I posted this to the 9100 group, and also here, in case anyone might be
interested in this. What SDR S/W is anyone using with their SDRPlay for
sat?s? I?m trying to learn SDR-Console and the learning curve is very steep.
I vaguely remember a few years ago getting it working with some other S/W....

I finished my PAT V install on my 9100 this morning. I decided to do the HF
tap also, but not the 23cm. It?s went well, worse part was doing the HF tap,
I managed to move the top board out of the way without completely un
plugging, then removing the metal shield completely to get to the HF tap
point on the BPF board. Everything is working ok, only issue?s are I
haven?t figured out yet how to get the levels up to allow a better waterfall
display. I?m using SDR-Console. I also have to figure out how to get the
display to follow the 9100. Just started using SDR-Console and the learning
curve is very steep. What I don?t understand is there is no frequency
offset needed to use the various taps, and also the bandwidth on HF is very
narrow? Any ideas? Also If anyone want's some pictures of my install I will
gladly send them along.

A big thanks to Dave KD2C for making this available...

Hello Dave,

With respect, your understanding of the problem is quite incorrect.

You should definitely "set" the noise figure of your receive system as
early as possible with a LNA. Any decent LNA will have a noise figure
far lower than your receiver, not to mention to the coax attenuation
adding _directly_ to the NF of your system.

I used the data here:

http://www.df9ic.de/tech/trxtest/trxtest.html

Let's pick the IC910H, with a 3.7dB NF. Now, add 100' of LMR400 for a
loss of 1.5dB at 2m. You end up with a NF of 5.2dB.

Next, let's try a LNA before that coax with a measly 1dB NF and 15dB of
gain: NF of 1.325dB at the receiver.

https://www.pasternack.com/t-calculator-noise-figure.aspx

This can easily be seen with the Friis noise equation. Here's a good
explanation with the (simple) math:

https://www.microwaves101.com/encyclopedias/noise-figure

I'd invest in a good LNA at the antenna and a PA in the shack before I'd
ever think about upgrading my coax.

I recently picked up a Emotator EV700X elevation rotor.. Everything works
fine, the rotor rotates on command via the control box,.. All lights work .
There is one major problem,, The indicator needle does not move although the
rotator works. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could
be ?? I don't believe this EMotator is being produced any longer. The
rotatpr itself is built like a tank and works great. The shaft for the
needle indicator is not turning at all .. Thanks for any help... JACK KC7MG

 Hi Dave,
You said everything I have learned and observed up until now, but please
allow me to add one complication to it -

FM discriminators (aka de-modulators) cannot handle very low signals well,
for example, the downlinks of older lower power birds.? I observe this when
I switch between a vertical and a Yagi, the extra signal strength from even
a short 3 element Yagi keeps the FM discriminator very happy.?

I find this issue less noticeable in SSB modes and adding a preamp is almost
as good as turning up the volume control at the radio.?

you really don't improve signal to noise unless the noise figure of the
pre-amp is better than your receiver. Usually your just amplifying the
signal to make up for the loss that's going to happen as the signal makes
it's way down the coax.

You also add complexity when you want to TX on the antenna since you will
need to add a t/r relay at the antenna. In addition, you are still losing
tx power with the higher loss cable so depending on your ERP goal you may
need an amplifier, generally not an issue with the LEO's.
LMR-600 or hardline is my feedline of choice for 2m and up. I'm not
suggesting that pre-amps can't or shouldn't be used but usually aren't
needed if good low loss feedline is used to begin with.

Hi Jeff, pictures please!! My board is in route. May be a while until I
can install but hope for successes, too.

I plan to use either and Airspy or Airpsy mini and SDR# then use the
SatPC32 plugin so it tracks on frequency with the 9100. Think that?ll work
as I imagine it.

Alan WA4SCA pointed out the board to me. Initially I struggled with how
this is different since it?s an RF tap and not the more common IF tap
approach.

What bandwidth do you see in HF? I forget what the RF tap frequency is.
Maybe that?s a clue. But I figured it would be wide-ish.

I see your point about maybe not tapping 1.2 GHz; no local repeaters here
so used for sat uplinks only.

Hi Jeff!

I use HDSDR and it works very well for me. I was only in receive mode for
a long time learning how to decode various types of satellite telemetry but
now I also get on the amateur sats with voice transponders. HDSDR does
everything that I need to do with an SDR both for telemetry reception as
well as being the downlink "radio" for transponder use. I would imagine
the other applications do most if not all of the same things. But, in my
case, I just learned how to navigate in HDSDR and preferred it after trying
the others.

The society of Broadcast Engineers http://www.sbe.org has been conducting
electronic voting for it's officers and board members for several years now.
Please contact John Poray, SBE executive Director or James Leifer, elected

ARRLtried electronic balloting for Directors and Vice Directors for a
three-year cycle not long ago. Physical ballots were mailed only to those
members without email addresses on file. Members with emails on file got a
link to the contractor's (SBS) online voting site.
Voter participation in the few contested ARRL elections during that cycle
plummeted, and the cost was pretty much a wash (it costs money to do
electronic voting securely). The difficulty is that an email directing
voters to a voting site is easily lost in the noise compared to a paper
ballot received in the mail. This phenomenon is not uncommon; the same thing
happened when the Virginia State Bar implemented online voting around the
same time, with the same vendor.
ARRL abandoned electronic balloting. VSB has kept it, and has dealt with
declined participation. There are merits in both approaches, but the
argument that electronic balloting is better and cheaper is fallacious.
(Same thing applies to electronic publication as compared to paper--paper ad
rates command a premium for a very good reason.)

Cleaning out shack and found a Kansas City Tracker/Tuner board and 3.5"
floppy with software. Board stencil reads "LLG02 Rev D" and has "6912" (a
serial number?) handwritten on the solder side. Parallel port interface
and fits in one of the old full height PC slots (16 bit?). No idea if it
works. No floppy drives so I can't check if the disk is readable. I
think I bought this used in early-mid 1990s. In excellent cosmetic
condition (kept in a static bag in a box in climate-controlled shack for
the past 2 decades+!). Photos of board on request.

Will ship to anyone who'll pay the postage. (USPS domestic Priority Mail
small flat rate box is $7.20). Please contact direct ks1g@?????.???.

There are a few quirks with the site. However, I have found a work
around that will satisfy everyone.

You have the option of one King Bed or two Double Beds. You can choose
how many adults and children. Just not off the first linked page.

Please follow these tips to make it work right for your needs. I also
added these instructions on the amsat.org Symposium page.

73...bruce

Instructions for booking your room. Firefox blocked several of the
features on this page. Try Internet Explorer or Edge, they worked fine.
First, click on the link or copy/paste. You will be presented with one
option... a King Bed with one person. Next, choose the dates for your
stay. After that, click on Check Availability. This will allow you to
choose either one King bed or two Double beds. After choosing the beds,
click on Edit that appears under your check in and out dates and below
the number of rooms and guests. You can change the number of adults and
children in the room and make any other changes you need.

AMSAT Will be represented at a large space themed STEM event at the
Frontiers of flight museum in Dallas this coming Saturday. "Moon Day" will
feature astronomy and space themed exhibits from many organizations from our
area here in North Texas. Special speaker will be NASA Astronaut Douglas
Wheelock, KF5BOC most recently on ISS Expedition 24.
https://www.flightmuseum.com/moon-day/

Keith Pugh, W5IU, Mac Cody, AE5PH, Jay Cox, KG5BZW and myself, N5HYP will
anchor the AMSAT presence at the event from 10-4P CDT

We will have an opportunity to talk about amateur radio and especially
amateur satellites to upwards of 1500 families and young people from all
over. Most all of them will be non-hams. We will be doing contacts on all
the FM satellites between 10AM and 4PM CDT using a shared call sign, W5FC,
thanks to the Dallas Amateur Radio Club, our neighbors in the indoor exhibit
area. Thanks also to Joe Spier, AMSAT president for loaning the Fox
satellite mock up for display.

It WILL be hot with a projected Dallas record high of 110 degrees so we
won't be outside for long each pass but if you do hear W5FC from EM12 Moon
Day, give us a shout please. I am sure Patrick Stoddard has done hotter
passes, but this should be close.

73 and see you on the birds tomorrow.
