About fireworks: during first ARISS contact in mission Horizon, last week,
Gerst was asked about fireworks at 31.12 (question #6). A German friend
transladed for me: Alex never went on ISS during last eve night, but when he
flies over Italy in summer he can see fireworks in touristic areas.

during ARISS contacts. I would estimate that over 20,000 questions have been
asked over the years and this doesn?t include SAREX contacts. Questions
could possibly be reproduced in that questions are written out and submitted
in advance of the contact. Remember though, not all questions are answered
by end of contact. I believe ARISS Ops maintain an historical archive of the
documentation of each contact including questions (not sure about Russian
contacts). The downside is that the same is not true about the answers. The
answers are off the cuff by the astronauts. So unless one could get a
recording of the contacts or a transcript that may have been reported, it
would be difficult to reconstruct the full conversations over the years.
Where as most contacts have been recorded in some form there is not a
central repository for them. Many recordings would have been done by the
school or individuals associated with
the contacts. Gathering these would be a rather daunting task. I have
always wanted to parse through the information to discover the most asked
questions, or class the questions into categories. For example I have
noticed there are many what?s it like or how?s it different to live in space
questions. Many ask questions about the astronauts contingency if things go
wrong. What do you miss most about earth or home. Another is how do you
prepare or what classes should I take or what path should I take to become
an astronaut. I also am curious about similar questions asked different
astronauts that receive conflicting answers (or an astronaut conflicting
him/herself during different contacts.) 73, EMike EMike McCardel, AA8EM

I was wanting to describe to some folks I am doing a satellite demonstration
for next week, about how some satellites have stable sun-synchronous orbits
while others process earlier each day. The old DOS program, InstantTrack,
that most likely will not work under the Windows 10/64 bit world had a nice
display of this behavior, Are there any recommendations for a more modern
application that will do the same type of thing? If you are not familiar
with what I am talking about, look at page SO-3 in the current "Getting
Started." book from AMSAT (As well as on earlier pages) to see what I am
looking for. A web search shows that it should be in the AMSAT software
archives but the page link for that particular software is broken. It is a
nice planning utility, especially for birds that do change times each day.

There was a discussion on the QRZ satellite forum a couple of weeks ago
involving a method to get the DOS based STSPlus running on Win10. You'll
find instructions how to install DOSBox ... once that is installed perhaps
you can perhaps run InstantTrack.

https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/short-guide-on-how-to-install-stspl

or try http://tinyurl.com/QRZ-Forum-DosBox if the long URL got wiped out by
the mailer.

If you have InstantTrack and it worked for your needs, you could try
running it in DOSBox. It's a free DOS emulator.
I recently managed to get STSPlus working in DOSBox but I don't have an
InstantTrack license or the files for it.

Best wishes,

Hi!

Yes, I have been running 3 different DOS-based tracking programs
(InstantTrack, STS Plus, PREDICT) in DOSBox running on a 64-bit
Windows 7 laptop, 32- and 64-bit Windows 10 laptops, and a 64-bit
Linux (Fedora 28) laptop. I had purchased InstantTrack many years
ago, had PREDICT on the Win7 laptop, and with the recent QRZ
discussions decided to try STS Plus. All seem to work fine, and
with updated keps are just as accurate as the more modern programs
like SatPC32 and Gpredict I also use.

Once I had my folder/directory set up for DOSBox, I copied it off,
and can put that on other systems running DOSBox. DOSBox appears
to report its version as 5.00, if that matters for programs you
may want to run in that environment.

BTW InstantTrack appears to remain available for purchase, but not
from AMSAT anymore. InstantTrack's web page is:

http://mustbeart.com/software/it/index.html

and the link for purchasing it:

http://www.swreg.org/com/storefront/47805/product/478051

I had version 1.50, made a copy of that installation, and applied
the version 1.55 beta update. Both the original 1.50 install and
the upgraded 1.55 install work fine in DOSBox.

Brad,

Compared to the ISS and even FalconSat-3, NO-84's digipeater is
a weaker signal. It transmits on 145.825 MHz at only 350mw:

http://aprs.org/psat.html

NO-84 can be tough to hear, and sometimes packets you can hear
won't be decoded by radios/TNCs/software. With either of my Kenwood
HTs (TH-D72, TH-D74) and Elk log periodic, I can adjust my antenna
so I can do a good job working those passes. It worked well during
Field Day, as long as I paid attention to the orientation of my
antenna (a bit of twisting initially, then no problems for the rest
of those passes).

Thanks all. I will say that the pages for the InstantTrack software really
present no valid link that I can see (Although I will admit to not seeing
too good to download anything). I did know about DOSBox so reinstalled it
on this new computer. Since InstaantTrack is a DOS program and thus
probably lives in one single folder, can someone .ZIP it and send it to me
off list?

I

does anything like that, or for that matter other programs. All

All,

Great ideas!

While we have not publicized it, ARISS already has something in the works on
this. We hope to make this public in the near future.

Thanks to all for your ideas and suggestions!

Also, don't forget we have a big fundraising initiative underway to improve
the radios systems on ISS. For more details, go to the donate button on the
ARISS web site: www.ariss.org <http://www.ariss.org> . (You don't have to
donate to see what we are talking about.

About ARISS:

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative
venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that
support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States,
sponsors are the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the Radio Amateur
Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), Center for the Advancement of Science in
Space (CASIS) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The
primary goal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics by organizing scheduled contacts
via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and students in
classrooms or informal education venues. With the help of experienced
amateur radio volunteers, ISS crews speak directly with large audiences in a
variety of public forums. Before and during these radio contacts, students,
teachers, parents, and communities learn about space, space technologies,
and amateur radio. For more information, see <http://www.ariss.org/>

>>Thank you Ted, this is a great question since we all have one time or
another wondered how things are from up there !??

>>On a side note, I have been wondering about an "Almanac" page on the
website that would list all the questions that have ever been asked >>and
their answers from the ISS crew.? Credits would be given to the first
person/child asking the question, and for every crew member >>answering the
question.? If different answers were given for any said question, it would
just add that much more flavor.? There would be no >>need for any heavy
lifting work as in sorting or grouping these, since it would be easy to
search for words/terms on the web page.? Maybe it >>would lead to some very
interesting S.T.E.M. discussions.?

>>Happy 4th !!
