations
on Field Day weekend who are only interested in grids, and I
am usually not in my home grid DM43 for Field Day.

Once you get your radio set up, go ahead and try it on some
passes before Field Day - the sooner, the better. :-) There
have been some stations on from California like AI6DO and
KB6LTY regularly, and KB6IGK is occasionally on from Texas.
I was on over the last weekend, from a hamfest on Friday
and at home Sunday. We can help get you going with some
QSOs in advance of Field Day.

73!

The latest version of demod_dslwp_gmsk_b0_250bps_0.5_coherent.grc from
https://github.com/bg2bhc/gr-dslwp includes blocks in the upper-right
corner that may be disabled by default. If enabled, the "Band Pass
Filter", "Complex to Real", & "Audio Sink" blocks will make demodulated
audio available to your system.

(If using the Live CD version, I don't know if these blocks are available
-- I can only speak to the software running on a dedicated system)

>From there, much like a Virtual Audio Cable in Windows, you would use Pulse
Audio (pavucontrol) to route that audio OUT to the WSJTx application
running on your system.

As I mentioned before, my system is not nearly powerful enough to handle
all that processing in addition to what is required to run the DSLWP
front-end and decoder flowgraphs in GNU Radio. But if your system IS
powerful enough, that is one way to provide WSJTx with the "B0" audio from
435.400 in hopes that it might decode some JT4G!

Please note that Pulse Audio and WSJTx are not necessarily installed by
default on any given linux system. So, they would have to be installed to
be available to you.

Quick progress report.

After deleting KB4103718 and resetting the rotor position change to 3
degrees, I have not seen a stall in a week. I will open that out a degree
at a time, and see what if anything happens.

<Erich,
<
<So far the stalls have occurred in the middle of the night. One was
showing
<the elevation at 4 degrees, with the target at 0. The Labjack server was
<indicating a down command. I closed and restarted SatPC32 and when I
<selected Park, it dropped to 0 and the desired azimuth. The second time
was
<an azimuth problem, with a large difference between the commanded and

<
<There are two changes that I know of. I recently changed the rotor
position
<change window from 3 degrees to 10 degree to reduce wear, as that is close
<enough for LEOs. I have reset that to 3 degrees to remove the variable.
<
<Mark, G0MGX suggested that I look at KB4103718, which has been reported to

Scott,

Many thanks for the hint I will try this evening as at work presently.

FYI:

I am using a dedicated test-PC for the Live CD presently (as very new to
Ubuntu/GNU and already break it a few times in the past week, learning the
hard way Hi!), therefore if I can output the audio to my station PC it will
be perfect for testing.

Will use the test-PC for the Live CD, SDR and Doppler correction and the
shack PC for FT4G decoding and rotor control. I already have WJST-X,
PCSAT32/SuM for antenna control, GPS clock & other decoders running it
simultaneously without issue.

Will feedback on the BB.

As a follow-up, if the satellite has an IHU reset while in auto safe mode,
it reboots to safe mode. This apparently happened last night or yesterday. I
commanded it back to Transponder mode this morning.

It has been dropping into Safe Mode at the end of eclipses for a little
while now. It's a planned feature to protect the batteries from excessive
discharge.

Hello all,

I've been using (the most amazing) http://vhf.pi5fts.nl/ WebSDR to listen to
passes on the other side of the globe.

I noticed that Fox-1A was announcing "Safe Mode" with what sounds like
9600 bps telemetry. Is this normal?

I didn't catch the voice announcement, but I do have a WAV file of the
telemetry.

If it helps, you can see me using user phrases with the ISS digipeater in

Out of curiosity, is there a state diagram anywhere that is publicly
available for any or all of the Fox Series, showing the various
potential modes and the causes for state transition?? I'm mainly
interested in using it (or them if there are variants available) as an
introductory teaching/training tool for students getting into cubesat
development and writing code for flight computers.? I've got my own made
up versions of what I might guess an overall state diagram might look
like and the various causes of state transition for a cubesat (IHU
reset, ground command, bus/battery voltage dropping below thresholds,
etc.), but it would be much better if I could show a real world example.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Don!

The web page Andrew KE8FZT is a great resource for setting up
a D72 for FalconSat-3's digipeater. I referenced his site in
my AMSAT Journal article, as he had the same settings I used
when I got started with this satellite - and he already had
screenshots from the radio. Why reinvent the proverbial
wheel? :-)

The easiest way to set up a D72 for FalconSat-3's digipeater
is probably with the Kenwood MCP-4A software and COM port
driver on a Windows PC. Then you aren't having to go through
the menus on a small screen, and you don't have to enter
messages and text like you would enter an SMS message on a
flip-phone (multiple presses of a key to get a particular
character). All of this *can* be done with the D72's front
panel, but there is a better way through the software.

73!
