Due to a printing error, the beige-colored ballots mailed to AMSAT- NA
members
for the 2018 Board of Directors election on July 15, 2018 have been
declared
void. Any of these voided ballots received at the AMSAT-NA office will

New ballots labeled "CORRECTED BALLOT 7/20/2018" and printed on
yellow-colored
cardstock will be mailed to all AMSAT-NA members.

Please vote for no more than three of the 2018 candidates:

Tom Clark, K3IO

Scotland site selected as launch base for Lockheed Martin, Orbex

Two companies ? U.S. aerospace giant Lockheed Martin and British
start-up Orbex
? seeking to carve out a share of the burgeoning small satellite launch
market
plan to fly their rockets from a remote site on the northern shore of
Scotland,
British government and industry officials announced Monday.

The proposed launch facility would be built on A?Mhoine Peninsula, a
sparsely-
populated stretch of land overlooking the sea. The first launch from
Sutherland
could happen in the early 2020s.

British government officials said the development of a U.K. spaceport
would give
the nation?s industry broader access to the space market. British
companies,
such as SSTL in England and Clyde Space in Scotland, are already counted
among
the global leaders in constructing small satellites.

Scottish Secretary David Mundell said the Sutherland launch site could
create
hundreds of new jobs.

Lockheed Martin is reportedly interested in launching a variant of
Rocket Lab?s
Electron booster from the Sutherland site. The U.S. aerospace contractor
is a
strategic investor in Rocket Lab, which already operates an orbital
spaceport in
New Zealand, and is planning to develop a U.S. launch pad for the Electron
vehicle, which has made two test flights to date.

Rocket Lab said in a statement late Monday that it is ?evaluating launch
opportunities? from the Sutherland spaceport in Scotland.

?Electron is well-positioned to be the first orbital rocket launched
from U.K.
soil,? said Peter Beck, Rocket Lab?s founder and CEO. ?We?re excited to
review
the opportunity to develop a launch service to support the U.K. space
industry?s
growth.

?Every aspect of Rocket Lab?s launch model is designed to offer rapid,
repeatable and precise delivery to orbit for small satellites,? Beck
said in a
statement. ?The development of launch sites around the globe that can
support
Electron launches is crucial to delivering unprecedented access to orbit.?

I now have it working with HDSDR and SDR-Console. After attempting to work
some birds with this setup for a couple of days I've come to the conclusion
that the 3 to 4 db loss I'm seeing from splitting the RX data doesn't work
well enough with my setup here. Switching from the Flex to the Icom has the
same effect and more that turning my pre amps off would do. The loss makes
the pass unusable. Now I do have a marginal antenna system, The M2 leopak
that might be contributing to the problem. I'm packing up to return to NJ
for the rest of the summer. My antenna system up there has a somewhat
higher gain, a Cushcraft AOP-1, so maybe this will work better there. I will
be brining my Flex VU5K along also just in case I don't get this worked out
:-) I might be able to configure the software better, to get the gain up,
but that's not looking likely at this point.

I was planning on selling the VU5K and keeping the 9100, but now that
doesn't look like the Icom is anywhere near replacing the Flex....

Been researching all available software and can't find a way to get the
SDRPlay (or any SDR) to just simply track the 9100's d/l frequency. That
would be ideal. Anyone have any ideas on how this might be done?

>>> What SDR S/W is anyone using with their SDRPlay for sat?s?

Hi Jeff!

I use HDSDR and it works very well for me. I was only in receive mode for
a long time learning how to decode various types of satellite telemetry but
now I also get on the amateur sats with voice transponders. HDSDR does
everything that I need to do with an SDR both for telemetry reception as
well as being the downlink "radio" for transponder use. I would imagine
the other applications do most if not all of the same things. But, in my
case, I just learned how to navigate in HDSDR and preferred it after trying
the others.

Hi,

I have just got back from a two week holiday and while going through my mail
found a report that the data display had been stuck for a few days.

It turns out that one of the internal services had failed due to lack of
resource.

The good thing is that the raw data has been captured during the period and
I'm writing a small application to do a catch up.

The services are all working again now.

1) When I went to the reservation link, I found that I can ?pull-down? for
multiple rooms
but NOT for Guests/room. I suppose that I can book 1 room and just have
my better
   half show up.

2) I was out of town, but saw that there was some hub-bub about the election
ballot.
Didn?t see anything on the website about it, but noticed that the
instructions
in the left column conflict with the right column heading.

I?m going with the ?read carefully? side for my 3 BoD selections.

To All of You Who Heard Me this past weekend,

I will be logging all of my satellite contacts from Silver Lake Resort
(DM07) near June Lake, CA in the Eastern Sierra with my N6REK/P callsign
on LoTW, QRZ and eqsl.

FYI, I will be back there in DM07 from August 29 to Sept. 2nd working
the FM birds whenever I get the chance. More on that as the dates
approach. I might even be able to activate some new grids.

73,

Bob, N6REK
