I just wanted to get a few test results? to be sure that CAT control
works with the FT-991 / FT-991A, before I replace the previous setup files.

Just wanted to add that smart-phones are pretty handy audio recorders.? So,
if you plan to do everything by hand, I recommend using the iPhone for both
the tracking app as well as a audio recording app.??
I use AmsatDroid and EasyVoiceRecorder on an old discarded smart-phone.? A
simple audio splitter cable I made helps records the downlink audio

I use an FT-897 for uplink, an FT-817 for downlink, and an Arrow -- similar
to your situation.
May I suggest that you consider trying it out manually first without CAT
control. It is fairly straightforward -- with some practice -- to learn how
to manually adjust for Doppler. And, since you use the FT-897, it has the
spotting function that I find handy from time to time and that I found
especially handy while learning to tune Doppler manually.
As for the Arrow, a tripod is a great way to start but you will find that
most of the very active operators hold it by hand. The chief reason for this
is to be able to control the axial rotation -- some tripods can also do this
but many don't. You really need to be able to quickly rotate the Arrow on
its axis to maximize downlink signals -- like flicking your wrist.
Lastly, consider using an inline MP3 recorder so that logging takes less
effort during operation. Since you have separate radios, you will be able to
hear (and record) your downlink just fine.
So, to the point of being as portable as possible: imagine me grabbing
iPhone (for GoSatWatch), MP3 Recorder, iPod headset, extra male-to-male
audio cable, Yaesu mic, FT-897, and FT-817 and racing through the house to
the garage. While I wait for the garage door to open I grab the Arrow. I set
up everything on a flat surface outside -- talk to Patrick WD9EWK about the
special features offered by pink trash bins -- and track the Arrow by hand.
So much fun!

Hello All,
Does anyone have a (satellite) frequency build for the Kenwood TS-2000, that
they would be willing to share?
I purchased the TS-2000 in late May and love it on HF. I am now ready to
start using it for ham sat?s (ssb & FM) and would like to save myself from
figuring out each and every satellite.
I also purchased the KRS-2000-USB programming software and cable for the
radio.
As you can tell I am completely new at this!

This week I have been working with a group of teachers at ARRL headquarters
studying amateur radio and remote sensing. Part of my agenda is to decode
satellite telemetry, and of course, make a QSO if possible. Thank you to
all of the hams yesterday and today that made it possible for everyone in
my group to make their first SAT QSOs, and in one case, her first (and
second) QSO ever---and it was on the birds. They are grinning from ear to
ear!

I was hoping to get a partial decode on the camera test this am, but
because it was a low pass (6deg) for me, the stronger signal from CAS-4B
(also overhead at the time) high speed telemetry signal captured the
telem decoder. Is there a way to prevent these stronger signals from
over-powering the telem decoder AO-92 target frequency? (Don't read this
as a complaint as having too many satellites)

Hello grid chasers,
I am taking the wife on a drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway today towards
Roanoke. I am aware that a few folks on the West Coast are in need of grid
FM07, so I will be taking along my sat gear and attempting to make the FO-29
mid continent pass at 0124z. (evening of July 12th local, which is July 13th
UTC) I will try below the middle of the pass band, unless there is QRM, etc.
and then I will move above. Hopefully, things will be favorable.I may also
try some XW birds or even the earlier eastern FO-29, but all will be subject
to the whims of the wife and how events transpire. =^)
Unfortunately, there is no convenient FM pass around that time... there is
an SO-50 pass several hours earlier, but I read that there are some
construction delays on the parkway (one lane sections) near Roanoke and I
have my doubts that we will make it in time. If we do, I will try to get on.
As for an FM pass afterwards, this is just a day trip and can't stay too
late, we will be after midnight getting home as it is. I hope the FM only
gangwill forgive me and overlook it. This is just the luck of the timing
fitting in a pass or two on a day trip with the wifey... I hope everyone
understands.
I will bring my twitter tablet along, but will only have connectivity if

tweet from my ancient flip phone, but remember I won't be able read any
replies until later. No APRS tracking either this trip, for same reason.

Nice problem, usually, to have a crowded sky. ;) That is a tough geometry. I
had a similar problem with my earlier pass due to a thick stand of trees
which attenuated the AO-92 signal.
You didn't mention your equipment. The typical Elk/Arrow has a wide
beamwidth, which is normally ideal, but makes it hard to reject a second
signal in the same general area. If you have an antenna with a narrower
beamwidth, you can sometimes reduce the interfering signal while still
getting a usable signal for the target by careful pointing. FoxTelem with a
FCD does a great job, but as you know it can be "spoofed" by a much stronger
but similar signal. You can manually "steer" it a bit.
I have a system where the dongle feeds SDR#, and then audio to FoxTelem.
This does allow you to narrow the RX passband, and tune precisely to the
desired signal. You can ignore CAS-4B so long as it is near but not
overlapping AO-92, which sometimes happens due to Doppler. You do need to
keep AO-92 carefully centered, either manually or with computer control.
This general approach is discussed in the FoxTelem manual.

What Alan said for sure. The previous pass they crossed paths very near to
TCA. 91 was a bit stronger, but there was QRM. If it makes you feel better,
no one got any images or pieces even on that last pass.

We urgently need someone with a D700 or D710 to drive to the top of Apple
Orchard (AO) Mountain near Roanoke and Lynchburg and Comers Rock near
Wythville along I 81. See details:

Its for 4 hours from 11 to 1500 on Saturday to be a digipeater for the
annual AT Golden Packet Event.
All the other 15 stations from Georgia to Canada along the Appalachian
Trail are ready to go. Some operators are driving several hours to man
those sites. We need to find two operators in SW VA to complete the chain.
We do both 1200 and 9600 baud operation and so a D710 or D700 is required
(or D72 with amplifier.
