Happy 4th everyone. My XYL ordered me a Yaesu FT2DR for my birthday.
Apparently, all of the whining I've been doing pertaining to not being able
to work the 9600 baud APRS gave her an idea for me. Question....is anyone
using the 2DR for this? How do you like the 2DR if you do???

I tried it once and I was able to receive several packets, one of which was
mine, so I assume I got digipeated successfully.
The APRS interface is not the most straight forward (especially composing
messages) but as long as you are not in a rush it is doable.
The radio has a dedicated APRS manual that you can download. Some of the
functionality and UI is unintuitive for APRS (unlike the rest of the menus)
and absolutely requires reading the manual to do.

Hello All,

Is anyone using the Kenwood TM-V71A for Satellite work?

I am looking for a portable station for field operations and, looking at the
spec?s this radio seems to fit the bill.

Anything I should know about it?

Based upon this forum, I purchased the Kenwood TS-2000 for a base station,
and I LOVE it!

If you can swing a little extra, consider getting the TM-D710G. It
will allow operation on the APRS satellites (currently NO-84 and FS-3,
but soon - hopefully, also PSAT-2 and Birds-2).

I use a D710 as my "home base", and love it. Nice being able to
crank it up to 50 watts to get sub 10? contacts THROUGH TREES in my
backyard (got one yesterday with K2MTS, and the sat was at about 5?
though my ash trees in my backyard). Normally I operate at 10w,
which is more than enough to get all the FM voice sats, including
AO-85, without having to do any "arrow flipping". Adjust for best
downlink only.

I am new to TS-2000 and have forgotten almost all I ever knew about packet.

I am currently trying to set up UISS and UZ7HO apps. I have these working
on the IC-7100.

On the TS-2000, when I plug the 13 pin plug into acc 2, the rig no longer
puts out audio. If I remove the plug, speaker audio returns.

What am I missing?

I would also like to hear from anyone successfully using packet on the
TS-2000 - either with built-in TNC or software TNC.

Thanks,
Butch K8KO

Hi Peter!

I have the TM-V71A and enjoy it greatly. Besides normal FM voice ops, the
9600-capable data port on the back gets used a lot with data modes to/from
my computer. Of course it does a great job on 1200 packet as well.

It is my main FM sat rig. Love it. Works great getting into AO-85 which is
a little deaf. I built a body harness thingy for it:

https://spacecomms.wordpress.com/mobile-radio-body-support/

I agree that the TM-D710GA is probably better if you can afford it, for the
APRS sats. I don't think it would fit my body harness set up though.

I Peter, I have used the TM-V71A as portable with my ARROW II, works, great
for SATs.
also have one as base station and mobile. and use it for terrestrial packet.
it puts out a fixed level voltage frm the dataport for packet so be sure if
you use with a TNC it will operate at the levels of the radio.(9600 bd).
its a great easy-to-program on-the-fly radio.

Sorry, I am just now reading about the AO-7 orbit "count turn over" question.

Assuming a 99,999 orbit turn over as calculated by Space-Track:

Yes, this will be the second time the data has exceeded the 99,999 orbit
count limit in the SpaceTrack TLEs. Just a short history:
AO-7 was launched on November 15, 1974. AO-7 became non-operational mid 1981
(after 7 years) due to battery failure. In 2002, one of the shorted
batteries became open and AO-7 could then be powered without the battery by
its solar panels when in sunlight.
The AMSAT digital KEPs distribution system started operation sometime in
1991 with Dick Campbell (N3FKV) as Orbital Data Manager. At that time AO-7
had already gone silent due to the battery short in 1981. When I was handed
the KEP distribution baton in 1993, AO-7 had been silent for about 12 years
and was NOT in the KEP distribution list. But, due to loss of that battery
short sometime before June 20, 2002, it came back! I first added AO-7 back
in the KEPs on June 20, 2002 after 21 years of being silent. The orbit
count, at that point, was 26,363 orbits. This indicates that AO-7 had
already crossed its first 99,999 orbit "count turn over" sometime while it
was out of service. Currently, we are at 99,696 orbits and counting on July
6, 2018.

Yes, nothing will happen after the orbit "count turn over" (like Y2K - HI).
As previously noted, most if not all tracking programs do not use the orbit
number data for anything. Maybe display only??? Note: The orbit count is
calculated by Space-Track and is not an actual count of orbits completed. It
is an indicating number that excludes many factors (particularly orbit
drag). Alan (W4SCA) is right, it is just an odometer giving an indication,
not an exact data point. And NOT as accurate as the odometer in your car.

And yes, what an amazing satellite and a great testimony to its builders!
AO-7, the little satellite that could!

I think a 200,000 orbit celebration is warranted!

What should we do?

I ran a simulation on my cell phone app HamSat.
I know it isn?t perfect. I found that orbits rolled over from 99999 to
100000 at 04:13:28 EDT (091228 UTC). The resultant map shows it over
Mongolia. So, I?m just letting my curiosity run rampant and thinking out
loud. Considering that it?s period has changed over time, what constitutes
an orbit? How does the software account for that?
