I thought I had found the problem with my old 5400 EL rotor when I
discovered shorted wires at the terminal due to those awful old screw type
terminals. Unfortunately after installing it the summer QTH I found that EL
rotation worked only in one direction. I could use some help trouble
shooting this as it could be in the control box or at the rotor and I have
no manual with me. It could be that I'm off the air this summer in terms of
satellite operation.

Mine arrived in the mail today and was fine except for the usual USPS
mangling.

Or you can record .wav of pass and upload it somewhere public and
others try to decode it.

I have made numerous AO-85, 91, 92, and SO-50 contacts from my truck, mostly
while stationary due to the desire to log the contacts, with a 25 year old
Kenwood TM-733a (~25 watts) and a dual-band antenna on the roof of the
truck. Even a simple 2m quarter-wave works fine and offers a decent match on
435 MHz.

The feature that helps the most is the radio's full duplex capability. When
I hear my own voice on the downlink frequency I know I'm hitting the bird.

I am hoping to get into mobile satellite operations soon, and at times I
will be able to operate portable with a dualband yagi antenna. . Other
times, though, I will be on family trips and unable to stop for satellite
passes, so would have to operate while in motion. Are AO91, AO91, and the
XW-2 satellites able to be worked using a 1/4 wave or 5/8 wave dualband
mobile whip antenna?

Roland,

Congratulations.

I also have been trying again last night without success, all Ok in the
station, software etc... just too much loss in the feeder system and no
enough antenna gain.

Hi Dave,

That is great to know. Sounds like it would work. I wonder if a 1/4 wave
antenna might be better than a 5/8 wave as it might have some higher lobes
as well and cover more of the pass. Does anyone know about this?

Would you want higher lobes? It seems like there is more db loss closer to
the horizon and much less as you get overhead. That was my first thought,
but it is just a guess, I am interested to hear what people with more
education and experience have to say. Interesting topic thanks for
bringing it up John.

I have a couple TM 733 A's. They are full duplex and I have also made
contact with them in the vehicle on a dual band antenna. They're still
around sometimes on eBay and I think is one of the best radios that Kenwood
ever made.

the Kenwood th 7 9 handheld portable 5 watt is also full duplex. In fact you
can turn it into a repeater cross band repeater and hanging from a tree and
have a real nice portable repeater system.

When Doug Wheelock KB5BOC was on the ISS, I tried many times to work him
when using a 5/8 whip on the car but with no success. I then changed to a
1/4-wave whip and worked him first call. I attributed this to the fact that
with a 5/8 the major lobe is towards the horizon whereas a 1/4-wave has a
lobe tilted further upwards.

Hi Dave,

That is great to know. Sounds like it would work. I wonder if a 1/4 wave
antenna might be better than a 5/8 wave as it might have some higher lobes
as well and cover more of the pass. Does anyone know about this?
